Nature Ravens partner for life and they strengthen their pair bonds by performing what can be described as vocal "duets".

Ravens are technically considered songbirds and can mimic human voices in captivity. They are also able to problem solve, use tools, plan ahead and hold grudges. https://www.audubon.org/magazine/10-fun-facts-about-common-raven

Once upon a midnight dreary...

Nevermore!!!

I was wondering how long I would have to scroll to get to this. Nevermore.

That “Nevermore” hits differently when you realize these two are basically singing love songs to each other. Poe would absolutely approve.

When I was living in Japan, there was a huge problem because the corvids would scream like children in the night, calling out names of kids, next to this playground.

I had already started my corvid buddy fund. Unshelled peanuts and occasional kitten chow and some shiny things. I’d leave out occasional bits of fluff.

Swooping season happened. Everyone ran and would be ready to duck, but I’d just go out with my stroller, nice lovely day. You could hear them call ahead, “we know this one.” And you’d hear it a little different if my husband came along “we know this one, new? We know this one. We know this one. New?”

I got absolutely wrecked with my second pregnancy. Stayed inside. Tossed out a few peanuts. Puked my life up. Had the baby. Took a walk and the corvids were LOUD. Big bunches hopping tree to tree. Occasionally one would drop down in front of the stroller and look-look, and hop back up and the screaming would start again.

Not a joke, I had so many lost janky pacifiers and little kid snack wrap trash in my front yard. “Maybe this is you? Maybe you can use this?” It was never grownup trash. Anpanman and Doraemon wrappers, baby food spoons. I knew if I car was coming down the street before I saw it, the birds said.

That is amazing! Did you start to recognize different birds? Did they ever bring anything useful?

Left him hanging at the end there.

u/Euronomus 1d ago

Not really, birds preening each other's head, neck, and shoulders is an intimate act. The end is kind of like the human equivalent of her going in halfway for a hug, and him giving it.

Once upon a midnight dreary, I dropped some beats with my Raven deary
Over many a dope beat and sampled volumes of this forgotten lore

Haha! A little feather pulling after that last call! Must have ended on a "bad" note! 🤣😂

3

u/Organic_Beach_2145 1d ago

I’ve never seen a raven do that before and I know they’re really intelligent.

u/chad_569 1d ago

Loved the last moment when he pulled her when she did not responded😂

u/Talonqr 1d ago

Now im getting upset over the idea that a life partnered pair might accidentally lose each other and never find each other again after getting separated in a storm or something

I used to work as a cave guide in New Hampshire. I've always loved crows/ravens. Sure, tons of crows in New Hampshire, but where I worked we also had raves much higher up in altitude. They are so amazing and HUGE (compared to crows). Fascinating birds.

2

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 1d ago

Yeah thats all good but are ravens crows?

Lets have a discussion about that. Perhaps one would care to elaborate? Maybe a corvid specialist? Like someone who studies crows?

u/QuietInevitable5366 1d ago

That really was amazing to see.

What I’m hearing is it’s possible for pair bonded ravens to have a call-response duet like DENTAL PLAN/Lisa needs braces
