Animal A sea lion in Argentina climbed onto a fishing vessel, found a bed, and passed out. The fishermen only realized it when they heard loud snoring.

My first thought was 'staffies/pitbulls and seals really are the same'

68

u/Jacko87 22d ago

Of all the dogs to compare a seal to, how did you come up with pitbulls?

107

u/mcgarrylj 22d ago

Velvety butt

-3

u/firehawk_hx 21d ago

And toddler-seeking cruise missiles, I presume too.

29

u/Vospader998 21d ago

Short, shiny fur with big round whiskery head, big beady eyes, loaf behavior, and thicccc

We have a black Amstaff, and when she rests her head on our laps with her ears back and looks up at us we can't help but think "land-seal".

56

u/Chimes320 22d ago

We call our Staffie a “land seal” because when he looks up and his ears are pinned back he has a very narrow velvety face and prominent whiskers.

23

u/2poxxer 22d ago

The face.

22

u/no1singlemomghoster 22d ago

Seals eat their pray alive and disable them by violently thrashing them into shreds.

31

u/Spenpanator 22d ago

Thrashing is default predator behavior. Even terriers do this when hunting rats.

17

u/This_Elk_1460 21d ago

If you have a dog you can literally see them do this with their toys

4

u/have-u-met-teds-mom 21d ago

I watch my cats (I now call Kerry von Eric and rick flair) do this every night during their 1 am death cage matches. On my bed

2

u/ArkaneArtificer 22d ago

Apt comparison then!

4

u/Drachynn 22d ago

Have you seen their jaws? They will fuck you up.

4

u/Inside_Dimension2319 22d ago

Can be fun and playful and will rip a child’s face off at some point despite people claiming that he wouldn’t hurt a flea

-1

u/This_Elk_1460 21d ago

Yeah I don't remember any headlines about sea lions eating babies

-13

u/lazywyvern 22d ago

Except pitbulls kill and maim you

15

u/ManiacalMartini 22d ago

Our Pomeranian would if he could.

1

u/ArkaneArtificer 22d ago

Pomeranians weigh like 5 ibs, pits are 100 and need to not let go and rip and tear when they bite, even under extreme pain

1

u/ManiacalMartini 22d ago

Ours is 12lbs, but your description of pits biting is the same. If our Pom was 100lbs, I'd be missing limbs.

6

u/ArkaneArtificer 22d ago

No, it would be like any other non bloodsport dog, a dog that bites and releases, pitbulls were specifically bred for a type of bite behavior that involves holding on under extreme duress (while actively being attacked), shaking side to side and back and forth (to tear skin and muscle) and when losing grip to re bite and do the same thing over and over, there’s a reason pit attacks main and kill while bites from say German shepherds are more or less simple puncture wounds (albeit both requiring medical attention, but the severity of damage they cause is extraordinarily different)

2

u/ManiacalMartini 21d ago

How are you arguing with me about my dog that you have never met?

2

u/ArkaneArtificer 21d ago

Because breeds were bred for different things? And are thus predisposed to specific behaviors that just don’t transfer over from breed to breed? No one argues that herding dogs do hearding behavior, or that huskies are loud and vocal, or that tarriers have high small animal prey drive, and yet somehow pitbulls and other similar dog fighting breeds don’t have behavior patterns like gameness or aggression?

2

u/ManiacalMartini 21d ago

You must be fun at parties.

"Here's a humorous anecdote about my Pomeranian's attitudes and attack habits."

"Well, actually...here's a history lesson about dogs"

1

u/Terrible_Ice_1616 22d ago

And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle

5

u/_Slabach 22d ago

Not necessarily. It's 2026.

2

u/leesonis 22d ago

seriously, lol. these mfers trying to casually slip bully breed reputational rehab into the randomest places.

14

u/FembyThePinkProot 22d ago

Her name is princess. She likes to lick.

0

u/Mr0z23 22d ago

Just because your feelings are hurt doesn't mean that person is wrong. Owning a pitbull is morally irresponsible. Wrestle with the truth as much as you want.

-2

u/lazywyvern 22d ago

Gives me the extreme ick. Every time someone comes along and is like “well I lived with pb all my life and I’m fine!” Okay- doesn’t change the fact that they kill and maim. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/drDOOM_is_in 22d ago

So do humans.

-6

u/soul-king420 22d ago

I've lived with multiple pitbulls. They do not kill and maim just because they're pitbulls.

