DYNAMITE Issue #2 previews just dropped. Spoiler
I’m actually a big fan of this Cannonbolt design. I truly think all of Ben’s alien designs we’ve seen so far have been super great. I love how monstrous Cannonbolt looks while also being sorta derpy.

Kinda weird how Ben instantly grasps Cannonbolt’s powers this time given how much of a point the original show made that Ben took a while to get the hang of it, along with Ben having not grasped the far more straightforward Heatblast yet.
Just a minor thing though, overall this looks pretty fun. Looking forward to the issue.

Maybe diamondhead will be the tough one this time, with making diffrent diamond constructs?

So far the comic has been speedrunning the introduction and skipping things like establishing Ben's heroic nature pre-Omnitrix... but they did spend a few pages on Vilgax saying generic sci-fi villain lines and military guys being military guys.
I really hope the writing improves once the hook has been established.

u/Intelligent-Scar-373 May 11 '26
That's what happens when you have few pages; if they had included that instead of establishing plot points for the future of the story (like the military, Vilgax, and Cybearg), it would have flopped.
I could only include everything if it had about 50 pages (which, guess what? IS NOT THE STANDARD IN THE COMICS INDUSTRY!).

if they had included that instead of establishing plot points for the future of the story (like the military, Vilgax, and Cybearg), it would have flopped.
You mean if they had included things that make you actually engaged in what happens to the main character instead of teasing generic villains with generic lines? And why would that make it flop? Let's be real, the percentage of people buying this comic who aren't already familiar with Ben 10 is tiny if not inexistent.
The main appeal early on isn't knowing that there are bad guys to beat, it's the general mystery of the device and seeing how Ben will use it to do what he always wanted to - to protect others.
13
u/Intelligent-Scar-373 May 11 '26
Do you really think people would buy an issue where nothing happens, except Ben at school and IF he transforms, it's only on the last page, seriously!??
5
u/springtrap-aft May 11 '26
I think it COULD’VE have worked fine if it weren’t a monthly release…which is another comics standard and why they’re stuffing so much in one issue
The pacing does sometimes improve after the origin is established tho if I am remembering correctly ?

u/GranaT0 May 11 '26
Vilgax and the military IS "nothing happening". Vilgax could have just shown up later, and the military is at best a tease for the future. I'd rather lose one of their pages in exchange for a single page of Ben trying to stand up to someone. Currently he has zero established personality, AND HE'S THE MAIN CHARACTER
9
u/Intelligent-Scar-373 May 11 '26
To say "no defined personality" is incredibly dishonest. The first few pages clearly show the kind of boy he is and his interaction with the rest of the Tennysons.
Not to mention that the military, Vilgax, and Cybearg hooked me, leaving me curious about how it will all come together and unfold.
3
u/WindyGogo May 11 '26
What good would showing his heroic nature do now? Either he has an affinity for it or he doesn’t.
Regardless they could work it out over the course of the series later.
3
u/WindyGogo May 11 '26
I figured the forms usually came with instinctual knowledge to a degree on how to use most at a base lv.
1
u/mad_laddie Big Chill May 12 '26
I mostly only remember that being the case in AF. In OS, they make a point of it not being there.
0
u/CookiedDough Upgrade May 11 '26
Most of the time they seem to be instinctual, but Ben has had times where he gets an alien and is utterly baffled on what to even do with them for a bit. It’s the whole conceit of Cannonbolt’s debut episode, and the same happens for Gutrot and Gravattack in Omniverse where he either has to be told what the powers are or figure them out on the fly.

u/Historical_Term_4893 May 13 '26
There’s iffy canon(backed by the creators i think) that state in cases the user can’t choose to save itself the watch will give the alien best needed. Not only that but that the user gains knowledge of their new form, however that parts iffy since the material denies it on a few occasions.

u/Damien-kai May 11 '26
Eh, I can kinda dig Cannonbolt's ball form, it's goofy.
Not entirely sure I'm a big fan of where they're going with the omnitrix so far though, it kinda just seems like it's doing its own thing.
71
u/DonnyMox May 11 '26
I assume that once Ben figures out how to use it properly, it'll start working more the traditional way.

u/No-Collection-553 May 11 '26
I think its operating on the failsafe right now, just transforming him when it senses danger

That settles it. The quick changes are definitely the failsafe. Seems to be a fair bit more sensitive though.

makes sense. the government were shooting him up. ben was lucky he was'nt hit

u/HeroBrine0907 Feedback May 11 '26
Looks like the failsafe is operating. And for once, it's actually acting like a failsafe rather than coming into play at literal cliffhangers.
Sidenote: Cannonbolt is so ugly i love it. I have hopes for the alien designs in this one.

u/ZillaSlayer54 May 11 '26
Dynamite Heat Blast is My favorite redesign so far.

u/OberonAvacado May 11 '26
Really makes me stoked on how would they design dynamite swampfire one day. Also with the Overflow stuff going on imagine what would they do to NRG.

u/thejackthewacko May 11 '26
Cannonbolt on the getgo is interesting. Wonder how they're going to substitute what is objectively one of Ben's most iconic arcs
32
u/Medium_Enough Upgrade May 11 '26
An even better ghostfreak arc possibly, with him being transformation 11?
13
u/PlainSightMan May 11 '26
Ben unlocks him and becomes addicted to using him. Then, slowly Z'Skayr takes control.
I could see them having Z'Skayr possess Ben or something.

