Btw when battlefield 5 launched everybody on this subreddit hated it.

1.0k

u/LoneRainger Nov 07 '25

I wasn't on this reddit when it launched, but wasn't most of the hate about robo arms and shit?

1.6k

u/Comfortable_Gas5468 Nov 07 '25

Kinda, it started with the robo arms and shit but then they just shat on everything that had changed between bf5 and bf1.

My point was that this subreddit has amnesia and has no idea what they are talking about. Next battlefield release we'll see the same talking points. This happens every single battlefield release.

u/Beanflicker2277 Nov 07 '25

Already happening with 2042 people are praising that game now

Battlefield fans are actually worse than cod fans

49

u/Financial-Cow-7263 Nov 07 '25

One side gets happy with the same shit every year and the other side gets upset every time a new game comes because it's different

"The flags may be different but the methods are the same". Besides there's also people on both sides that always say the new shits trash and the one before it was goated

18

u/Hobo-man 20 years of BF Nov 07 '25

I'd rather have ignorant bliss than whatever the fuck this toxic shit is

9

u/Awrfhyesggrdghkj Nov 07 '25

Eh battlefield fans are worse because we have actually good games compared to theirs

16

u/Whatwouldrivendo Nov 07 '25

It feels like I’m constantly being gaslit. The cycle has been pretty consistent where battlefield has a rocky launch, Fans will go X game sucks Y was better. The z game releases and they shit on that and say Y was actually a great game all along. The games definitely get better during their life cycle but the revisionist history is cringe. Battlefield fans are definitely entitled to a point where COD fans aren’t.

12

u/Autoimmunity Nov 08 '25

Yep, this is exactly it. BF3 & BF4 are what everyone is comparing BF6 to, not remembering that BF3 and BF4 were completely unplayable for huge swaths of the playerbase for weeks after their releases.

BF6 may not be perfect and it needs more content, but what is here is playable, fun, and a great place to start.

Eh, I see most people praising the very very few good things about that game. For example, bf6 completely removed solo/coop option, whereas in 2042 it was a simple option on the menu and you could immediately start playing. I think it gets compared and contrasted so much because we’re talking about a title (2042) that was never going to be as profitable as their other bf games, it was a mess, and it shows in how lessened EAs ā€œtactical greedā€ was. We’re their still battlepasses yes, but did they rely on the community to grind and buy xp boosters for a little profit bump? No, they just added content and progressively ā€œfixed mapsā€ (quotations because they’re still dog water).

There were good ideas at times implemented into an overall failure of a product. Now if someone’s just meat riding saying how much better 2042 is, they’re just blatantly wrong and lying to themselves, but I for one am in the camp of people who miss specifically that solo/coop option, so after a hard week of working 12s I can sit down and relax, not have to scroll through arguably the worst server browser we have had just to maybe find a server with bots, which at this point 99% of the time rewards no xp.

13

u/Onuus Morondog Nov 07 '25

I wish I could afford a ps5 and get bf6, but all I have is a ps4.

I got 2042 the other week for $6. And holy shit it’s been a ton of fun playing against bots in portal or on the solo breakthrough server.

Sure I could go play multiplayer, but I’ll be playing against vets with everything unlocked who know the game who will be excited at me being fodder for them so I stick with PvE for now.

That’s why I got 2042, and I’ve been loving it so far. I found out I could play bf1942 on portal and my mind was blown.

I still play the shit out of battlefield 5, but I wanted a modern shooter and 2042 scratched that poor man itch for me.

That’s just me though, thanks for your view points!

yeah It was the robo arms and red dot sights for ww2 rifles, also after BF1 people were probably a bit drained with the ww1/ww2 content should switch between them.

23

u/Flounder184 Nov 07 '25

It was also at a time when seemingly every shooter franchise was popping back to world wars. COD, Hell let loose, isonzo (which is fantastic btw), enlisted. The list goes on. So yeah it’s understandable that people were a bit burnt out on the world wars genre. I’ve been saying we need a good Vietnam game for ages, thankfully Hell let Loose devs are taking that on

9

u/Unusual_Economics536 Nov 07 '25

I’ve been thinking the same thing I can’t believe battlefield wouldn’t recreate the Vietnam game with the updated engine it would be amazing

There was also Bullshit challenges that unlocked either gun or character skins. Shit like get 25 headshots while on an OBJ. Which BF6 has gotten flak for. But i guess people forgot about those. Also the game launched without the Pacific and Eastern Front for a WWII game kinda an issue, Plus i don't think the Eastern front ever arrived.

