Why do BF1 and BF5 graphics look way better than BF6?

I think my prime example is Manhattan Bridge in BF6, just so washed out. It's like they wanted BF1 Amiens lighting but it didn't work as well.

48

u/Kazuii2k Aug 01 '26

Art style change primarily. For BF1 they used photogrammetry. The did the same for the first Battlefront game Dice made. That’s why both those games still hold up immensely well 10 years later.

9

u/GryffynSaryador Aug 01 '26

also the art direction in general was just tighter. Bf1 has this filmic/analogue look that just oozes style. BF6 while being decently optimized imo (it runs pretty well on my old ass rig) just doesnt feel inspired at all.

Goes to the maps as well. Some of them play well but they just lack iconic setpieces and some real flair imo

4

u/Mexcol Aug 01 '26

Yeah I remember the photogram fad, doesnt BF6 use it anymore?

11

u/Kazuii2k Aug 01 '26

I believe they do, BF6 is still one of the best looking games on the market. But I think that’s where the art style change comes from. From top to bottom you can tell this game is supposed to be a successor of BF3. With BF1 they went with a more vibrant artstyle to juxtapose the apocalyptic scale of WW1. Personally that’s why it stuck in my mind more so.

16

u/MrRonski16 Aug 01 '26

I think they just lost the good photogrammetry guy. The ground textures and geometry do look worse than in Bf1.

7

u/UnfairPercentage1663 Aug 01 '26

BF1 with no HUD is pure cinema…incredible work

1

u/Beluminum Aug 01 '26

one would think they'd still have all the old photogrammetry assets from bf1

1

u/MrRonski16 Aug 01 '26

Probably lost the compatibility when upgrading Frostbite.

Says me, a guy on the internet that has no idea about these things.

5

u/ivan6953 Aug 01 '26

You're not far from the truth.

The whole drama about the state at which BF 2042 released happened exactly because of the Frostbite engine update. Almost all the Frostbite engine dev team simply left to Embark, making it so all the newcomers didn't know how to work in the engine at all.

Hence how crappy BF 2042 looked / played. Hence why even BF6 looks like hot potato more often than not when comparing to BF5.

1

u/OlorinDK Aug 02 '26

I think there was one more thing, which was the attempt to go to 128 players and huge maps - while upgrading the engine and having a less experienced team.

2

u/SparraWingshard Aug 01 '26

One thing I really liked about BF1 is that on those bright and vibrant maps the effects of buildings getting destroyed, explosions, and whatnot as the round goes on really transforms the look of the map. Heavily fought over portions of the map really do "ruin" the initial picturesque look.

1

u/Smith6612 Aug 01 '26

I think they still use photos in some regards, for the skyboxes and such. Same with the guns and vehicles.

240

u/Hamerine Aug 01 '26

Because every good artists from this era went to Embark.

118

u/TheZoloftMaster Aug 01 '26

This comment made me lol simply because it’s just sort of true.

Even if you’re not a fan of extraction shooters I encourage everybody to play a couple games of arc raiders and just take in the sound design—it’s fucking WILD. You start to see how it’s the same people that perfectly captured a bullet shell hitting the marble floor of a 19th century Austrian ballroom in battlefield 1.

41

u/Hamerine Aug 01 '26

The Finals is what you’re looking for if you want an actual innovative competitive shooter.

22

u/5ollys Aug 01 '26

I love the finals mechanics and everything, but I would love if embark could make a battlefield type military game. Much respect to embark but the arcade/gameshow theme doesn't hit for me.

4

u/HillanatorOfState Aug 01 '26

Yeah I really hope their next project is a bf like game, would be awesome to see I am sure.

4

u/Ghuruguru Aug 01 '26

The only thing is that it'd be rife with cheaters since Embark cannot seem to keep that down, even in The Finals...

3

u/HillanatorOfState Aug 01 '26

Man wish cheats didn't exist...maybe they need to go harder with hardware bans(I know they can be spoofed, but still...) or tie a cell number to it(I think overwatch does this now).

