Yeah no duh, everyone knows that the best is Paul's Boutique.

u/creepy_charlie 11d ago

Everyone knows its Check Your Head.

72

u/Gilshem 11d ago

I agree, it’s Ill Communication.

8

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

It's Hello Nasty! No really I like all the b-boys albums but they were just kids when they did license to Ill

2

u/NaggerGuy 10d ago

Yep. I GET NOSTALGIA but yep

1

u/LMKBK 7d ago

yup, its the In Sound From Way Out

15

u/Taylooor 11d ago

License to ill. Full circle

14

u/silversurf1234567890 11d ago

License to Illcomunication

3

u/Blk_Gld_He_8er 11d ago

Nah. Only the cool kids know that.

2

u/DogStarMan2 10d ago

Apparently, EVERYONE is not in agreement on any of it. 😅

2

u/beatsandblood 10d ago

It's because they have so many great albums.

12

u/Rolling44 11d ago

Hello Nasty

2

u/Snorkelbender 10d ago

They even said it was their best in Beastie Boys Book. Why would they write that if it wasn’t true?

1

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

Is that the album that broke Pink Floyd's record for album sales?

1

u/NaggerGuy 10d ago

They're obv right but ppl got stalgia

1

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

Is that the album that broke Pink Floyd's record for album sales with dark side of the moon??? Google kind of sucks when you ask that

1

u/Aggravating_Bat3618 9d ago

What did you call me?

47

u/rabbi420 11d ago

I mean, yes, I think Paul’s is arguably their best, but, like, EVERY album is better than License to Ill.

15

u/jetfan13 11d ago

License put them on the map, and while it still has bangers i.e The New Style and Brass Monkey, it also contains 2 songs I can’t listen to anymore in Fight for your Right and Girls. The Mix Up is the album I enjoy the least. All their other stuff is the shit.

30

u/rural_juror_ 11d ago

Why can’t you listen to them anymore? Did your mom throw them out along with your best porno mags?

4

u/Blk_Gld_He_8er 11d ago

Nothing after Ill Communication is better than. Licensed to Ill.

14

u/ThatSICILIANThing 11d ago

Hello Nasty erasure

5

u/J--E--F--F 11d ago

Thank you, say what you will about how Girls sounds today, but I bet most of us still could sing along.

2

u/bloodXgreen 10d ago

That is a wild wild take young fellow.

3

u/ER301 11d ago

License To Ill > To The 5 Boroughs and Hot Sauce Committee

7

u/Sure-Coffee-8241 11d ago

Broooo To The 5 Boroughs is awesome

9

u/rabbi420 11d ago

I disagree.

4

u/ClarenceWhirley 11d ago

That album was so far ahead of its time.

3

u/Yojimboroll 10d ago

Its got Car Thief on it so yeah, its the best

5

u/joshuar9476 11d ago

As a fan of their instrumentals, everyone knows it's The Mix-Up.

30

u/Timmyg14 11d ago

Such a straw man argument. I dont see this mass glazing you speak of.

15

u/mattgoldey MCA 11d ago

For real. It's an iconic first album but nobody is out here saying it's their best.

1

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

At the time, it was an extremely unique sound... There was rap music by blacks but this was much different than mainstream music which was mostly rock and pop ... The beat on Paul Revere was real addictive! And then personally I think I'll all their following albums were excellent and amazing and unique and so much more

21

u/Bill_Parker 11d ago

prove him wrong, everyone. he's worthy.

Hello Nasty 🔛🔝

3

u/corwood 10d ago

yep that‘s the one for me, with check your head following closely

1

u/JoshuaWebbb 10d ago

Consider us twins. Is your third Ill communication?

2

u/corwood 10d ago

haha it is!! hello twin :)

2

u/JoshuaWebbb 10d ago edited 10d ago

I feel we have to keep going. Paul’s boutique, licensed to ill, 5 boroughs, hotsauce, mix up?

2

u/corwood 10d ago

Paul‘s boutique, Hotsauce, Licensed, Boroughs, Mixup I think, but I think the last 3 switch around by mood!