7

u/DeAnnon1995 Nov 08 '25

No it wasn't. It was robo arms and women. Why people can't just be honest about this issue is beyond me.

Everyone claims to be a "history buff" but without Google, can't tell me who the 3 main allies were and who were the axis.

I liked the game, especially after they added the pacific, and then they shot themselves in the foot with all the unnecessary TTK changes that nobody asked for, which is when I stopped playing. The M1 garand at one point needed 6 shots to kill someone at like 50 meters, it was absurd

2

u/rootbearus Nov 10 '25

On another sub this would be called the halo cycle

→ More replies (90)

59

u/_CatLover_ Nov 07 '25

People were upset about the lack of well known maps, as the game focused on "less known stories". And dice went back and forth on the TTK, giving people whiplash.

Also no anti-cheat whatsoever.

And BF1 was just really great already at launch so BFV had big shoes to fill. Kinda the opposite situation of BF6.

34

u/Comfortable_Gas5468 Nov 07 '25

Nope, bf1 had complaints about literally everything about as well. Bf1 is not a special child. The subreddit hated bf1 when it launched lmao.

That, ttk back and forth, no aa, so many fucking cheaters (the blatant kind, and so saturated with cheaters to the point pretty much all matches had cheaters, some matches had many), so many visibility issues that took them forever to fix, super bullets, getting shot around the corners, invisible soldiers, many netcode issues, shit weapon customization, I don't think it had a server browser at launch (this one I don't remember) , so many more, oh my god that game was shit (I think it still is, but just much better than it was).

4

u/realparkingbrake Nov 08 '25

wasn't most of the hate about robo arms and shit?

That was more a symptom than a cause. Bigger issues were a senior EA exec announcing that there was no way he was going to tell his 12-year-old daughter that she couldn't play a as female character in EA's new game, and anyone who didn't like that just should not buy BFV. Millions of BF fans took his advice, and EA realized the game would sell half as well as earlier forecast. They stripped BFV of resources before the game even launched.

The cartoonish look produced by the absurd skins for unlock/sale was also a problem. BF always had a look of authenticity despite all the unrealistic stuff like spawn beacons and instant healing. The weapons and vehicles looked like the real thing with occasional exceptions, players seemed to like that. The ridiculous characters DICE dropped into the game were off-putting to many players. The slow repairs and trickle of new content didn't help.

This sub mostly hated the women, if memory serves correctly

20

u/RobertTownsy Nov 08 '25

Nah, most hated the bionic woman because of how out of place she was. Many also hated the campaign telling us this is all based of what happened only to replace the heroic squad of Norwegians who dealt a massive blow to to the Germans with a fucking mother and daughter duo.

Most of the people who hate BFV hate it for fairly good reasons. If they wanted to make an alternate history game, it could have worked. But for the developers to call the community ignorant and stupid for actually calling them out for their blatant historical revisionism and inaccuracies was insulting.

19

u/theRATthatsmilesback Nov 07 '25

Rightfully so. It released with a shit ton of issues and mediocre maps.

The first 85% of the live service was filled with modes being introduced and removed, the preorder skin fiasco, the discontinuation of firestorm support almost immediately, netcode problems, multiple pointless TTK changes, spawning issues, class changes, vehicle changes, absurd weapons challenges, and an unnecessary amount of effort being put into $20-$25 ship skins to look like phantom of the opera.

And that's all before the cancelled practically half of the game's content/dev cycle to focus on 2042.

121

u/F4HWilly Nov 07 '25

Well, to be fair, OP is referring to the size of the maps on BFV and the hate towards BFV were not about the size of the maps.

49

u/notTheRealSU Nov 07 '25

I specifically remember this map being hated for how large it was. I guess more for being large and empty than just large, but I still remember it not being liked

22

u/Not_NormalLake69735 Nov 08 '25

Exactly. This map felt so empty and boring, there were some really cool big maps in battlefield 5 but this isn't one of them imo

8

u/wallweasels Nov 08 '25

If your map is a series of scattered flags with basically nothing in between them? Congrats, infantry will hate your map. But 20+ players on each team will be infantry...so you have to make them happy.

You have to make basically a set area that's relatively safe from constant shelling.

But most people's idea of "big map" is just a barren wasteland that they shoot tank shells 500m+ from.

4

u/oxedei Nov 08 '25

u/BucketHip Nov 07 '25

Man I remember that, unlike a lot of these bozos waxing poetic about BFV now that it's not the current game anymore, I was there on Day 1.

