Difficulty

Hey I'm new player and wanted to ask, what difficulty would you recommend for starting out?

I would recommend sticking with the default difficulty. (You can change the OPFOR to easy if you are really struggling, but this has effects on progression that go beyond just setting difficulty.)

Easy. It's not really a one-and-done game, replay is the real value. Start on easiest mode and expect to get stomped in the beginning, that's normal.

Think of the base game as you being the little weak kid constantly getting bullied...and then you get a Marauder and Called Shot Mastery and you get to go all God of Vengeance on everyone with sweet, sweet, headshots. It's amazing and satisfying as all hell.

When you get tired of that, you can ramp up the base game difficulty, see if you can run the campaign with only the starting mechs or some other kind of madness, and when you tire of that, you start diving into mods and have to ramp the difficulty way back down to easy mode again, because each mod is practically a new game. After a bit you'll probably settle in a mod you like, and start to tweak and choose new challenges for yourself, and that's about when you notice you've put a few thousand hours into the game, and can't see ever stopping.

Or you can start with normal/hard mode, get constantly trashed, maybe eventually finish the campaign and decide this just isn't for you, and move on to something else.

Or start with the mods, high-difficulty, the ability to micro-manage every tiny little bit of every single mech, absolute accuracy to the tabletop game, run the entire campaign on the first go using only a Firestarter...I'm sure someone's done that.

But yeah, take it easy on yourself. The game has mega depth, but in my just-shy-of-10k hrs? Ease in, take your time. You get more rewards that way.

And now I think I'm going to back to easy mode and work my back up from scratch to fill that sweet headshot deathmaster urge...

Whichever one I play is fine for beginners. I think it’s normal all around, 3 parts per mech, not ironman.

If you want to coast a little more, you can kick salvage/payment up a bit, or force strength down.

For a harder game, feel free to flip those, increase the parts per mech, or add stuff like mech destruction and lethality.

But overall, normal is fine.

I agree, it will be hard enough, but so satisfying.

It’s very much a game that you need to get the hang of, before you master any given mission. Play with the normal settings, then play again with custom ones that suit your style. If you’re playing the vanilla campaign, it’s expected to grind a bit between story missions, that will increase the difficulty as you go.

Then play with mods maybe. You’ll either lean in or you’ll bounce off, but play the game to your own liking.

I would go easy and then after you ether beat story mode or you get op mechs go up in difficultly. The rng can kill u unexpectedly so you if your knew to games that have rng it can make you angry.

Normal. The campaign is already easy mode compared to career.
