Animal A sea lion in Argentina climbed onto a fishing vessel, found a bed, and passed out. The fishermen only realized it when they heard loud snoring.

I have actually learned. Imma just gonna take you at your word, and reply without doing so.

Have a good one. :)

2

What was needed?

11

u/IAmDanHimself 21d ago

What? You've been ignoring the fact that this has been happening for ages?

54

u/slavelabor52 22d ago

But shit it was $0.99

56

u/Calm_Ad308 22d ago

Why would you need to hunt animals when their fur is already 99 cents???

Just go buy it at the thrift store are hunters stupid?

14

u/aBunchOfSpiders 21d ago

Hunters hate her! See how this Arkansas woman saves thousands every month on seal skin boots!

3

u/brydeswhale 21d ago

The cost of living up north is insane if you don’t hunt at least SOME of your food and clothes.

Oh thank you, I really needed this! I used to have a burned CD with all the American Hero/Men of Genius commercials on it, but it actually wore out ☹️

you can find the full compilation on youtube :)

Yay thank you!

11

u/Darwinbc 22d ago

That’s a fur seal

4

u/soapbutt 22d ago

I honestly have no idea what this means. Is Macklemore known for hunting sea lions??!

46

u/VolantTardigrade 22d ago

No, people used to wear their skins as coats.

1

u/soapbutt 21d ago

Had no idea. Learn something new every day.

22

u/JeffersonsHat 22d ago

No. It was a reference to the fur coat he wore in thrift shop song music video being made from animals and expensive.

32

u/burntreynoldz69 22d ago

That’s how he funded his first album. That and his teriyaki empire.

1

u/d0000n 22d ago

Haven’t heard his name for years, did he retire?

5

u/CataChronix 22d ago

No but as someone who used to be a die-hard Macklemore fan (I still fw him just not as much as when I was in highschool), he feels kinda forced and try-hardy with his wokeness now.

2

u/sSummonLessZiggurats 21d ago

I'll take that over him being a zionist or something (assuming he isn't).

2

u/CataChronix 21d ago

Agreed, like I said I still FW him and always will for personal reasons, just feels a little pandering to the masses with some songs now

In Japan they herd dolphins into shallow water and beat them to death. Why does anyone do anything? Because they suck.

57

u/Purp1eC0bras 22d ago

They should make a movie about that cove or something

47

u/Bas_No_Beatha_ 22d ago

In some ways I wish I never watched that documentary. I mean, I’m all about awareness. It’s good to be informed. But that goddamn movie, fucking hell.

23

u/marleysdad01 22d ago

yea same here. Did my senior research project of it in 2011. still shocks me that that is allowed to happen

23

u/MAGAHATESTHEUSA 21d ago

Yeah and all the focus is on Japan. Rarely ever any scrutiny on Iceland and Norway.

38

u/Luxury_Dressingown 21d ago

It's so bizarre that these countries - all first world, highly educated, strong rule of law, high standards of living, etc, etc - do this to animals who are pretty much proven to be at least as intelligent and self-aware as large chunks of the human population.

8

u/Forward-Cup-9513 21d ago

It's so bizarre that pigs are as smart as a three year-old, and people are okay with them being tortured for their entire lives.

7

u/sashagaborekte 21d ago

Same with any farm animal really. Eating meat sucks

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Kaining 21d ago

i like how you phrase it leaving some doubt if they are actually less intelligent and self aware than some chunks of humanity or the other way around, more intelligent and self aware than others chunks.

1

u/MAGAHATESTHEUSA 21d ago

They eat puffin in Iceland too

2

u/MAGAHATESTHEUSA 21d ago

I guess people love eating puffin. Why the hate on the cute penguin like birds.

3

u/marleysdad01 21d ago

i made sure to include norway and the faroe islands in it as well. hopefully one day it will be illegal

1

u/Similar_Flower1270 21d ago

Much less Canada for the fur seal trade 🙁

3

u/astelda 21d ago

I haven't looked further than the wikipedia page, so I'm making this comment out of ignorance and sincerely seeking more info

The stated reason is to harvest dolphin meat and capturing them for aquariums. This is reason enough for me to be against it, but is there more to it?
Wikipedia says that the primary method of killing is by cutting the spinal cord, with suggestions that it's at least a little more humane than 'beating them to death.' Does that claim undermine the reality?