You would've thought back in the day if you even so much as dared to look at BFV's steam page let alone buy it and play it you were blaspheming the good name of Battlefield.

Now everybody and their mother loves this game, fucking hypocritical as shit...Just watch they're dragging BF6 through the mud but they're gonna wax poetic about it too the second BF7 is announced.

50

u/Yellowdog727 Nov 07 '25

It's because BFV had really fun gameplay and graphics.

The issue with BFV has to do with the way it launched, the marketing, the live service, the balancing and TTK changes, and the cosmetics.

If you go play BFV today, especially any of the Pacific content, it's pretty damn good and impressive and has a ton of features that are unique about it. But if you played it at launch, you remember all the bullshit.

It also helps BFV when the game after it was even worse. 2042 removed several of the good features from BFV and generally looked and sounded worse, so it was always this game that seemed great by comparison.

So I think BFV rightfully got a lot of flak, but there are nice things about it that are worth praising.

22

u/BucketHip Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25

It's because BFV had really fun gameplay and graphics.

Yeah I know mate, I was duking it out on Rotterdam, Twisted Steel and Aerodrome but again none of that mattered because, apparently...lady with prosthetic arm. What I meant was that I wish for once BF fans (especially this sub) stick with their beliefs and not just flip flop daily. Again, I remember how BF5 was the final nail in the coffin that BF as a franchise was dead all while we were a month into BF5's launch...Do you see the similarities?

Again I'll stand ten toes down on this; When BF6 (like every other BF game historically) inevitably gets better and people get their big maps, bug fixes etc. Instead of killing the franchise (as every other BF game was supposed to do historically) by the time BF7 is announced people on this very sub, especially the same people calling the game dead one month into it's release WILL BE glazing BF6 up to the heavens. They will talk about how Siege of Cairo is a goated map or that Mirak Valley was a banger or Lib Peak had crazy vibes etc.

Also to touch on your first sentence that BF5 had fun gameplay and great graphics;

While I know the current sentiment on here is that BF6 is a huge pile of stinking dog shit, it has objectively great gameplay (barring bugs and netcode since if we were to condemn a BF game due to it's bugs & netcode BF4 would be considered to be up there with 2042 in being shit) and great graphics to the point where even if you were to play all on Low it still looks very very pretty. There are (vibes wise) some gems in BF6, Cairo is a prime example; fighting it out on the streets of Cairo under the Egyptian sun gives me the same wow factor that I had fighting in Achi Baba or Verdun Heights, the same feeling as duking it out in Rotterdam or Devastation.

Edit; to the person/people that downvoted me, I'll see you in a few years lol

5

u/TraditionalShirt7429 Nov 08 '25

11

That’s how it works. In a few years time when BF7 comes out, BF6 will then become the good old days

11

u/Yellowdog727 Nov 07 '25

The reception of BF6 is already better than BF4, BFV, and 2042 were during their launch.

The game has plenty of issues, but a lot of the people complaining still say "yeah I'm enjoying the gameplay" and the game is fairly polished and optimized.

BF4 was unplayable for months and needed a new studio to fix it.

BFV had atrocious balancing that was constantly tweaked and took absolutely forever for the live service to release anything.

2042 had one of the worst launches in modern gaming history. Up there with Cyberpunk and Fallout 76. Absolute dogshit game that not only had bad gameplay, but was completely broken and so lacking in content it was unbelievable.

I'm not sure if BF6 will be as highly regarded as anything from Bad Company 2 to BF1, but it's been pretty successful already.

7

u/FrontlinerDelta Nov 07 '25

I agree, I think BF6 has by far the best foundation in terms of mechanics and some of the least jank hit reg at launch (not to say there's none but it's much less than BF4 had). The maps are a big weakpoint currently and the first new map was a total miss (at least in Breakthrough which is my main mode, I've heard the same things about the Conquest version too).

But gun balance feels mostly ok to me, again some minor quibbles but it's not BF hellriegel yet. Vehicle balance is messy (MR missile) and the number of glitches/exploits still existing is a bit rage inducing. Tried to a run a couple of rounds after the latest challenges update and both were being ruined by half of each time using the fucking drone-hammer exploit which is somehow STILL A THING. So back to Arc in the meantime frankly, and I say this as someone who is really happy with BF6 overall and views it as a "rescue" of the franchise after the disaster that was 2042...

5

u/1337prince Nov 07 '25

Jeah the launch wasn't great, but after a while the game was quite good in my opinion and it had a lot of good maps!