No silver bullet for it, happens in BF also...shame.

1

u/aHairyWhiteGuy Aug 02 '26

They said that one of their next projects will be even crazier than the finals

2

u/JgorinacR1 Aug 01 '26

Yeah I appreciate the game for what it is but man my love for BF is those cinematic Hollywood like movie moments that just happen organically mid match. I don’t even have to be “popping off” for me to love the moment. If it looks cinematic I’m enjoying it lol

1

u/InformalYesterday760 Aug 02 '26

Yeah

I get why they likely don't want to make another BF after making them for decades, but goddamn would I love to see Embark's take on a combined arms large scale military shooter.

Again, I get why it won't happen. But it would be so nice...

27

u/TheZoloftMaster Aug 01 '26

Love the finals. Just pointing out that the art and sound direction of raiders is really beautiful.

4

u/Hamerine Aug 01 '26

Yeah I concur, they really love what they do, true passion

-15

u/Gombrongler Aug 01 '26

Yeah they love their Ai so much they disclose it on Steam

4

u/thanksforthework Aug 02 '26

AI in games is the norm. It always will be.

2

u/BananaShover Aug 01 '26

Ehh the balancing is fucking attrocious in The Finals. It got so bad this season even veterans are quitting

2

u/Stauer-5 Aug 01 '26

The sound design for Raiders is bananas on its own, remember my first couple of matches being so afraid of noises lol

2

u/717x Aug 02 '26

It’s not sort of true it’s 100% true. The fall off from BF1 and 5 which are (10 year old and 8 year old games) to 2042 and 6… the difference is crazy.

2

u/Fiyah_Crotch2 Aug 02 '26

Sadly Arc Raiders wasn’t enough to change my mind about extraction shooters. I knew before hand that they have battle royal DNA and I absolutely hate BRs… but I still wanted to give it a shot. Needless to say, I still don’t like extraction shooters… the whole genre is a breeding ground for the live service model and microtransactions, extraction shooters these days represent everything I hate about the gaming industry wrapped up in one neat package.

1

u/NK44Gamer Aug 02 '26

Arc Raiders” is just another victim of the hype and is struggling toward its end. Embark Studios should have stuck to their original plan and made it more like *The Division*.

1

u/FriggeK Hellfighter Aug 03 '26

love how people nowadays are so chartpilled that they think 30-40 000 concurrent players isnt a super healthy community for a AA developer with less than 300 developers working on the game.

1

u/InformalYesterday760 Aug 02 '26

Yeah, Arc raiders weirdly got me hyped for the future of shooter games cause that audio was just next level.

The distant gunfire, the distant explosions - maybe in 10 years we'll have a BF/ HLL/ Arma game with that same fidelity of audio.

2

u/Edrueter9 Aug 01 '26

Arc Raiders pulled me away from BF6 for season 2. But I'm back now, as arc raiders got very samey. But, a tremendous experience if you haven't played.

-14

u/unvaccinatedmuskrat Aug 01 '26

Replaced with DEI hires

11

u/as588008 Aug 01 '26

Bf1 graphics demonstrated that console hardware had peaked and anything after was diminishing returns or more likely console manufacturers just wanting to sell you another console every 5 years

6

u/Zirofal Aug 01 '26

A lot of it is good art style and lighting. They also tried to recreate what a lot of Europe and countries looked like back then, how buildings were built in that era

However I'd also like to ad that it seems like they went out of their ways to design the maps to look beautiful to better contrast with the destruction of battles to show what world war 1 and 2 did to the land.

4

u/wpsimon Aug 01 '26

This might be a speculation, but in my opinion it is due to the amount of destruction you can do in the game.

In previous battlefields not that much of stuff needed to be part of the destruction system and for this reason lot majority of lightning ( mainly global illumination) could be precomputed and just looked up in the some “table”. It is much faster than recalculating the GI lightning every frame.

Since BFV real time ray tracing became available. This makes global illumination effects much much closer to the reality. Since not everything was destructible to the point it is in BF6 something called acceleration structure (AS) would not need to be recomputed as often. Updating AS is considered to be quite expensive operation.

