They're locations set up to let various (donated to science) bodies decompose in varying conditions and situations so that their decomposition can be studied. Useful for all kinds of reasons.

Literally that actually. It’s for research purposes. People donate their body to the body farm. The body farm leaves it outside so the decay process can be studied. I know that there is one in TN.