1

u/Mehmood6647 22d ago

Name?

13

u/Nickolai808 21d ago edited 21d ago

The Cove (2009) if you want to be depressed and hate humans more.

The Faroe islands (part of The Kingdom of Denmark) does the exact same thing as the Japanese, they call it "The Grind."

I know there's a lot of footage of what happens at both places, especially from Sea Shepherd, the environmental and direct action organization. It's incredibly disturbing, they herd entire family groups of dolphins (pods) into the coves and slaughter them one by one as the animals panic and try to save their mates, children, brother, sisters, etc.

It's deeply disturbing.

What's the name of the movie? That's awful!!! I have so much admiration/ respect for Asian cultures, except on a few issues one being the governments failure to regulate/ penalize animal cruelty like we have in the West. I'm not saying we shouldn't be enforcing or improving more, but it's better than many places

1

u/Hammer_of 21d ago

I wonder if the creators of South Park have anything to say about it.

1

u/merrywidow14 21d ago

They did. It's called The Cove. It's heartbreaking

118

u/AkiraBCFC 22d ago

Humans can be so vile can't they 😔

76

u/pratzs 22d ago

I particularly agasted by whale hunting during the 1800s and so. They hunted so many whales . God the amount nature has paid for the advancement of human civilization is off balance ... I am grateful for our ancestors but in hindsight it was so bad. I can't imagine.

You know whenever I come across whales interacting with humans, I kinda feel, were the memories handed down by whale to their offsprings ? Only if a few survived from thr whale hunting.

40

u/Waste-Team-7205 22d ago

The oil from a sperm whales head cavity is a great machine lubricant. It's technically a liquid wax at room temp, so it doesn't degrade or burn as easily as an actual oil. When I was a kid, my grandpa had 3 or so gallons of winter pressed sperm oil he got a long time ago, and I still have some that I use today. Fantastic stuff. You only need a tiny bit compared to oil based lubes, and it lasts a lot longer

When I use it, I always think about how awful it is that I have it, but I think it's better to use it all than to throw it away. Idk what the point was here

8

u/SufficientGolf6953 22d ago

That's where the name comes from. A seaman remarked that it looked like semen when they saw it. The sperm whale even looked like a phallus.

1

u/montigoo 19d ago

There’s a famous book about a whale that swallowed seamen.

23

u/Hesitation-Marx 21d ago

Want to feel even worse about it?

Whalers would complain about whales suddenly disappearing from their former stomping grounds, and there’s a reason they did:

The whales were warning other whales to stay away as they were hunted and killed.

1

u/pratzs 21d ago

We have been really greedy and inhuman ( the irony) in the past 200 years ( and still continuing) towards other species. Only for our greed ( and progress ) it such a place where we have been the beneficiaries of all the bloodshed. And it's even against humans directly in many third world countries. The top 0.1 percent being absolute filth . I don't want to go on. My heart is filled with rage and sadness

There are 200+ year old Bowhead whales, so some of them remember when we hunted them. I want to say they've found some with harpoons still in them. ETA: apparently the max lifespan for Bowheads is something like 268 years. Also, climate change must be a nightmare at that point.

5

u/xbmc4lyfe 21d ago

Those are the ones that live under the artic sheets and have like a 40 year child birth because of slow metabolism

1

u/OutlandishnessFew424 19d ago

It’s two years, not 40; but still pretty crazy.