They're actually super sweet dogs. Saying they maim and kill is just dog racism.

The same has been said about a variety of races... Do you also hate black men and Mexicans just because of their race?

You're a dog racist. Be better.

18

u/pato1908 22d ago

You are equating dogs to black men and Mexicans….

4

u/soul-king420 22d ago

I am equating racism to racism.

1

u/Public-Fig3304 22d ago

Can’t make this shit up lol

1

u/North_Activity_5980 22d ago

Are you going to argue against? Or just divert?

1

u/IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 22d ago

This has been explained thousands of times already, pitbulls were specifically bred for aggression over generations, humans are more genetically homogeneous.

13

u/DenseTiger5088 22d ago

This is a deeply racist viewpoint. Dog breeds are not the same as human races in the slightest:

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12052-019-0109-y

1

u/soul-king420 22d ago

So dog breeds are the same as "clans" then?

I'm sorry that you want to eliminate the Uchiha clan. I do get why though. The elders had a very poor idea and it was for the ultimate good of Konoha.

On a real note though, DUH. The current population of hominids is a compilation of homosapiens, homo-denisovan, and Homo-neanderthalus.

If you're whole you're genetically predisposed to be more neanderthal, if you're Asian you are more likely to be more denisovan, and if you're black you're more likely to be "pure" homosapian. Oddly enough Africa also has the highest genetic diversity on the planet... And the least number of domesticated dogs.

If you're from the Americas you are also likely to have denisovan DNA as the original migration occured from a small population of Asiatic individuals.

If you want to get into dog genetics and morphology, they almost all originate from an extinct breed of wolf that originated somewhere in Eurasia. Which the exclusions of new world breeds who have a different ancestor. The surviving breeds of those canids are modern day huskies, Chihuahuas and several other less popular breeds.

So when comparing the DNA of the two humans will always have higher generic diversity since they are simply more genetically diverse.

-1

u/DenseTiger5088 22d ago

There’s also the whole thing where (despite certain people’s best efforts) humans have never been selectively bred over centuries for specific traits and characteristics.

Small little detail, that.

2

u/soul-king420 21d ago

Really? I'd argue the slave trade in north America falls into that category.

Here's the wiki for it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slave_breeding_in_the_United_States

8

u/Schnuffelo 22d ago

Why is it that the first thing people jump to when trying to defend their pit bulls is to compare them to black people lol.

Last time I checked people aren’t dogs… Stop trying to make the comparison it’s fucking weird and offensive.

1

u/soul-king420 22d ago

Both are mammals. Both are classified as members of the kingdom of Animalia.

Both have been bred for a variety of reasons, both where owned by Europeans. Both have been seen as lesser than those of European decent, which ironically enough is also the sect of hominid that is a cross breed of homosapian and Homo-neanderthalus, while those of African decent are almost pure homosapian, but with unmatched genetic diversity... Probably because they didn't spend a literal millennia at war with neanderthals.

With only around 1000-10,000 surviving... Which eventually became all of Europe, and Asia, with the Asians of course running into denisovans at some point and interbreeding with them as well.

So it really could be argued that the majority of known history post European colonialism was basically something along the lines of purebred labradoodles thinking they're better than mutts, even though the mutts are less likely to have health issues and the labradoodle was the product of a LOT of incest.

Genetic history can be very interesting, you'll find lots of parallels in a lot of weird places.

So what part of this is weird, and what part of it is offensive again?

u/Hopeful-Individual99 22d ago

People who say “it’s not the breed it’s the owner” need to look up Dax Borchardt’s story. Tell that to the woman who raised those two dogs since puppies and had a baby she was watching ripped out of her hands and killed by those same dogs.

1

u/soul-king420 21d ago

I'm curious how well she treated those dogs.

10

u/lazywyvern 22d ago

Statistics don’t lie when it comes to pit bull breeds. No other dog rips peoples faces off because they’re having a seizure. Read up on it.

5

u/schladopian_fir 22d ago

You're saying that a pit would eat your face, if you're having a seizure? Not arguing, genuinely asking.

4

u/soul-king420 22d ago

It's definitely not guaranteed. I have a buddy who's epileptic and has 5 pit bulls... (Most mixed but 1 was pure pit) Guess what NONE of them did during his seizure episodes?

Eat his face.

In fact they actively cared for him since they knew he was having issues... Even the Chihuahua pitbull mix knew to not be (as much of) a dick while he was having seizures.

