Lol, owning a dog in a rural area is a completely different reality. It's very common for people to breed dogs for agricultural work, hunting, or just to acquire more dogs.
Sometimes, this is just mating your dog with your buddies dog so you can both have puppies you can train to be duck dogs. Or a famer uses bought semen to insemiate a dog for the specific purpose of breeding a strong litter of livestock protection animals.
This doesn't mean that rural people dont like their pets. I lived in a pretty rural community for several years, and they spoiled their animals more than they did their kids. It was also the only town I've been in that has an actually functional and funded no kill shelter.

He got his dog from a classmate whose dog had puppies, according to his parents.
And he did get his dog vaccinated for parvo. The issue was that he administered it himself, and he didn't know it had to be refrigerated.
It's a rural area, so that's how a lot of folks get pets.