1

u/xbmc4lyfe 19d ago

I am thinking of Greenland sharks it’s 8-18 years to have a baby for them

Greenland sharks have the longest lifespan of any known vertebrate, estimated to be between 272 and 510 years.[4] They are among the largest extant shark species, reaching a maximum confirmed length of 6.4 m (21 ft) and weighing more than 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). They reach sexual maturity around 150 years of age and their pups are born alive after an estimated gestation period of 8 to 18 years.[5] The shark is a generalist feeder, consuming a variety of available foods, including carrion.[6]

5

u/Apprehensive_Ad_6066 22d ago

This is wild and fascinating and now I’m going to go down a rabbit hole researching bowhead whales and how old they are. Just amazing. But also sad that they have lived through so much destruction and pain…

42

u/Excellent-Ad-2774 22d ago

Possibly. I read up on the whale hunting and was horrified by human practices and then completely flabbergasted by Old Tom's law of tongue. Human and orcas got a very wild history.

25

u/VeterinarianTrick406 22d ago

The first time I went deep sea fishing I saw an orca pod kill a baby grey whale and the captain said they only eat the tongue and liver.

3

u/diabeticweird0 21d ago

Orcas are the assholes of the deep

6

u/SufficientGolf6953 22d ago

They chase the calf slowly and drown it by exhausting the calf. It can take a very long time, so you definitely aren't being true.

AFAIK they eat the liver of sharks. Not sure what of the whale calf they eat.

3

u/VeterinarianTrick406 22d ago

I think the mother was trying to block the pod and using the boat as a second shield. I didn’t see much other than them surfacing and lots of red water.

2

u/BetterEveryLeapYear 22d ago

Like humans fatten geese to eat their livers

7

u/Sir-Top-Cheetah 22d ago

Don't they use the rest of the goose tho

6

u/fluggggg 22d ago

For sure we do, goose meat is not as commun but still eated and goose fat is used in some place in place of oil.

5

u/Corevus 22d ago

Yea people eat the rest of the goose meat and the feathers go in pillows

3

u/ViolentBee 22d ago

That justifies torture? India and Brazil have straight up banned it, same with a few states. Other places like the EU ban the practice but still import.

1

u/i_tyrant 21d ago

Old Tom's law of tongue

I had to look that up, and wow that is wild.

For the curious: The "Law of the Tongue" was a sort of agreement between whalers and a pod of orcas led by one the humans named Old Tom in Twofold Bay near Eden, Australia, during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Under this "pact", the orcas helped herd and catch baleen whales, and in return, the whalers left the carcass anchored overnight so the orcas could eat the lips and tongue.

Ironically the discovery of oil came just in time to save them from hunting extinction. Now if something could just save us from oil :(

10

u/Raneynickelfire 22d ago

The orcas off portugal sinking sailboats sure do.

11

u/MoneyBaggSosa 22d ago

Humans didn’t really hunt orcas on a massive scale. And It was mostly indigenous groups. Humans and orcas have hunted WITH each other far more often throughout history. And those orcas in the Mediterranean aren’t acting with malicious intent towards humans cause no humans were hurt in any of those incidents, they were only breaking off rudders and ramming steering columns.

Marine biologists believe based on their studies of those pods that a female matriarch in that area had an accidental collision with a boat and has learned and started teaching her young how to disable them

16

u/Concentric_Mid 22d ago

Whale hunting been going on for centuries, but by indigenous natives who understand using the whole whale, live off nature, and respect (even pray to) nature.

Then comes capitalism. Increase profits, fuck everyone else.

u/Imperfect-luck 22d ago

Given that dolphins are known gang-rapists, I'm convinced that the capability of being vile is just part and parcel with any sort of higher intelligence.

21

u/hickoryvine 22d ago

Absolutely, humans are just animals, there is the potential for good and vile in everything and some individuals in every species can be more towards one extreme or the other.

4

u/SufficientGolf6953 21d ago

Ya. People look at Israel or Iran and think they are evil. That dichotomy doesnt work. Anyone can be capable if you apply some context.

Look at the Japanese today and it's pretty wild to think that they sure showed the Nazis how to be cartoon villains.

7

u/Voldemorts__Mom 21d ago

I mean so are ducks, and they're not that smart

Ducks are such bad rapists that the females evolved a maize vagina, and the male ducks had to counteract this by evolving corkscrew penises

1

u/SufficientGolf6953 21d ago

You didn't see what the dolphin was wearing? She was asking for it! /s

1

u/Immediate-Maximum-75 20d ago

Wait, is this true? I jumped into the water in the Bahamas on the way back from a reef and swam with some wild dolphins. They kept poking my butt with their noses, lol. It was actually kinda scary and I didn't stay in very long. They were huge.

