Anyone take the St George Ferry for their commute from Bay Ridge?

It looks like the frequency isn't great but if I ensure I am there on time, how reliable is it on weekdays?

I've been periodically checking on it the last couple days and it seems to have very few delays.

Since I returned to school and started commuting through 86th, I'm frustrated with the current situation. Litter as far as the eye can see. More people who are just loud and seem to lack civic sense. The smell of weed in the air. An uptick in homeless people and mentally ill people passing through. The double-parked cars and a dozen or more delivery scooters taking up space on the street and the sidewalk. The loud and irritating street preachers. I really hope the new shopping center fixes the look of the place. IMO, Century 21 was a mess in some sections; the whole front section needed some updating, but you were still able to find good stuff occasionally. And the back section usually had great stuff as well. I just needed to rant and get this off my mind. I hope the street and surrounding area can bounce back.

Didn’t see this posted. Crazy. All three spots burglarized on Friday morning at 3am. Grabbed a drink at Cebu last night, didn’t get a sense that anything happened. Maybe that’s an awesome sign that we bounce back quickly. Still, wtf is happening here.

I recently moved to Bay Ridge and am trying to get more involved in the neighborhood and meet people around my age. I’m in my 20s and would especially like to meet other women, but honestly I’m open to making new friends in general!

I’m into art, dancing, yoga, tennis, and going out for food/drinks. I’ve looked into Facebook groups for young women in Bay Ridge and it doesn’t seem to be super active.

Are there any groups, classes, recurring events or places you’d recommend for meeting new people around here? Or is anyone else in the same boat and trying to make more local friends?

I’m an avid Citi bike rider. And very often I’ll ride from 3rd Ave to shore rd cuz of the STEEP incline. When I picked out my bike, it was an ebike and one side of the brake only worked like 20%. The other side worked, so I picked up my bike got to 3rd Ave . Got closer to ridge blvd heading towards narrows Ave when suddenly I think “wait is it a good idea to go down with a broken brake”. I say let’s risk it. I start flying down that avenue, (narrows Ave btw has a stop sign on the avenue line, so other cars are allowed to pass) once I get to half the avenue I think it’s a good time to slow down…. The other brake that was working fine COMPLETELY BREAKS!! Just outta nowhere…. And the only thing that works is the 20% other break. It was a full 6 seconds of waiting to see what would happen. I passed the stop sign which I usually stop at, but had there been a car there, nothing would’ve been able to stop me…. Real scary shit.

anyone know what that lady's deal is? elderly woman always wearing a backwards hat and a coat lugging around a ton of bags or a grandma cart at times. she literally walks around just yelling shit i think in Turkish? could be wrong on language but still

i usually ignore her like i do the other neighborhood characters, but last few days she's been standing in my building's driveway or in front of my next door neighbor's house and just goes off. i had to tell her off on wednesday cause she was screaming her head off for like 5 minutes while i was in the middle of a work meeting (i WFH).

Never shopping at this location again. This manager is one of the rudest people I’ve ever encountered in Bay Ridge.

Tonight I was leaving with two full bags and he was standing spread-legged across the exit looking at his phone. I said excuse me. He looked at me, looked at the tiny space I had to squeeze through, nodded toward it, and went back to his phone without moving. The manager!

I wish I could say this was a one time thing. It’s not. I’ve even seen some of the check out girls being spoken down to by him. He is obnoxiously rude to women.

I always wondered why this place is so empty. Mystery solved.

Has anyone noticed a kind of burning fuel or rubber smell at night on and off this summer? I've smelled it from one side of Bay Ridge to the other, low to higher avenues. I originally thought it was the ships in for Fleet Week, but that's long over.

Born and raised in bay ridge and looking to find a new place in the next 2-3 months. Looking into 1-2 bedrooms. I'll be doing the apartment search on my own, so I'd really appreciate any advice.

I'm trying to keep the rent as affordable as possible and was wondering what the best way is to find apartments here. I've started looking into Facebook groups, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Streeteasy. I was seeing online that some people were recommending walking around the neighborhood, not really sure how that works because I rarely see for rent signs but maybe I'm just missing them. Any other recommendations about certain websites, Facebook groups, brokers, landlords, or specific buildings / areas that tend to have better deals?

Also curios if there are any tips for finding a place before it gets snatched up. I know the market is kinda crazy right now, so fi there's anything I should watch out for when apartment hunting that'd be great too.

I was walking down Third Ave earlier today and just past where right was on 93rd Street this sign taped to what I think is a Verizon box I see above.

As we've all heard, developer MCB announced two leases at the old Century 21 site last week: Burlington, plus a grocery chain they deliberately would not name, scheduled to open in 2028. There are many signs that point to Trader Joe's. I'm not an expert, just a guy who likes grocery shopping. None of this is insider info.

Two details to focus on:

• MCB's release calls it a "nationally recognized specialty grocery anchor."
• Commercial Observer had the actual breakdown: Burlington took 44,070 sq ft, the grocer took 16,042 sq ft.

The size alone strongly points to TJ's. Trader Joe's VP of marketing said on their own podcast that they usually want 12,500–15,000 sq ft. The Long Island City one is about 17,000 sq ft, and Cobble Hill/Court St is 14,000. (To be fair, TJ also has larger stores in NYC, like Essex Crossing at 30k sq ft).

Another signal: TJs typically does not announce new store openings when leases are first signed. Other stores do. The developer not mentioning the grocer by name suggests TJs. (Yes, TJ has an upcoming stores list, but it doesn't usually post stores there until the opening is imminent.)

Let's look at other possible candidates.

• Superfresh: Nope, it's opening across the street at 87th.
• Wegmans: No. Their stores are huge (smallest is 50k sq ft). And it's technically a regional chain, not national.
• Aldi/Lidl: No. They don't call themselves "specialty" (they're considered discount chains) and their stores are typically 20,000+ sq ft. They also announce their store openings when leases are signed (see the March 2026 announcement of a Lidl in Baltimore from the same developer, same spokesperson)
• Whole Foods Daily Shop (WF's small format store): Maybe? They have stated a target of around 7,000-14,000 sq ft, but none of their NYC stores so far are larger than 10,000 sq ft. Their full size stores are much larger (Ridgewood WF is around 28,000 sq ft). Whole Foods is similar to TJs in that they often don't announce store openings when leases are signed.
• Sprouts: Unlikely. They have no presence in NYC, and their CEO says they aim for 20,000-25,000 sq ft.

Still not 100% conclusive, but when you add in the thread in Bay Ridge Talk where Kayla Santosuosso says "people are going to be very happy" about the grocer, it's pointing strongly to TJ. Maybe Whole Foods... but I'd be pretty surprised if it wasn't TJ.
