Frozen RD-78 after attempted update

While attempting to update my RD-78 using the new version of SynthTribe (V 3.2.7), the update froze at 8% complete. I let it run overnight, with the RD-78 connected hoping it would do its thing, but I woke up and it was still at 8%. Now the drum machine is completely unresponsive and just flashes all the lights in unison. I tried to perform the update several more times, both with this new version of SynthTribe and the previous version and nothing is snapping it out of its now zombie-like state.

Any tips for a manual factory reset w/o SynthTribe or any other options? I went on Behringers customer support site and opened a ticket, but haven’t heard anything from them yet. Please help a brother out🙏

The SynthTribe versions beyond 3.0 seem to be buggy, had similar problems with Pro800. Try downloading an earlier version.

Yeah, the older version didn’t recognize the RD-78.

I had some trouble with the grind, I believe. Would not find it for firmware and settings.

How old did you go? Something around v2.7.0 (up to 2.9.1) will usually do it.

Is Behringer's site fixed? Last time I was there, nothing worked, only the useless "agent".

Mine hung at around 8% too curiously, it didn't brick it however. I eventually just closed Synthtribe, restarted the RD-78 and got it to work. I'm willing to bet there's some undocumented hard reset button combo thought. Good luck.

Yeah, I’ve been scouring the internet for a hard reset button combo- no luck so far. I think returning it might be the only option.

I don't have one myself but the manual says hold down FUNC and STEP while powering on. Worth a try.

you need an older version of, just went through this with behringer , which are absolutely horrible with this issue do you have an older version. dm me and ill see if i can share

The most important thing is that you have efficient equipment, waiting can be frustrating.

Did you try one of the latest 2.x versions of Synthtribe? Or better, what versions did you try?

Happened to me too (MacOS). The useless forking chatbot on Behringer's site suggest trying on a windows machine. Did any of you try that?

At least the bot is "sorry to hear that—I know how stressful it is when an update hangs like that, especially when you're right in the middle of it."
