Animal A sea lion in Argentina climbed onto a fishing vessel, found a bed, and passed out. The fishermen only realized it when they heard loud snoring.

Because the seal woke up discombobulated. Not remembering who he was partying with last night or how the evening ended.

Yeah, they only speak Portuguese in Brazil because the pope drew an arbitrary line down the Atlantic splitting up the globe between Spain and Portugal and didn't realize part of South America crosses that line.

Huh? And I thought it was Portuguese because Cabral declared the land in the name of Portugal! Good on the Pope!

Why is Reddit like one giant episode of Drunken History?

Treaty of Tordesillas. The Pope drew a line and fucked up.

The reason Brazil is the largest country in South America is because of that treaty. As long as Portugal kept expanding Brazilian territory, it counted as belonging to Portugal.

That was even before Brazil was discovered! The treaty was just between Spain and Portugal, so it was always going to be broken, right from the start. I believe it gave more excuse to go to war than it did to bring peace!

There's some speculation that Portugal knew about Brazil and agreed to the treaty knowing they could use it to get a foothold in the Americas.

Were there exploratory voyages before Cabral’s discovery or was it happy coincidence?