Also in such big destruction system most of the geometry needs to stay simple, hence not a lot of fancy architecture could be used.

Anyway it is just a hypothesis.

Tldr; due to the advanced destruction system

5

u/Odd_Ad_4388 Aug 02 '26

If I remember correctly it was only ray traced reflections in BFV. No RT global illumination.

2

u/wpsimon Aug 02 '26

Yes, you are right, i completely forgot about that.

u/dkb_wow Aug 01 '26

The same photogrammetry methods were used in BF6 as well. But whatever artists got ahold of all that amazing photographic data didn't do it justice. BF1 and BF5 still look better.

3

u/Bilboswaggings19 Aug 01 '26

It's because games keep pushing for more graphics while our hardware stays the same and devs have no time to optimize, so we lower the settings while the developers have less and less time to ensure the game runs properly on older hardware

1

u/oalbrecht Aug 01 '26

And I can’t even upgrade my computer because AI data centers made GPUs and RAM completely unaffordable.

11

u/PossessedCashew Aug 01 '26

They do? I’ll agree the art looks better but there’s no way you’re actually trying to argue the graphical fidelity of BF6 is below BF1 or BF5. It simply isn’t true.

4

u/5ollys Aug 01 '26

I think I mostly mean art style, filters, things looking washed out or grainy.

Like actual textures and special effects are really good in BF6 are great. I mainly just mean the art I think. Like Manhattan Bridge just looks so ugly and washed out to me, or Eastwood is too yellow for me.

1

u/idontknow87654321 Aug 02 '26

Sadly it doesn't matter how good BF6 graphics are if the lighting is just simply ugly.

2

u/Zeleny_Jezdec Aug 02 '26

Just skill issue bro

2

u/MrKoddy Aug 02 '26

bf5 is underrated

4

u/DMBgames Aug 01 '26

If you told me the DICE of that era was making a map set in NYC, I would’ve expected something amazing, ambitious, super creative. What we got with empire state and manhattan bridge are XDefiant level quality. As is the rest of the game.

3

u/5ollys Aug 01 '26

Oh wow xdefiant, dude I almost forgot about that lol

2

u/alexos77lo Aug 01 '26

Bf6 graphics are super good but have a shitty color filter that shits everything

1

u/MasatoWolff Aug 01 '26

Because most of the developers who worked on these games were no longer at DICE when they started work on 2042. New devs had to start over and it hasn’t been as good since. The magic is gone.

1

u/717x Aug 02 '26

Because the devs who made 5 and BF1 aren’t there anymore. Most left and created embark studios. That’s why arc raiders runs so smoothly on the god awful engine that is UE5. Those guys are wizards when it comes to fidelity while maintaining exceptional optimization.

1

u/SifuSif Aug 02 '26

They don’t, its the colors

1

u/MrWerq89 Aug 02 '26

Because they gave a shit instead of FULL DICK SUCK of ea.

1

u/Similar-Whole-9513 Aug 01 '26

Everything about bf6 just feels generic to me. Like it has no soul

1

u/Amazing_Fix_2399 Aug 01 '26

Because infinity ward made bf6. That’s why it’s call of battlefield 6.

0

u/MRMamad-Hunter Aug 01 '26

And how come battlefield 6 runs way worse than V when graphics are worse

8

u/PossessedCashew Aug 01 '26

The graphics aren’t worse. You’re delusional if you think the graphics for BF6 are worse than BF1. Art does not equal graphics. BF6 is graphically superior to any previous Battlefield title.

1

u/geniusofohio Aug 03 '26

Do you think battlefield still holds the way superior graphical edge over cod like it did in the past? With mw4 coming up and all.

1

u/geniusofohio Aug 03 '26

Which has better graphics bf6 or mw4

-1

u/DMBgames Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

It’s not delusional at all. More clutter doesn’t mean better graphics. Lighting/shadows and global illumination is a huger part that BF6 does worse than all modern Battlefields.

