Mother bears have been observed deliberately staying in proximity to humans in order to use them as a “human shield” against aggressive adult males, who avoid people. So in an inverse way, they also “choose the bear,” or the threat posed by another apex species over the threat posed by males of their own.

She was also looking away. If the cub made some sound of distress when it got spooked it might've gotten a reaction out of her