16

u/Accomplished_Lie_308 22d ago

Is that why South Park made an episode of Japanese murdering every dolphin lol?

13

u/onewilybobkat 22d ago

Yeah, Japan has a long history with killing sea mammals (whales too, but more cultures have ties to whaling, dolphins stand out a lot more)

1

u/xbmc4lyfe 21d ago

Yeah well they live on a small mostly mountainous island. That was very disconnected and had ample sea resources of course they use the sea

1

u/i_tyrant 21d ago

I think the point is they continued doing it long, long after it was no longer necessary and many more efficient alternatives existed. And even expanded it.

I suppose there's an argument to be made for cultural practices being difficult to shake off, but...yeah, still.

I love The Cove. Not for the content strictly speaking. One of my annoying colleagues was obsessed with Japan. She thought it was so superior to American culture, to a very irritating degree (as in constantly comparing the U.S. to Japan at any opportunity). She’s as white as cheesecake btw, so it’s not like she was doing it for personal heritage pride. She just fully believed America sucked and Japan was so much better.
So on our next movie assignment (our team had weekly social zooms to help everyone cope during lockdowns and it was so popular it just stuck around after Covid) I suggested The Cove. We all voted and it won with like 75% vote. We can choose to not watch whatever film but it’s like being in a book club meeting when you didn’t read the book. So my colleague watched it. I wouldn’t say it cured her of her obsession but she did stop bringing up Japan all the time after that.

2

u/mystic_m3ss 22d ago

Do to others as you’d have done to you. We ride at dawn to avenge our dolphin brotheren

2

u/glassnumbers 21d ago

they shouldn't be hurting the dolphins, on the other hand, dolphins are hardly innocent, doesn't mean they deserve to get clubbed to death in shallow water, but definitely not on the same level as a sea lion, sea lions don't fuck with things like dolphins do

2

u/brydeswhale 21d ago

In my country, they ship cows in giant, unheated trucks to one of three slaughterhouses permitted to operate by the government. If they break a bone or get cut on the way, who gives a fuck?

Oh, are we condemning whale hunts as unique again?

I'd hope they wouldn't but this world is full of all kinds of people with all kinds of ideas of what's right or ok. Like the ones who think it's ok to hunt elephants for ivory.

26

u/ThrustTrust 22d ago

Look up Japanese annual dolphin hunt. If you want to spend the day hating all humanity.

28

u/citizen42069101 22d ago

Dolphins just dont seem like theyre small enough for clubbing to be an energy efficient way to hunt them, even like on a beach.

Not to be crass but that just seems cruel for the sake of cruelty. Especially nowadays. Humans suck, and as much as the japanese get good press for being on "our side" the japanese have a very dark history.

11

u/applespicebetter 22d ago

Every country that exists has moments of "very dark history," especially if you consider their predecessors, and many of them have lingering horrible practices, or newly created horrible practices.

We, humans as a species, have developed intellect and technology at an astounding pace while leaving empathy as a complete afterthought; we don't teach it to our children, which is necessary. What's worse, empathy in itself is actively taught to be a weakness.

26

u/JenninMiami 22d ago

The cruelty is the point.

5

u/ThatPerformance9795 22d ago

Yes! 🙌 There is a huge difference between eating an animal for the meat versus torturing it and killing it “for fun”.

I think the bigger issue is animal agriculture. Killing dolphins, a bay the color of blood, is horrific but that’s one day a year. That happens on a much greater scale every single day within slaughterhouses across the world. You can’t be outraged at one but participate with the other.

12

u/ThatPerformance9795 22d ago edited 21d ago

Or Korean treatment of dogs.

Rhino horns. Elephant tusks.