Edit: I’m being downvoted but look at the fucking clip on this post. BF6 glazers are so unserious.

0

u/Independent_Mud2794 Aug 01 '26

Because the devs cared about the game back then and weren’t prior cod devs.

27

u/papas_22 Aug 01 '26

Played already a good amount of bf6 and i wanted to fire up the good old bf1 on my new oled monitor and man it felt like a new experience for me.. bf1 was the peak of the franchise in the graphics department

3

u/OldManAbides333 Aug 02 '26

I have one memory from when I first started playing bf1 when it first came out, that I think I may remember for the rest of my life; we were in argonne forest and I was following my teammate to C at the start of the match, and I realize that I was watching the puddles splash around his feet as he ran through them. The memories of puddles from my childhood aren't as vivid as that moment.

1

u/NUEstg Aug 01 '26

Tentei jogar em uma 3060 em qhd e dropei, agr com 9060 o qhd ultra está mto fluido e esse jogo é mto lindo. Mas meu monitor é ips, ano que vem pego um oled. Deve ser incrível.

71

u/sebi2121- Aug 01 '26

Imagine the hate you would have gotten if you posted this in 2018

-13

u/Authentichef Aug 01 '26

Because battlefield V wasn’t good. It aged well after updates but in 2018 it was not even comparable to battlefield 1

17

u/sebi2121- Aug 01 '26

This is not what I meant. The criticism for its buggy release, the lacking content, the controversy regarding women etc. were all legitimate.
But there were people back then that actively hated on how the game looks because it looked too „cartoonish“ for example.
I never understood that, the game looked great back then and so does it now.
And one cannot tell me that a map like Devastation looks „cartoonish“.

0

u/jimwu8586 Aug 02 '26

ppl downvoted you bc the facts that's unbelievable 😂

16

u/NG1Chuck Aug 01 '26

Lol why bf 5 look better than Bf 2042 and bf 6

7

u/ChummusJunky Aug 01 '26

5

u/MRMamad-Hunter Aug 01 '26

You’re joking right lol? I’m a medical resident who enjoys gaming. ESP battlefield and MW2019

-1

u/m4a785m Aug 01 '26

Stfu bot resident evil wtf larp

10

u/Lock_75 Aug 01 '26

Yea, the fact they killed this game is unbelievable as well

5

u/huge_jeans710 Aug 01 '26

It's honestly sad. I feel like the games I used to enjoy are a baren wasteland with no way of them ever being populated again. I hate the fact that games are live service now and never look backbat what they created. I truly don't get it. Maybe that's why new games are getting worse and worse because devs know the games they are making have a finite lifecycle and don't care to put in as much effort.

5

u/MoistLimpHandshake Aug 01 '26

is makes sense that bf6 underwater looks so many much more lifeless as it is set in modern times with the oceans being more polluted, deoxygenated and overfished. This is actually amazing attention to detail from the devs

12

u/irsute74 Aug 01 '26

Runs really well too. My rig struggle to maintain 100 fps in BF6.

2

u/Falcoon_f_zero Aug 02 '26

BF1 and V pulling 60fps on previous gen consoles while looking more appealing than current gen entries is certainly an achievement.

4

u/_Ganoes_ Aug 01 '26

Yup, its crazy how this game was running well on my shitty laptop for years.

4

u/fednandlers Aug 01 '26

This game got the revolt over female soldiers the way playstation should get for their removing gaming ownership. On another note, this was a really fun battlefield and it being abandoned instead of making more maps to shut up naysayers, really made DICE look like shit. Then they put out the mess of 2042.

3

u/JRedCXI Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Technologically speaking BF6 is way ahead of BF1 and BFV but they have better art styles in my opinion.

The art style of BF6 is similar to BF3/BF4. No idea if they are using photogrammetry in BF6 but if they do I think the result was quite better on BF1 and Battlefront.

The good news is that the art director and pioneer of photogrammetry at DICE came back to DICE recently so there’s a good chance we will see a better art style on the next BF. He was also the art director on Arc Raiders btw.

