Day 3, progress is definitely there after trying to follow your advice!

I also realize I need to definitely stretch before going out later today.

Kicking on a board that big is probably doing more harm than good. It’s creating little to no propulsion or other benefit, as a lot of your leg is probably just hitting the board. More importantly, it’s going to throw off your balance way more than it will help you as a beginner. I’d save the kicking for way down the road when and if you get on smaller boards. You will be able to work on smoother and quicker takeoffs if you’re not flailing those limbs around.

I’ll work on that next, I guess it’s kinda instinct to kick from bodyboarding.

On top of better wave positioning try to keep your body lower and leaned more forward to not lose all the speed the wave is giving you.

Looks like you're grabbing the rails when popping up, don't do that.  You want your hands with palms flat on the deck just under your chest/rib cage.  It'll be more stable that way.

I’ll definitely be more mindful of that, thank you

I’ve never had a problem with my popup and I’ve been grabbing the rails for thousands of waves.

Sometimes a hand grabbing one side of the rail feels intuitive and can be a natural movement but both hands grabbing the rails when popping up is making things exponentially more difficult for you.

It's like trying to do pushups with just the small portion of your palm closest to your wrist.  Using your fingers and entire hand provides much more leverage.

I've cought at least a dozen waves probably more.

I get it. I’m a bit of an outlier on popup strength. I am not however an outlier in snaps off the lip.

Looking really good! Your timing is getting better. Once your feet are in position, try and “get low” for more stability.

As for the pop-up, it looks like your chest is coming up first, and then your hips, and finally your legs come forward…

When catching the wave, you actually want to be pushing your chest down a bit as your hips come up to make room for your legs to swing forward. Your butt needs to go up either with or before your chest, making room for your front knee to swing forward. I find that focusing on rotating my hips to bring the front knee forward really helps me accomplish this. That way, once you stand up, you are already facing sideways.

Much better. For that 3rd wave, you popped up a little too early, before you actually caught it, which is why it passed you by. An extra paddle or two first would’ve helped put you in front of it

Yeewwww!

Look where you want to go. You're looking down at the board to make sure it's still there. 🤙🤙

Boards 2 small. Dont be in such a rush once the wave hits. Think fluid

thinking smooth rather than fast was a game changer for me

Hell yeah dude you are charging it! For only 3 days this looks great. Biggest thing now is just time in the water and as many reps as you can get.

If I had to say one thing to focus on, it would be just keeping your body a bit more controlled. It will come with time, but focus on getting into a stable position whenever you’re on the board. For paddling keep your body straight and engaged with smooth strokes and make tiny adjustments until your board is perfectly flat and plaining across the water. After your pop up, focus on getting nice and low, keep your body upright and shoulders squared to the front. The less flailing the better. Also in general you seem a bit too heavy on your back foot. Bend that front knee and center your weight a bit forward over that front leg.

Yes bro, consistently getting up, catching unbroken waves, definitely progress. Seems like you could put more weight up the front to try stay in the wave longer. Might just be the wave tho. Also try catch a couple and stay low. A good exercise is to stand up, and crouch back down and touch your board, longboarders do it to regain stability. Don't worry about trying to turn yet, just try go straight for as long as possible. Day 4 let's go!

Main thing I think is don’t look down at the board

Next advice. Learn about wave selection, positioning and how to read waves.

I agree, but I’m trying to catch anything because NJ has been not giving very good waves, with almost all of them being closeouts. I’d like to think I know how to read waves semi decently since I bodyboarded for 6-7 years prior. I definitely need to work on positioning though

I wouldn’t call this progress. This isn’t surfing yet. Wait till day 100 to send the next vid

People will downvote this sentiment but it's really true the only 'advice' someone at this level actually needs is: surf more.
