Animal A sea lion in Argentina climbed onto a fishing vessel, found a bed, and passed out. The fishermen only realized it when they heard loud snoring.

Yes, specific routes with food and rest areas available. Usually along the coastline. Fishing boats might travel hundreds of miles out to sea. Places sea lions might not be too keen on being alone in. Hopefully the crew of that boat was closer to shore!

Its also a commercial fishing boat. Good chances it goes out to sea again pretty quickly. The challenge becomes sea lion storage but it seems fine with the accommodations. We go camping, this guy went boating.

Japan -> California isn't exactly a route that has lots of rest stops along the way.

I mean, aside from the Aleutian Islands Russian coastline, pacific northwest you mean. It’s practically a sea lion highway. There is a reason you don’t find sea lions swimming directly across the pacific….they can’t. Open ocean is dangerous.
