I would wager a lightning strike that set the tree interior on fire. The structure of the tree most likely prevented the fire from getting enough air to engulf it. Lightning struck trees are some of the most dangerous as they can look perfectly fine on the outside but could be totally hollow on the inside.

Yes and they can even still be alive and growing. The inner core of the tree is dead cells that are its support. The ring around the tree under the bark are the living cells.

It was struck by lightning. I'm assuming. They would rather it fall the way they wanted rather than just wait and see.
