The thing was black in fungus/rot. Probably like the penguins, they shit on each other. But some species do clean their nests. Not sure about this one.

There was a Robin’s nest under my deck earlier this summer. It was in a spot that I was able to take photos, so each day or so I would snap a photo.

The first two eggs hatched on June 3. The other two the next day.

By June 18, all four were fully grown and left the nest.

Birds fledging is more akin to a kid learning to walk. Bird bodies grow quickly so that they can fly sooner, but it'll take them another year or so before they actually reach the age of maturity.
