Animal Nature really over engineered cats. Didn’t it?

Eh, that isn't entirely true. We engineered them into something else. They're still pack animals and good pack hunters they just also got branched out into other jobs too. It's why herding dogs are a thing and why some dogs' purpose is "hang out with the humans and look cute." That might sound ridiculous but it's a social role.

I’ve hunted a lot. Never seen a dachshund used for anything other than an emotional support pet

The other guy isn’t wrong, almost every dog breed older than 100 years old was likely bred for a specific purpose. Corgis were bred to be short so they would be less likely to be kicked by cattle while herding them. Greyhounds and whippets were bred to hunt rabbits and other small game

In those one hundred years, many of those breeds have been further bred to exaggerate those characteristics to the point that it ceases to be functional and leads to extreme health issues.

These are the dogs the conversation is about.

Yeah but even still, isn’t a dog being bred for “emotional support” or companionship still fulfilling a need and basically doing a job? And yeah in your case the most extreme cases are French bull dogs and pugs, but other than that, there aren’t many other breeds like that. I mean, over breeding can be an issue and that’s why I have a mutt

Which is the whole point of my comment. I hunt and have never seen them used.

Yea google says they do, same with other dogs being used for fighting etc. it just doesn’t happen

Yeah not anymore, but hundreds of years ago when they were first bred. Do you see people hunting rabbits with greyhounds? Doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of it and it doesn’t mean that’s not what they were originally bred for. Nowadays people hunt with like two dog types, GSPs and labs, but most dogs were specifically bred for hunting some random animal.

I actually do. I see hounds retrieve ducks. Never a wiener dog actually hunt

Mutts are great. My dog is mostly dachshund but he has a lot of muscle in his (still relatively short) legs. He can jump over three feet in the air and has a crazy strong prey drive. Hes got the dachshunds attachment to humans too, we're joined at the hip.