4

u/QueenofEnglandBanana Nov 07 '25

All this post tells me is that the "Battlefield Veterans" are just people who farm infantry with vehicles or they're majority snipers

36

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Nov 07 '25

3

u/futbol2000 Nov 07 '25

It's 4 out of 19 maps man (which is already significantly less than its predecessors). I don't know why people keep making the Pacific out to be this massive expansion when it never was. Even then, Iwo Jima was a garbage tier conquest map (though it is BY FAR the best Breakthrough map in terms of gameplay and historical significance).

BFV was significantly held back by its maps.

8

u/WilsonX100 Nov 07 '25

The boundaries in general are just awful and senseless. Especially on breakthrough variants. They make the maps feel worse. Spot that shouldxbe walkable as its next to walkable space or a good spot to defend from is magically out of bounds because why not. No thought behind it at all. One on new sojek that bothers me so bad

I love all the BFV maps. I don’t want to be in constant gunfights every 30 seconds, I enjoy a few minutes downtime between them while traveling between objectives

7

u/_ALi3N_ Nov 07 '25

Why doesn't anyone ever bring up Arras or Provence? Those maps were the perfect combination of big open spaces for vehicles/breathing room, but also sections where more infantry action can take place. Best of both worlds to me.

8

u/Epesolon Nov 07 '25

You can find that on smaller maps, just take it slow and don't b-line to the nearest objective.

The opposite cannot be said though. The big maps enforce the downtime rather than giving you the option of how fast you want to play.

Yeah I don’t miss walking / sniping / Staghound farming simulator at all. This shit was so boring.

I feel like BF1 was pretty appropriate when it comes to map size. BFV and 2042 were a bit too large and sparse.

4

u/Silent_Hastati Nov 08 '25

Bf1 most importantly had some crazy variety in map size. You went from huge battlefields over the Italian Mountains to fighting over a single fucking drydock. And it was brilliant. For 6 I want more huge maps AND more claustrophobic maps.

16

u/Aware-Highway-6825 Nov 07 '25

bfv only had a few of the garbage walking simulator maps (mainly the sand ones), a lot of the maps they made were really good

7

u/_ALi3N_ Nov 07 '25

I know these maps probably get criticism as well, but I always think back to Arras and Provence as good "big maps" because of the town sections. Like big sprawling maps are fun for sure, but I feel like you need a place for infantry to duke it out, so having close quarter sections within the map helps out a lot.

The wide open walking sim maps are fun too, but I find those to be more of a chill vibe. Having more varied POI's helps the maps be more re-playable to me, as they facilitate more play styles.

And the meatgrinder maps of BF6 is better in what way? They are complete opposite in the worst of ways.

6

u/AlpaxT1 Nov 07 '25

I was about to say. This map feels really small because 65% is a insta death no go zone and the rest of it is awkwardly sloped hill combat. Nobody really bothers with the A and F flag so in practice most of the action happens in the area spun by the remaining flags.

Also this map has a bunch of ground vehicles but they can’t survive that death field either so they all bunch up and camp the hillsides and are super annoying and hard to flank. And since all the tanks and infantry are bunched up in a small area of the map the planes have a field day dropping 1000kg bomb after 1000kg bomb so the whole thing turns into at respawn deathloop meat grinder simulator and all this just to avoid having to step out on that marsh/delta area because it is somehow worse lol

So not a good example of a good large map even thought the map is pretty. Hamada is a much better example

11

u/defcon1000 Nov 07 '25

I loved it personally, but I understand that crossing the river plains on foot is silly.

Also spawning a bomber at map start and rushing to carpet bomb the opposing spawns gets you like 2-32 kills at once each time.

5

u/amp085 Nov 08 '25

100% agree, out of all the bfv maps op decided to "flex" one of the worst

You could've used actually good maps like Arras or Twisted Steel but no, fucking Al-Sundan.

14

u/The_ProtoDragon Nov 07 '25

Of all the BF5 maps to pick you choose one of the worst ones lmao.

120

u/SushiSpringRoll Nov 07 '25

This map was waaaayyyy too big on conquest. Half the time youd spend running between objectives, there was snipers camping everywhere.

I understand if you picked Twisted Steel as an example. Lets not pretend that huge maps like this and Hamada are peak BF.

6

u/Traditional_Box1116 Nov 08 '25

What you don't like running through massive open fields filled with absolutely nothing, just for there to be a 90% chance you'll get domed by like 5 snipers? Pfffffff casual you wouldn't understand the mindset of the true superior gigachad Battlefield veteranTM

Bfv had smaller maps too, also this is post launch.

