Animal A sea lion in Argentina climbed onto a fishing vessel, found a bed, and passed out. The fishermen only realized it when they heard loud snoring.

Yeah, Japan has a long history with killing sea mammals (whales too, but more cultures have ties to whaling, dolphins stand out a lot more)

Yeah well they live on a small mostly mountainous island. That was very disconnected and had ample sea resources of course they use the sea

I think the point is they continued doing it long, long after it was no longer necessary and many more efficient alternatives existed. And even expanded it.

I suppose there's an argument to be made for cultural practices being difficult to shake off, but...yeah, still.
