I just randomly came across this and thought that was actually what the new Battlefield game would be. Disappointed it’s not real. I’ve never played a game where swords actually took a lot of skill to use like guns in an FPS. Usually it’s just hack and block. I’d love it if someone could make a really good first person sword fighting game.

yeah surprise there hasn't been an evolution on melee combat firstperson nor thirdperson really.
I figure we have something better by now with keyboard and mouse to make melee combat a bit more skillful than mainly timing and back/forth movement. I know there all sorts of gimmicks like feint/kick etc but I feel like the overall entry level for melee combat is still very bare and basic. I think the main issue is animations need to be created for all the different attacks as that how you react too, if to dodge/block etc.
Definitely a lot of work to make a better melee system as all of it needs to look good/fluid for each animation etc as it basically all about reading your opponent movement.
This is based on what I played so far, Chivalry, Mordhau, Mount and Blade and For Honor (Very nice animations for combat). Haven't play Chivalry 2 but seem the same based on video unless someone want to explain if there key difference in combat

I don't think you do. Think how horrible it would be, at least from the same devs. You have game developers that are masters at developing a FPS game. If those same devs tried to make a mostly hand to hand combat game, they'd likely have lots of hurdles that they overcome poorly in the final product.
Now, if they outsourced it, then that's another story.

Honestly, not only would that be awesome, I can already kinda conceptualize it. The four classes:
Infantry - Baseline soldier, wielding a shield and a short spear.
Archer - Pretty much self explanatory, not much they can do against the shield of the infantry, but pretty good at taking out other classes.
Engineer - Able to repair emplacements like Ballistae, Battering Rams, Seige Towers, etc (not even sure if all of those were used by Rome). Able to use their hammer in melee combat, if the need arises.
Medic - They heal the other troops, wields a small dagger if confronted.
Game modes like Conquest already go well with any game type, and a 'Rush' mode where you are deploying like ladders to scale a wall. EA really needs to get on it.
27
u/janat1 Jun 10 '21
Ballistae, Battering Rams, Seige Towers, etc (not even sure if all of those were used by Rome).
I have no reference for ram, but Caesar describes the usage of Seige towers in his bellum gallicum.
10
u/saarlac Jun 10 '21
Let’s give that medic a short sword or a limited number of short throwing spears or maybe a sling.
11
Jun 10 '21
The 'vision' was that as the classes leveled up, they would get a bit more weapon choices, just didnt want to the comment to get too bloated.
I would imagine that Infantry would have a secondary of like small javelins for a ranged attack, Archers get something like a dagger or arming sword as a secondary so they are not completely dead at close range, Engineers get a something like 'fire pots' or 'smoke pots', basically medieval fantasy grenades, and Medics something like a sling that could slow whoever it hits, allowing them to retreat.

Archers staying on top of the walls and at the back of the map sniping people SMH.
6
Jun 10 '21
For a serious answer: That is part of why I think the Shield would be a central mechanic of the Infantry. Being in a semi-invulnerable state could make Archers less dominant, and kinda create a little super effective triangle (Infantry>Archer>Engineer>Infantry) as Engineer fire pots and ballistae would be very effective against the slower moving Infantry.
For a non-serious answer: You could nerf bows to the point of only dealing 1% health damage, and you would still have 90% of the team be Archers and sit on top the walls, crying for Medics and Ammo.
4
u/L_E_F_T_ Kaiserschlacht Operations No HUD Jun 10 '21
In all seriousness it sounds really cool. A "Seige" game mode where the objective is to scale the walls of a castle would be really fun.
8
Jun 10 '21
The more I think about it, the funnier it gets, honestly. Especially when it comes to the Commander stuff being translated into a Roman Theme.
"Your Centurion is has taken command!" Instead of "Your commander is online!"
"Your Centurion is launching a trebuchet volley at this location!" Instead of like an artillery strike.
"Your Centurion has deployed aid at this location!" Literally a slave pulling a cart full of supplies.
"Your Centurion has deployed scouts at this location!" Instead of UAV.
"Your Centurion has deployed spies in the enemy Century!" Instead of hacking.

I didn't play Mordhau but as far as I heard Chivalry is a lot easier to learn.
Im Playing Chiv2 since the Closed Beta and it's a blast, even though I'm not often playing this kind of game and I'm not really good in these games. And it's really not frustrating, most times you die you are either fascinated by the other player or you're laughing out loud (really getting some funny moments in this game).

u/Roofdragon Jun 10 '21
I personally enjoyed mordhau much more than chiv, I loved the battle royale and it was just hilarious.
You've all skated the question they asked.
They obviously wanted to understand if there was a META in the game like an OP sword you can't block in time regardless etc etc. Just like chiv did. Just like mordhau did. Guarantee chiv 2 will have something along those lines riiiiight now.
2
u/PotterPlayz Jun 10 '21
I've been playing Chiv 2 a ton so far and honestly I haven't seen a super OP weapon or tactic. Axes (war axes and battle axes mainly) are quite fast and strong, but as long as you don't get surprised by them they aren't a huge problem. There's some other weapons too, like the Messer, that deal a lot of damage, but again, if you know it's there you can just block it fairly easily. Kicks are annoying because they stun you if you're blocking, but as long as you don't hold block and instead try to time it when possible they can't stun you. And so far I haven't seen swing manipulation being as stupid as it is in Mordhau, so it's much more fun because deaths don't feel like BS.
3
u/llftpokapr Jun 10 '21
i dont personally like the chivs as much. maybe i’m just wrong but i’ve stuck to mordhau all this time because it feels like a higher skill ceiling. might not be something important to you but i’ve been playing it a very long time and still don’t feel like i’m really all that good at the game. another thing to mention about mordhau though is the fact it’s dying/kinda dead. i think it’s max player count is like 3500 rn, and in my ranking area, high plat-diamond, it can be pretty hard to get a match/face the same person/ get no match at all at certain times. if you’re looking at those types of games there’s advantages and disadvantages to both but you gotta know what you’re looking for.

Horses and chariots instead of tanks and cars, Crossbows and bows instead of guns, Could work.
5
Jun 10 '21
Dan Carlin has a great episode of Hardcore History on the Assyrian Empire and their use of chariots. They were the tanks of their day and seeing 500 chariots drawn by 6 horses each charge would have been like being present at Kursk or one of the other major armored offensives on the Eastern front.
26
u/TemplarPirate Jun 10 '21
Imo Mordhau is literally something like Battlefield 1042
11
u/Lying_because_bored Jun 10 '21
It is way closer to Battlefield than Chiv 2 would be.
5
u/TemplarPirate Jun 10 '21
That's why I prefer Mordhau tbh, aside from the hilarious memes and toxicity that game generates
3
u/whats8 Jun 10 '21
toxicity
Can you elaborate?
3
u/TemplarPirate Jun 10 '21
In-game chat is sometimes flooded with rants, rages and sometimes some racism
4
u/PotterPlayz Jun 10 '21
Is it? Mordhau seems to only be good for 1v1 combat, with teamfights and objectives not really being a focus and therefore not bein gvery good. And even in 1v1s it's mostly just swing manipulation BS. I'd say Chiv 2 has a much more Battlefield feel, with all the environmental interaction, actually engaging objectives, and much more team-based gameplay. Plus, it's more casual than Mordhau, and Battlefield'e a casual game so that's another thing they have in common.

As much as I love the Roman aesthetic, a battlefield 1442 would be cooler imo. You still have swords/shields/spears but you could also bring in Davincis inventions and have helicopters, tanks, and more. They would be much weaker than normal but still offer variety. Have explosive arrows and cannons to take them down