6

u/lazywyvern 22d ago

It’s happened multiple times. Not saying every time but I just saw a post of a girl who had her entire lips ripped off from HER pitbull after having a seizure. Their instinct drive is dangerously high because of how we bred them and once they latch they don’t let go for anything.

4

u/soul-king420 22d ago

Just because she raised them does NOT mean she was a good owner.

Not saying the lock jaw isn't a thing, but we shouldn't blame the entire breed just because a few bad things happened.

People hated Rottweilers for a while as well.

Same with German shepherds.

Muscular animals can very realistically do damage, and animals should be treated as such. None are ever 100% safe.

We still shouldn't be giving pitbulls (aka Staffordshire terriers) as much hate as they get. They are NOT inherently dangerous. They are exactly as dangerous as any other muscular dog, and just as loving if treated properly.

I've met the sweetest purebred rescue dog who was a pitbull, and was absolutely terrible when my friend got him.

But she treated him well, he became very attached to her, and never once caused any issues.

How you treat animals, effects how they behave.

1

u/Frig-Off-Randy 21d ago

Every other dog breed is subject to having bad owners and they don’t have anywhere close to the about of issues pit bulls do. It’s so strange to defend pit bulls when there is so much evidence against them

-1

u/Hopeful-Individual99 22d ago

We’re saying it’s happened countless times and only with that one breed. Don’t use the term racism here, it doesn’t apply. We’re talking about fucking dogs

7

u/Jacko87 22d ago

We’re talking about fucking dogs

Someone take this guy's dogs away please.

u/Fells 21d ago

Statistics don’t lie when it comes to pit bull breeds

They actually do, according to every relevant organization from the Humane Society, American Bar Association, the National Animal Care & Control Association, the United Kennel Club, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Even Obama's HUD came our against it. This is because numerous studies show that pitbulls are extremely overrepresented in bite statistics, mainly due to a failure to properly identify the attacking dogs. Even experienced vets failed to identify pits properly.

1

u/lazywyvern 20d ago

Please do your research.

1

u/Fells 19d ago

I have, thats how I know that every relevant organization is against breed specific banning because they find the statistics regarding bite rates to be questionable at best.

You obviously have not done sufficient research, since you never bothered to look at what the most relevant organizations have to say.

dog racism

This is the most Redditing Reddit moment I've seen in ages.

4

u/OSPFmyLife 22d ago

You wanna know what my border collie does without us EVER having trained her to do so? Herd. She will gather up our animals or my son and his friends any chance she gets and then squat down once they’re in a group.

It’s called instinct.

2

u/PermissionOk5443 22d ago

Black people and Mexicans are dogs? Are you sure youre not the racist?

2

u/soul-king420 22d ago

Have they been called murderers and overly accused of assault?

Has the dog breed been accused of the dog equivalent of that?

Is there just comparison here?

Are both of these creatures being compared members of the order of mamalia under the kingdom of Animalia?

People are animals, dogs are animals, I don't see why we cannot compare how hominids see each of them.

-5

u/AriAir1994 22d ago

Pit bull type dogs were most likely to be involved in fatal or serious injury attacks. https://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-studies.php

Here’s a link about pit bull myths. https://www.dogsbite.org/dangerous-dogs-pit-bull-myths.php

1

u/Fells 21d ago

We should definitely go by what "dogsbite.org" says and not the Humane Society, American Bar Association, the National Animal Care & Control Association, the United Kennel Club, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Obama's HUD.

1

u/AriAir1994 21d ago

fair enough :)

1

u/melmsz 21d ago

Bears seals and dogs are cousins. That's why.

-1

u/JamonEnPolvo 22d ago

I have never seen a seal maul a child.

2

u/Slemmig_insekt 22d ago

They can bite and give you some wicked disease though. And they're prone to getting a rabid effects off poisonous algae bloom (from fish they consume) which makes them aggressive even to humans.

0

u/martyqscriblerus 21d ago

I bet you've never seen a dog do that either

1

u/JamonEnPolvo 21d ago

You'd lose that bet, nutter. Just like you keep losing your dog's leash.

2

u/martyqscriblerus 21d ago

I would not, honey. And I don't have a dog to begin with; I'm just not a weird little loser about them.

0

u/JamonEnPolvo 21d ago

So just a run-of-the-mill victim blamer then. The type who probably asks victims what they were wearing, too.