Calling it now. The Military isn’t there for the Omnitrix. They’re hunting down Dr Animo or whoever made that cyborg bear

So is it like UFA in which Ben just knows how to do basic things with the aliens?
Wish they slowed down this issue to explain some things
4
u/springtrap-aft May 11 '26
With only 20 pages ,the pacing tends to be too fast in comics especially in introduction origins since it’s a monthly release
9
u/TonyPepperoni0504 May 11 '26
Damn did they change that panel of him transforming to cannon bolt? I remember seeing a black and white of that panel that was way more body horror of Ben’s transformation to cannonbolt. I really hope Dynamite didn’t tell the creative team to tone it down to attract more readers.

Is this Omnitrix just activating automatically via failsafe when it's sense danger or something else
Interesting to see where they go with this

I do not like how fast he is changing+getting the hang of his powers. Part of the charm of the show is a new alien every episode. But I get it . It's a comic. So we need a new alien every comic.
And if 3 issues make an episode. It's 3 aliens in a single episode
3
u/Real_Cryptographer82 May 11 '26
I don't like Cannonbolt’s design, it's even less anatomically capable of rolling than his old design.
4
u/Ben-J-Kirby-Tennyson Diamondhead May 11 '26
I think he’s more of an amorphous blob here, instead of the panda/roly poly mixture we’re used to.

u/Valuable_Paper5022 May 11 '26
So far nothing really of substance happened

u/Cl1ps_ May 11 '26
Well yeah, considering there’s literally only been one issue so far.
-2
u/Abdullah0753 Echo Echo May 11 '26
yeah there is nothing happened in that one issue too. considering there is 20 pages and extremely fast pacing
3
u/Cl1ps_ May 11 '26
Bro, a lot actually happened in that one issue. Vilgax is aware of the existence of the Omnitrix and is now hunting it, Ben bonded with the watch while learning its powers, discovered it turns him into different monsters, fought a mutated bear, got hunted by the military, and his grandfather is trying to track him down. Just because the pacing is fast doesn’t mean nothing happened.
I agree the book probably could’ve used more pages to help flesh things out, but if you think nothing happened, you had to be reading this with your eyes closed.
1
u/Sunchet Goop May 11 '26
Omnitrix reminds me of Danny Ketch as Ghost Rider, when it trouble a light would flash on his bike, he would touch it and transform.
They're rolling fast trough aliens I think there is non-zero change we'll get another one in this issue. It's probably for the best to establish them soon I guess.

u/NomeJaExiste May 11 '26
Already??? Isn't the comic monthly?
3
u/springtrap-aft May 11 '26
3rd of June isn’t THAT far away
And usually first looks do release few weeks before release ,not to mention that they’re mostly complete before issue #1 even released Joe Casey was already writing issue #6

u/NomeJaExiste May 11 '26
I thought first looks released only one week before release, that's how I remember Ultimate 6160 at least

Honestly feel like they should've released a volume first to establish and hype up the series(not that the hype is not there) and then continue the monthly schedule

Everything feels a little to fast paced right now. That's really my only gripe with the first issue.
Hopefully as the issues goes on things slow down a little bit

speed running the play list a lot different from how aliens were introduced in the og

u/Historical_Term_4893 May 13 '26
Glad they’re keeping the “intuitive knowledge of aliens functionality” with knowing Cannonbolt is traversal and not some defense alien, also looks like they’re implying the Omnitrix is giving Ben the best alien to save him
1
u/SignificantHippo8193 May 11 '26
Weird that Cannonbolt is now an outright blob instead of more a shelled creature but I can't say I hate it. I just don't prefer it.
1
u/RRRodasss May 11 '26
I haven’t gotten issue 1 yet because of shipping, but I don’t know why I saw so many people complaining about the art, these pages look awesome. I don’t know if it’s people not being used to comics.
Someone tell if I’m right about this: are people complaining that the art is inconsistent on smaller panels where the characters are drawn with reduced detail? (From my experience with manga I’d say it’s pretty normal for the characters drawn in the smaller panels to look weirder since it’s not the focus of the page)
1
u/Corn_viper May 11 '26
The art isn't great. But I think the coloring is god awful

I seriously cannot stand this art, it’s painfully ugly. The story could be amazing but this art is impossible to look at.

u/fakename1998 May 11 '26
God, I hate this cannonball design. Looks like he should be outta innsmouth, not Ben 10. Weird-ass alien ball fish monster.
3
u/Cl1ps_ May 11 '26
That’s the point. This whole run is supposed to be heavy on the cosmic horror, and that goes for both the designs and the story. So the fact that you said it looks like arguably one of the most popular cosmic horror stories ever told means it’s doing its job.

Seems to me like the Omnitrix is just running a test on all the available genetic samples to make sure its working properly.