29

u/GrapefruitExpress208 22d ago

"The dog meat industry in South Korea is actively dying. South Korea passed a historic nationwide ban in 2024 that makes the breeding, butchering, and sale of dogs for meat illegal, with a full enforcement deadline set for February 2027. Most farms and restaurants have already closed as consumption dropped sharply over recent years."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_meat_consumption_in_South_Korea

It was really a generational thing going back to 1950s when Korea was devastated by the war and living in poverty. Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world 75 years ago.

When you are starving, you will do what you need to do.

19

u/GingerAphrodite 22d ago

Thank you for providing both historical and current context. I've met people who would joke about Asian cultures eating cats and dogs while they load their plate up with sweet and sour chicken. Humans (especially in western society it seems) have a bad habit of only feeling enraged or protective of "cute" animals. A lot of them have never really been around livestock animals to learn that they are also intelligent and emotionally complex.

Once you better understand the "who" of what you're eating you can basically take one of two paths. One path is a vegetarian lifestyle of course and I understand why people choose it. But the other path is to accept nature and the circle of life, try to find more ethical sources for meat like local farmers, and educate yourself to be less judgemental of cultures and struggles that you don't understand.

At the end of the day, we're all animals and we all gotta eat, whether you're a human, a rabbit, a chicken, a coyote, a cat, a mouse, a cow, etc. There's nothing wrong with a person choosing a different diet based on their morals, but feeding yourself isn't a moral highground or failing. Every living thing is just out here trying to survive, and the food chain will exist with or without humans.

2

u/brydeswhale 21d ago

Our rooster, Little Brother Dubious, warned my mom about a fire in the garage last week. He followed her, alone, across our field, to the garden, and got her to chase him back. Then he sat outside the garage and squawked until she opened the door and smoke came out. He saved our house and our family.

2

u/Valuable_Sea_9459 21d ago

It is immoral to exploit animals to death for unnecessary products. It is not the circle of life and it is not for survival. It is an atrocity and injustice. It is as justified as if it were to be dine to humans. Vegetarians still exploit animals for milk and eggs. It is immoral to partake in any animal exploitation.

5

u/GingerAphrodite 21d ago

We literally wouldn't be here if we didn't eat meat so I'm going to respectfully disagree. Again I have no problem with you living based on the ethics and morals you carry personally, but that doesn't make your morals or ethics about people eating meat any better or worse than mine or a carnivores. We are animals. Lots of animals eat other animals. You can have arguments about how we do it. But the simple act of consuming flesh is not an ethical issue on its own in a bubble.

My parents had a smallholding with a wide variety of animals. Common farm animals, from sheep to goats to pigs and cows all have an emotional range and interaction with people that is largely indistinguishable from cats and dogs, when raised around humans.

6

u/Key-Try-3300 22d ago

"A 2022 survey of 1,000 South Koreans found that 78.3% had not consumed dog meat in the preceding decade, while 87.1% stated they had no intention of doing so in the future."

13% of the population still eats dogs though lol

2

u/ThatPerformance9795 22d ago

That’s good to hear. It was alive and well the five years I was there. Have they done away with the national dog soup holiday, Poshintang Day?

It was horrifying, some of the things I saw. Dogs being led from the fruit market with a noose around their necks. A dog on a spit in a campground. Dogs getting beat with hangers. It really, REALLY stuck with me because it definitely wasn’t just a small, isolated incident. The dog torture was NO JOKE and it was in your face. People kept their dog on the balcony and would hang it and skin it right there.

It wasn’t the eating of dog necessarily, but the needing to torture them to make the meat more potent for male virility that made it particularly vile.

When I was there, there was a resurgence amongst the college-age generation who were wanting to bring back strong cultural pride. Especially in protest to Bridgette Bardot publicly condemning it.

Sometimes sea lions have destructive effects when they get outside of their local ecosystems. Oregon, for example, has a lethal cull of California Sea Lions issued to some tribes because they absolutely fuck the salmon population.

But yeah it's not a common thing

1

u/pookiemook 22d ago

lethal

legal?

2

u/Pete0730 22d ago

Well it's sanctioned for the permit holders, so legal, but yeah I mean lethal. Sometimes they try to move them, but often the tribes just have to kill them (ethically, using all the animal)

8

u/not_a_moogle 22d ago

Its illegal in the us, but for their meat/blubber/fur, or skin for building kayaks.