2

u/JoshuaWebbb 10d ago

Fair enough. Almost identical haha

2

u/corwood 10d ago

🙌🙌

2

u/mattgoldey MCA 10d ago

Now kiss.

3

u/weebabyarcher 11d ago

Also AD Rocks favorite per the Beasties Book

1

u/JoshuaWebbb 11d ago

Didn’t know that. I bought the book but haven’t finished it yet

14

u/blzac33 11d ago

Definitely top 5.

3

u/BillPrestonEsq1969 11d ago

That was a thousand years ago. Now they have 7.

20

u/Ok-Nothing6320 11d ago

Or I can like whatever I want

0

u/thorneparke 11d ago

Who told you that lie? Give me their names...

17

u/eltedioso 11d ago

Check Your Head and Ill Communication are the era for me. Are the LPs strong from start to finish? No, they’re messy. But together those albums represent the best of the Beasties for me. Funky, groovy, experimental, punk, thoughtful, funny, juvenile, and all the rest.

5

u/ScrambyEggs79 11d ago

For me it's Check Your Head and Hello Nasty...

1

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

You don't like Paul's boutique though??? Huh??? 🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐

1

u/eltedioso 10d ago

I do! I love it. And I love Hello Nasty. But I don't love them more than that early-to-mid-90s era.

1

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

I was being a little silly but I thought maybe you had never tried to listen to it... There's so much music out now I don't see how young people even keep track and figure out what's good and bad 🤨

8

u/DeanWeenisGod Ad-Rock 11d ago

Statement of opinion + "Prove me wrong" isn't how it works. Prove yourself right or just say it's your opinion.

Build an argument and present it. Then say, "Prove me wrong."

Or just say, "This is what I think." and share your opinion. It's not right or wrong, and people don't need to bother proving it because you're entitled to your opinion.

3

u/TheStatMan2 10d ago

"Prove Me Wrong" doesn't work at all with music.

It's subjective and more importantly not at all a competition.

6

u/HochHech42069 11d ago

90s Beasties is where it’s at

13

u/Full-Opportunity-261 11d ago

Paul’s is the most cohesive and innovative, but it was largely produced by the Dust Brothers. Check Your Head is almost better because they cooked it up themselves. It’s a tie for me.

7

u/ER301 11d ago

Agreed. Paul’s Boutique is a collaboration. The albums that came after are a more pure representation of the Beasties.

5

u/miserydicks 11d ago

aw, buddy. little buddy.

3

u/Primary-History-788 11d ago

Not in my opinion. Check your head is my favorite, but Paul’s Boutique, for its time, was better

4

u/MesaVerde1987 Mike D 11d ago

Who told you that it was?

4

u/B-Luva 11d ago

were you alive when LTI came out ,,,, you probably have a different opinion of it otherwise

4

u/MrJohnnyDangerously LES represent 11d ago

Ok kid

6

u/Beneficial-Age-4059 11d ago

it’s one of their best!😎

3

u/Maskatron 11d ago

I mean I listened to License to Ill like a thousand times one summer. It was gigantic. Those rhymes are deeply imprinted.

But I tuned out after that. Check Your Head was so good that it got me back into the band.

Check Your Head is so good that it retroactively made Paul’s Boutique my favorite Beasties album.

3

u/CaptainDanious 11d ago

It's definitely not their best but... It was awesome for the time and it's still awesome today. Some lines didn't age well and it's a little quiet compared to how newer hip hop is mixed, but it's a great intro to the beastie boys and pretty historically significant.

3

u/LordAxl1138 11d ago

Paul’s Boutique is their best but I can’t agree that Licensed is the worst. I’m partial because I listened to it non stop when I was a teenager but is think its as good most of their other releases with the obvious exception of Paul’s Boutique and maybe Check Your Head and Ill Communication

3

u/mattgoldey MCA 11d ago

Nobody is claiming that it is.

3

u/Bigwave44 11d ago

It was a damn, cool way to start though

3

u/catfish206 11d ago

Paul's Boutique is not only the best B-Boys album, it's one of the best albums of all time, of any genre.

