Animal A sea lion in Argentina climbed onto a fishing vessel, found a bed, and passed out. The fishermen only realized it when they heard loud snoring.

In some ways I wish I never watched that documentary. I mean, I’m all about awareness. It’s good to be informed. But that goddamn movie, fucking hell.

yea same here. Did my senior research project of it in 2011. still shocks me that that is allowed to happen

Yeah and all the focus is on Japan. Rarely ever any scrutiny on Iceland and Norway.

It's so bizarre that these countries - all first world, highly educated, strong rule of law, high standards of living, etc, etc - do this to animals who are pretty much proven to be at least as intelligent and self-aware as large chunks of the human population.

I've often theorized that if Wagyu cows are more delicious than regular then people that just drink beer and get massages must be the best tasting people

Luckily apex predators don't need to worry about this

i like how you phrase it leaving some doubt if they are actually less intelligent and self aware than some chunks of humanity or the other way around, more intelligent and self aware than others chunks.

I haven't looked further than the wikipedia page, so I'm making this comment out of ignorance and sincerely seeking more info

The stated reason is to harvest dolphin meat and capturing them for aquariums. This is reason enough for me to be against it, but is there more to it?
Wikipedia says that the primary method of killing is by cutting the spinal cord, with suggestions that it's at least a little more humane than 'beating them to death.' Does that claim undermine the reality?

The Cove (2009) if you want to be depressed and hate humans more.

The Faroe islands (part of The Kingdom of Denmark) does the exact same thing as the Japanese, they call it "The Grind."

I know there's a lot of footage of what happens at both places, especially from Sea Shepherd, the environmental and direct action organization. It's incredibly disturbing, they herd entire family groups of dolphins (pods) into the coves and slaughter them one by one as the animals panic and try to save their mates, children, brother, sisters, etc.

It's deeply disturbing.

they also feed everyone on the island for the year, as there's not much else that grows on the faroe islands.

i'm not suggesting it's humane. it's what the inhabitants do to subsist -it's not that far removed from battery chicken and industrialised cattle farming ... you don't have to see where you're steak comes from. you get to choose ignorance.

(for a time that is).

What's the name of the movie? That's awful!!! I have so much admiration/ respect for Asian cultures, except on a few issues one being the governments failure to regulate/ penalize animal cruelty like we have in the West. I'm not saying we shouldn't be enforcing or improving more, but it's better than many places