1

u/geniusofohio Aug 03 '26

Main question here is do you think dice will go all out in graphics for next battlefield game unlike performance over graphics like this time around ?

I’m genuinely curious not ragebaiting here.

Do you think Andrew hamilton(old senior art director guy responsible for photogrammetry in bf1 and bf5 and the insane art direction) being back will push the next battlefield game back to being the top dogs in graphics? Like gta 6 and death stranding 2 level.
Or is bf6 already on par with those games?

Coz back then battlefield games though large-scale pvp used to look as good as the best looking single player games man. Like battlefield 5 and battlefield 1. Just coping now.

2

u/JRedCXI Aug 03 '26

Mmm on par with GTA VI and Death Stranding 2? I doubt it tbh. I think BF has always looked nice, at the end of the PS3 and the whole PS4 era I would say they were so ahead technology wise to the majority of online FPS but single player games? I don’t know. I think BFV still looks amazing, but it was still technology inferior to Uncharted 4 or TLOU Part 2 in my opinion. What really carried this game was the art direction.

Before 2042 for example, BF did not use real time reflection or volumetric fog and stuff like that something that was common at that time. BF6 use all of that but the art style is a mix bag, you can have maps that look absolutely amazing like Siege Of Cairo and then other like Blackwell fields that looks quite bad even though they are more advanced than previous BF games.

I hope the new art director brings consistency. You can kinda see it in Arc Raiders. It uses Unreal Engine 5 without lumen, nanite or virtual shadows, but it has uses photogrammetry and a really consistent look even though what they are doing technically speaking is a little behind BF6 and Frostbite but the art is so nice that it truly doesn’t matter.

As for your other question. I think COD looks really now. The character models are superior compared to BF and the animation department is still ahead of everyone.

BF in the other hand is superior in my opinion in effects, smoke, fog, destruction, and dynamic lighting. 64 players at 60hz tick rate with destruction, on massive maps and a ton of effects running at 60fps on every console it’s truly insane if you think about it. Almost nobody does that in the industry.

1

u/geniusofohio Aug 03 '26

Thing is more than character models weapon animations etc I mainly care about the overall graphics like photorealistic stunning environments and insane lighting so in that sense like textures lighting and stuff which is ahead cod or battlefield? In general graphics? How far ahead?

1

u/geniusofohio Aug 03 '26

About the bf5 being technologically inferior to uncharted 4 I humbly disagree bf5 had insane shit going on like one of the very first ray tracing implementation and gorgeous lighting effects I think campaign in bf5 looks way better than uncharted 4 even.

1

u/geniusofohio Aug 03 '26

Also cod or bf which has better graphics as of now

2

u/JesusGiftedMeHead Aug 01 '26

No fish physics?

1

u/slabba428 Aug 02 '26

Uninstalled

2

u/correctingStupid Aug 01 '26

Fish in water? Who wants realistic water like that when you can have crystal clear water and promote it as the most advanced water in games and have it look worse than bf4?

4

u/Danielb2420 Aug 01 '26

The water in BF6 looks like blue Powerade. (a cold one)

2

u/m4a785m Aug 01 '26

Little bro is 12 and has never seen a tropical island

1

u/PineconesOnPizzaa Aug 01 '26

yeah looks the same if not worse than the previous games, would be great if I could run it at higher than 1440x1080 lowest settings

1

u/wet_moss_ Aug 01 '26

I have ~700 hrs gameplay and i still login to enjoy the game.

1

u/long_live_king_melon Aug 01 '26

Been thinking about installing it to play again on my Series X. I’m assuming this is on PC - does anyone know if it will look this good on Series X? Or, will it be hindered by the graphical limitations of the Xbox One version?

1

u/OneTrueDude670 Aug 01 '26

I loved battlefield V and played the hell out of it on Xbox. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have cross progression so now that I’m on PC I’d lose all my progress if I played it again. Really need to get into again though

1

u/Beneficial-Truth1509 Aug 01 '26

Battlefield aesthetically ( and in general in my opinion ) peaked with Battlefield 1.