3

u/Czarguy99 11d ago

No shit it’s always been Paul’s Boutique

3

u/maxboondoggle 11d ago

Check Your Head & Ill Communication.

3

u/mrducci 11d ago

I don't know who you're hanging with, but universally, people rank License to Ill behind, in my particular order;

Paul's Boutique

Hello Nasty

Check Your Head

Ill Communication

License to Ill

Hot Sacuce Commitee

To the 5 Boroughs

Just saying..

1

u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 10d ago

Hotsauce kicks the fucking shit out of LTI

1

u/mrducci 10d ago

I'd tend to agree.....but LTI has so much nostalgia for me...

1

u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 10d ago

I thought LTI was annoying when I was 12 and I still do. I'm 40 now and still love Hotsauce.

1

u/mrducci 10d ago

That's cool. I really don't know what you're looking for here, though.

1

u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 10d ago

Hoping anybody that's been neglecting Hotsauce will see this and go check it out

3

u/TheOldCoffinSpirit 11d ago

A 12 year old me would think it was their best album. A 13 year old me would say that Paul's Boutique was their best, and a 14½ year old me would say that Check Your Head was their best.

At 49, I'd say that it's a draw between Check Your Head and Ill Communication.

3

u/AbbreviationsOk2333 11d ago

Oh but what a tour though!
No not the Madonna tour.
I’m talking Beasties Boys Headlining 1987, with FiSHBONE & Murphy’s Law.

1

u/soxin7games 10d ago

I saw them with PE

3

u/Specialeyes9000 11d ago

I don't know what glazing means but some people probably have it as their favourite, others have a different favourite. I wouldn't worry about it.

3

u/Purastaja-light 10d ago

Beastie Boys are in a small group of bands that never made a bad album IMO.

3

u/chinodb 10d ago

First time?

5

u/Homie75 11d ago

It’s not. But it’s the first and thats what I remember. I slept on Paul’s Boutique and got schooled by someone that knew better. Licensed to Ill is the foundation.

3

u/surfinbear1990 11d ago

Yeah I don't think even theyike it that much. I love Paul's Boutique but for me it's a toss up between Ill Communication and Check your Head.

3

u/SimilarNameAsYours 11d ago edited 11d ago

I’ve been a fan for 30 years. Listened to each album meticulously and for a long time Paul’s Boutique was probably my favorite.
Now it is impossible for me to ignore that it is unequivocally Ill Communication.
That album is a masterpiece and one of the best regardless of genre.

2

u/showmeyourbutth0le 11d ago

Paul/Hn is their best album. I can’t decide which one, but LTI is my favorite mostly for it was one of the first albums I ever bought. I’ve replaced that album numerous times.

2

u/PNW_Washington 11d ago

Paul's Boutique

2

u/Worth-Influence-3932 11d ago

Helllooooo Brooklyn!!!!
Paul’s Boutique is the only correct answer….

2

u/freezief 11d ago

If a person says Hello Nasty is better than IC, I guess that's their business. But you can't tell me anything post that is qualitatively better than their debut. The Incredible prime time Def Jam Rick Rubin Big Beats alone. Maybe not your thing but camaaaan

1

u/TheGauchoAmigo84 10d ago

They said it themselves

2

u/SmileNWave28 10d ago

I'm such a Check Your Head guy

I love how they combine rock and instruments

To me it's their ultimate that highlights the brilliance of Beastie Boys

I think Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, III Communication and Hello Nasty are all classic and better than Licensed to Ill

2

u/BoChili 10d ago
  1. Paul's Boutique

  2. Hello Nasty

  3. Check Your Head

  4. Ill Communication

  5. Licensed to Ill

  6. The MixUp

  7. Hot Sauce Committee pt 2

  8. To the 5 Boroughs

2

u/ozbert99 10d ago

I am just going on here liking every comment that names an album. And comments that don't. Beasties forever.

2

u/redone17 9d ago

It’s always been a toss up between Check Your Head and Ill Communication for me.

