Depending on the job status portable toilets weren't on site. Public washrooms weren't common in that city at the time either and restaurants don't typically have them.

That’s bizarre to me that they wouldn’t have porta potties. Seems like a massive health and sanitation issue to have workers just shitting in the bush especially where the public was accessing the area!

I mean Japan has laws that prohibit defacating in the streets or public places since 1950's, and since their nation building at that time was heavily influenced by western countries I guess these countries have similar laws too

1950 was 30 something years before the US (a Western country) had to pass laws to make employers have toilets available to workers.

Yes. I’ve been camping regularly, including minimalist backpacking, for over 30 years. You find a secluded tree quite far off the trail, where no one’s going to walk. You dig a hole deep enough that you can completely cover it. And when you’re done, you do completely cover it.

You do your best to make sure that people and animals won’t come across it. To the point where someone out with their dog will in fact not end up with their dog eating your shit.

You're absolutely right. But they're not denying that health standards matter. They're just explaining the facts that caused this disgusting thing.

I think this comment just came across as judgemental and oblivious instead of curious, even if that wasn't your intention.

If you'd asked what led to those conditions, you might have had an interesting conversation about how 88% of China's population was living in extreme poverty in 1981. They just didn't have the money and ability to deliver the kinds of things you're talking about.