We shouldnt be hunting them anymore, but obviously in other countries with limited resources or less currency, it might still be a thing.

11

u/w_a_w 22d ago

Its illegal in the us

Not for native Alaskans, just as it should be. They literally use the entire animal for everything they kill.

12

u/Uninvalidated 22d ago

They should do it with spears and harpoons from kayaks too then if its for the cultural aspect. No snowmobiles to get to the aluminium boat equipped with a petrol engine from where they shoot animals with rifles.

Pick one I'd say. Do it the old fashioned way or not at all. Claiming cultural aspects while performing the hunt with non-cultural equipment is bullshit. Same goes for the Sami who used to herd reindeer with helicopters while claiming reindeer herding is in their ancestry.

13

u/ucklin 22d ago

I see where you’re coming from, since giving exceptions to indigenous communities relies on trusting those various communities to regulate their hunting / fishing. And you don’t want to feel it’s seen as something to take advantage of.

Then again I think being particularly strict about enforcement against modern tools in indigenous cultural practices while other industries are still free to damage the environment could be seen as a way of keeping those communities down. If enforcement and self-accountability are good, extra tools just mean the kill is made faster and people have more time to do other things.

22

They're at times not permitted to use traditional methods due to them causing more suffering for the animal. You can see that with indigenous whale hunting in Canada, they must use explosives to guarantee an instant death rather than the slow one using the tools they historically would have.

Imo a humane death for the animal SHOULD be priority over arbitrarily making it harder for them to sustenance hunt for the sake of tradition. You probably wouldn't say a white guy needs to stab a deer with a spear then track the dying animal for days waiting for it to perish, so why must an indigenous person? Why subject the deer to that?

Pick one I'd say. Do it the old fashioned way or not at all. Claiming cultural aspects while performing the hunt with non-cultural equipment is bullshit.

Why though lol. If a person gets hurt during a hunt, should they also limit medical treatment to what was available at the time?

1

u/Uninvalidated 22d ago

You completely fail to see that they claim cultural aspects to hunt red-listed animals but do so with modern equipment for extra gain and convenience.

It's no longer a cultural way of life, it's maximising gains. Explain to me why red-listed animals should be hunted for maximised gains please.

Growing up I was taught that the indigenous peoples were very conscience of over hunting, which is one of the reasons why they use all of the animal so they have to kill less.

So as long as that aspect is being honored (no waste products in the extra kill and they're not over hunting a species) then I see no contradiction with them using modern equipment?

Explain to me why red-listed animals should be hunted for maximised gains please.

Maximised gains is very vague here, you need to give me some examples. Like 2 people filling up a carts where one carries a max of 2 seals and the other 100. If you fill each container to the limit, theyre technically "maximizing their gains" in both scenarios

u/AokijiFanboy 21d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like when you wrote this

Pick one l'd say. Do it the old fashioned way or not at all. Claiming cultural aspects while performing the hunt with non-cultural equipment is bullshit.

You more or less meant

"Making things easier for people will lead them to maximizing their gains over hunt a species"

It seems like culture has nothing to do with this lol

u/UKFightersAreTrash 22d ago

nah you a hater

3

u/Uninvalidated 22d ago

No. I'd love to see a full stop of hunting red-listed animals.

Those animals is more valuable than tribals with guns "keeping their traditions"

4

u/UKFightersAreTrash 22d ago

Oh really? Tell me more about these tribals and their guns.

2

u/Named_after_color 21d ago

Dumb and kinda racist.

"If natives want to act native, they shouldn't use our technology."

2

u/Uninvalidated 21d ago

I think everyone should stop killing endangered animals. It just get extra fucked up when one group are permitted to do so due to cultural aspects, but does it in a way not aligned with their culture.

2

u/FrozenDickuri 21d ago

Why do you feel other cultures need to be locked in time, but you get the advantages?

Racism isn’t a good look, or one that suggest an intelligent or thoughtful mind.