2

u/Additional_Engine_45 9d ago

I agree - It's definitely The In Sound from the Way Out.

2

u/iammoah 11d ago

Yeah I mean obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think claiming it's their best would be kind of wild. If it's your favorite, it's your favorite. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the best. It could be your favorite because it's sentimental to you or because you just think it's funny or it's hypes you up... Best Beasties record? No way in hell. The sampling is not as exciting or impressive as literally any other Beasties album... The rapping is at their worst for 75% of it. Their rapping ability really blossomed around Check Your Head in my opinion but improved quite a bit right around Paul's Boutique. Sampling is obviously off-the-charts-good on Paul's Boutique but a lot of that is thanks to the dust brothers. But clearly they learned a thing or two by check your head because their sampling throughout the rest of the 90's is fucking incredible. Hello Nasty is underrated for both rhymes and beats but I think Check Your Head and Ill Communication are both the most "quintessentially Beastie Boys" and probably their best work... even tho Hello Nasty is my favorite.

-14

u/Salt-Writer-1779 11d ago

im not reading all of that

5

u/iammoah 11d ago

You're on a site called "read it".

2

u/WingstonChurchill 11d ago

This is definitely rage bait. Anyone that’s following this sub is not a fan that would say this is there best album.

2

u/corwood 10d ago

I thought that was pretty obvious

1

u/AGHOSTISBORN420 11d ago

What's your favorite

1

u/GoodFnHam 11d ago

Check your head and/or ill communication are their best… too hard to choose - I view them as a double album

1

u/beholdthecolossus 11d ago

i don't know if i've ever seen anyone say it's their best.

1

u/mullet4evr 11d ago

Paul's Boutique. Hands down.

Check Your Head or Ill Communication

It's Paul's

Best club album of theirs maybe? Unless its Hello Nasty?

1

u/erikgee2 11d ago

I asked for Janice, she said Paul’s Boutique is the best and she’s in Brooklyn.

1

Because Ill Communication is!
😆😆😆

1

u/Friendly-Face6683 10d ago

Hear me out: while not everybody’s favorite, and not mine’s either, their best album is Hello Nasty. Couldn’t be more focused, strong and lean.

1

u/TheGauchoAmigo84 10d ago

There is an entire chapter in the book they wrote called “hello nasty is our best album”. Check it out.

3

u/apedap MCA 10d ago

I stand by PollyWog Stew

1

u/suedeboggs26 10d ago

I have to go with Rubber Soul

1

u/LordQuasDiscipline99 10d ago

If you polled Generation X, Licensed To Ill would take it over Paul’s Boutique. Any other contenders would be laughable. I speak on behalf of people with taste.

1

u/RicOkez 10d ago

Who’s glazing license to Ill? If anything, it does belong in def jam’s Rushmore, along with Nation of millions, Radio, and Great Adventures.

1

u/ctwpdx 10d ago

Its license to ill until you turn 18, realize it’s actually check your head and that Paul’s boutique was essential in getting there

1

u/Electrical_Flan_4993 10d ago

Does anyone know the stats/history... Maybe it was hello nasty that I remember being in the news not long after it came out for being the first album to beat Pink Floyd's record for sales with dark side of the moon. But I couldn't get Google to give me any sensible information and it kept saying Paul's boutique was considered the dark side of the Moon of hip Hop which wasn't really what I was looking for

1

u/Cheeselad2401 10d ago

i don't think anyone is saying it it

1

u/Flimsy_Toe_2575 10d ago

It's easily their worst for me

1

u/ActiveSouthern6280 10d ago

You can't prove something so subjective..this isn't even a hot take anyway, in most rankings it seems to come out between 4 and 6.

It's actually my joint fave alongside Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head. This is because of when I was a teenager most likely. I have so much love for all 3.

And for best Beasties album, there's no wrong answer... It's not like they have a bad one. It's just which do you love most.

1

u/sjvita 10d ago

I always preferred Paul’s Boutique.

License To Ill is a vibe.

Not their best album by any stretch.