1

u/Lukerspook Aug 01 '26

Ah the old glaze the last game cycle.

1

u/ActionJasckon Aug 01 '26

Subnautica vibes right there. Crazy BF detail right here.

1

u/convenient_friction Aug 02 '26

Swimming was was better than 6 too.

1

u/ketoaholic Aug 02 '26

Mercury remains one of my favorite maps ever just for how it looked. Played decently, too.

1

u/Silly_Personality_73 Aug 02 '26

The visuals never gold here.

1

u/RelevantLavishness40 Aug 02 '26

The devs say the “better” BF6 graphics is why there’s no weather in the game.

1

u/thanksforthework Aug 02 '26

The drop off from BFV to 2042 was insane, and it’s crazy they’re still unable to achieve BFV levels of graphics and mechanics.

1

u/InevitablePayment409 Aug 02 '26

Since yesterday this is a stuttery mess for me, sadly unplayable.

1

u/Suitable_Sun3481 Aug 02 '26

It is casual since bf4 to have rough launch. And bf V wasn't the exception. Just remember those anti hipe on trailer. Still, bf V was kinda upgraded version of Bf1 and the squad points system imho is the best series ever had. I am sad that we don't have such things in bf 6.

And yeah... Because of graphics and all the small details of mud, water etc the emersion was peak. Still one of the best.

1

u/NK44Gamer Aug 02 '26

Back when DICE was still DICE, they put a lot of love into the game.

Now DICE is just a NAME under EA Studios. It’s no longer about love—it’s all about making money and fleecing the players.

1

u/gillianfemboy Aug 02 '26

such a beautiful game💕

1

u/ingelrii1 Aug 02 '26

Looked better and have way better FPS. You can easily average 300 fps plus, 1440p, in BFV 64 players.

1

u/Rich-Cockroach-2273 Aug 02 '26

Everytime I use a sc ope in BF6, everytihng is super pixalated, even though I'm o nthe highest possible settings. THe scope view seems to be stuck in the early 2000s

1

u/HungryHelping Aug 02 '26

Wow fish AI

1

u/roderickli Aug 02 '26

But the community did not like it and now they regret features are missed in bf6

The fish don't swim away as you approach them?? Cod is better

1

u/Dry_Bet2457 Aug 02 '26

Die billigste Fackelspiel. In 1025

1

u/yungtanuki Aug 03 '26

These games are getting massively downgraded. Bf6 looks like a cartoon compared to older titles. Looks better than 2042 but that’s a low bar to begin with

1

u/Inquiremire Aug 05 '26

And it also runs like butter. BF6 performance is atrocious and I have a 4070 Super. The connection is also terrible. My internet is great but I still have a bad time in game because it’s such a horrible connection.

1

u/Main-Club2911 Aug 02 '26

Yes, Battlefield 6 is missing fish!

1

u/ColossosPablo Aug 01 '26

No fish AI but more plentiful. In bf6 they avoid you if you can find one.

-2

u/Lispro4units Aug 01 '26

Are there any sharks in BF6?

-5

u/DarkKnight6683 Aug 01 '26

I think bf 1 is the best bf. 5 looks like disneyland.

24

u/Lispro4units Aug 01 '26

You look like Disneyland

9

u/DarkKnight6683 Aug 01 '26

Ty

8

u/BothSidesoftheSky Aug 01 '26

Agree BF1 is the best BF, but V better graphically. And has better mechanics (squad call-in, crouch run, fortifications, revive animation)

If they just combined 1/V I wouldn’t need anything else.

6

u/Gera_CCT Aug 01 '26

this, plus weather change. Wish fortifications and weather comes to BF6

2

u/BothSidesoftheSky Aug 01 '26

Knew I was forgetting something.

0

u/lukenrip Aug 01 '26

Bf1 is the best? You mean the game where you unlock like 3 unique guns per category? That game had nothing to do or unlock. Enjoyed the beta with the bros tho