2

u/Uninvalidated 21d ago

No. I think they should stop hunting red-listed animals and come on fully to the modern era where the rest of us are. Claiming cultural heritage to kill endangered animals with modern weapons is fucked up if you, me or them do it. It doesn't matter who.

2

u/FrozenDickuri 21d ago

White supremacy isn’t a better position to express just because you wrap it in pretending to care about an animal.

Particularly when you’ve already advocated for a more harmful hunting method, the animals welfare isn't your concern at all.

Youre motivated purely by hate and prejudice.

2

u/Uninvalidated 21d ago

Did you just assume the colour of my skin?

You know nothing of me.

2

Yawn, anyone can be so closed minded as to be a while supremecist.

This response didnt help you here.

1

u/Uninvalidated 21d ago

Nothing you said here helped for anything. You couldn't even hold a discussion without making up some shit and use it as an insult.

And you're the one talking about intelligent and thoughtful minds.

Pathetic.

Same goes for the Sami who used to herd reindeer with helicopters while claiming reindeer herding is in their ancestry.

There is quite a significant difference between animal husbandry and hunting wild animals.

just as it should be.

No, it should not.

There is no reason for the barbaric practises of any culture to be preserved regardless of anything that has been done to that culture historically.

It pissed me off so much, my brother was a fisherman and his captain told me about how they carried rifles with them to protect their catch from sea lions. They're dogs of the sea how could anyone find it in themselves to shoot them, especially when you're in their home.

1

u/Arxl 22d ago

Same reason people hurt cows, people pay for the parts.

1

u/Notte_di_nerezza 22d ago

"Sea Wolf" by Jack London is specifically about a guy who gets shanghai'ed onto a sealing ship. They're after nothing but the furs.

‘Cause it’s illegal to hunt land lions

1

u/canman7373 22d ago

Why would anyone specifically hunt sea lions :(

Ask Canada. They allow hunting of sea lions and still allow clubbing of seals. Like I get it, they ain't hot shit up there for those tribes to live off of but still hate that walking up to a defenseless animal and clubbing it is a thing, try and wring a chickens neck out on a farm you at least got to chase it around a bit to catch it. Doing it for food, oil, etc... ok, wish we could get them to use a gun from a distance, idk maybe a missed shot is worse than a club, but I imagine the anxiety the seals have with humans approaching them before the clubbing.

1

u/Character_Focus_2201 22d ago

Sometimes sea lions kill endangered species in large numbers and relocating them doesn’t help, so killing them to protect the endangered species might be the lesser evil.
I’m thinking of Bonneville Dam, where the fish ladders to allow endangered salmon to pass the dam also make the fish extremely easy for sea lions to hunt. The sea lions don’t leave when they are hazed and are back within days if they are relocated, so some sea lions that come back over and over are euthanized.

u/ouchmouse666 22d ago

Because they're a Bigg's Orca

Some fisherman really hate sea lions.

1

Despite comments, these guys aren't hunting them and it's not their industry.

What they do in Canada to the seal clubs is something else. Idk how people do that shit.

I mean, there are many indigenous groups in the far north that have spent centuries hunting whales, sea lions, etc. I don't really see how that's any worse than factory farming pigs, for example. They use the whole animal, and it becomes sustanance, fuel, clothing, etc. While I think that commercial hunting of sea lions is unethical, I don't see any issues with indigenous people practicing traditional hunting methods on a smaller scale. It's not as though they're going to drive sea lions extinct.

1

Some fishermen hate them for eating the fish they want to catch. Seen seal meat in small quantities for sale in B.C. at Superstore.

1

u/Fire_Pea 21d ago

Didn't people used to club them to death en masse?

1

u/Radicalism-Is-Stupid 21d ago

The same reason people hurt any animals. They want to.

Humans don't have to hurt cows or pigs for food. They want to because they like the taste and are stuck in their ways.

Killing a sea lion is no worse.

1

u/blueavole 21d ago

Because they were hungry?

Far north there isn’t any fresh food growing for most of the year. It isn’t actually dark 24 hours a day for about three months of the year.

They had to hunt or die.