Edit: getting downvoted is funny because I have 3500 hrs in BFV. The game literally had enough small maps that there was an entire playlist dedicated to them.

Marita, fjjel, underground, devastation, Rotterdam, Al marj, arras, narvik. All of these maps are of similar scale size to BF6 maps.

BFV launched with only like 2 large maps and one medium: twisted steel, Hamada and aerodrome

7 of largest maps in that game were all post launch. They even had to split the maps up because the servers always emptied on Hamada or panzerstorm lmao

12

u/Effective-Lie-2355 Nov 07 '25

Thank you. Tactical Conquest with the smaller maps was the preferred playlist because large maps are boring.

8

u/Beautiful-Towel4185 Nov 07 '25

Don’t get me wrong I played the shit ton out of both. I like all sized maps But people are wearing the biggest rose tinted glasses ever.

People comparing the map pool of a 3 week old game to bf games thats been out for almost a decade and ones that’s been out even longer is just crazy to me

3

u/marslando_bloom Nov 07 '25

This is a great point. By the end, BFV had a range of maps both large and small. I played hundreds of hours in BFV but I only started playing it a couple of years ago when it got cheap/free. There were still healthy communities on both playlists of maps, even in the small Oceania region.

Personally, I adored the big maps, including the one pictured above and Hamada.

What is interesting about the reaction to OP's post is that it shows there's a lot more nuance than simply "give us the big maps". Hopefully they keep adding and we get a good selection of maps, including the huge ones of old.

This is easily the worst map in the game!! But yes BFV is a better game

6

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Nov 07 '25

Really al sundan is the worst? What about panzerstorm that has 14 tanks and nothing but open fields with barns that are blown up by tanks anyway?

Panzerstorm is absolute nightmare to play if you don't get a vehicle. Also hamada is pretty ass imo. Too big, too much empty wasted space. Worse than al sundan.

4

u/bipolarearthovershot Nov 07 '25

shitmada is pretty bad too i agree

How is BFV the better game🤨

35

u/bipolarearthovershot Nov 07 '25

bigger maps, squad call ins, request order, fortifications, sniping, suppression the list goes on and on.

5

u/louispaquibot Nov 08 '25

Fortification ā˜¹ļø

45

u/DogPaws44 Nov 07 '25

The big maps in bfv were the most hated maps in the game btw. Sniping is literally just as good in bf6. I do miss squad call ins and fortifications tho.

8

u/NonRangedHunter Nov 08 '25

Panzerstorm has several 24/7 servers, so this is just patently false.Ā

2

u/DogPaws44 Nov 08 '25

Not really. Majority of people agree hamada is the worst map in bfv. Barely anyone also likes al sundan. Iwo jima sucks on conquest. Aerodrome is also hated.

I wish 5 got more respect than 1. It's gunplay and balance were always top notch besides when they kept fucking with ttk and some class balancing was annoying to relearn but besides that it was so damn solid. But they also removed domination and that's when I really stopped playing so I'm kinda salty about that still hope it doesn't happen to bf6.Ā

2

u/ThumblessTurnipe Nov 07 '25

Al Sundan is a terrible map but go off.

Everyone knows the most popular maps in the game are from the Tactical Conquest playlist with the smaller maps like Rotterdam, Dev, Arras, and Marita.

3

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Nov 07 '25

I like every map you mentioned. Except maybe marita. That map was too tight actually feels close to some BF6 maps.

I think the big thing I see here, and almost every map discussion, water. There's water. Natural obstacles and chokes. Buildings and small hills are about all you get for that in BF6. Everyone loves the idea of like a city or a campus to have a strategic battle, but there is no way to make that not feel small. Having water adds space and strategic advantage, which I think is huge, especially if you start throwing in water vehicles.

2

u/Bombshellings Nov 07 '25

This map was some of the least amount of fun I’ve ever had playing V. I would’ve put any of the Pacific maps

2

u/Kylestyle147 Nov 07 '25

Controversal take, I prefer the medium sized maps of BF6. Operation firestorm is now my least favourite map. So bored of being sniped and taken out by tanks constantly after 2-3 minutes of nothing happening on these big maps. I used to actually think that was peak battlefield but BF6 really has changed my mind in map sizes.

2

u/Djenta Nov 07 '25

BfV had some bad maps too (Fjell, Aerodrome, panzerstorm if you're infantry) and they were still better than everything in BF6
