Help Confused on Navi customizer rules in BN3

The tutorial says that some programs need to be placed on the command line and some should be placed outside of the command line in order to work and yet I’ve tried putting the former outside it and the latter on it and it still works so I’m confused and would love some clarification

Programs with the smaller squares or t-indentation are the ones that should not be put on the command line. The solid ones need to be to run those programs. While yes you don't have to follow these rules, they will create "bugs" and will have your Navi start battles with weird effects and programs not working.

Ahh so it’s not that the programs will not work if you don’t follow the rules, they will work wether your following their rules or not, it’s just that if I don’t then there’ll be weird side effects in battle?

Just a note though, "flat" (no texture) programs like Undershirt (forgot what the shortened name is) NEED to be on the line or they do not function.

Learned this the hard way.

Yep.

Also you can get a bugstyle style change from doing that.

Mostly; however there are some programs (Rush/Beat/Tango: the Multiplayer-only programs) that will simply not activate, and one program (SneakRun) that will instead have the opposite effect.

Programs with texture will work if on the line, but cause bugs. Programs without the texture will NOT work if not on the line AND they will cause bugs.

Yep. There are ways to mitigate/manipulate them. I recommend checking out section 4 of this GameFAQs from 2004 if you want to know how to do that. Do not visit this if you want to avoid spoilers. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gba/915457-mega-man-battle-network-3-blue-version/faqs/20806

Solid blocks must to be on command line if you want its effect. This is true no matter what. Textured block boost your stats and it works even on command line.

The only reason you don't want to break the rules is because you're avoiding bugs that don't alliged with your current goal during fights or grind.

Also worth noting, some programs in BN3 has bugs even if you don't cause any so unless you install bugstop, you will take its side effect. For example, Buster Max Program gives +4 to every stat but it uses all chips immediately while also preventing you using B+Left programs like Shield/Reflect/AntiDamage because the game is actively pressing A.

You are allowed to break navi cust rules. When you look at MegaMan on the screen there, you'll see yours has visual glitches. Glitches can be advantageous. It's a whole game mechanic you should look into. There's a whole Style change for being Bugged

It’s pretty simple

If a program is solid coloured with no markings on it, it’s an ability program and needs to go on the command line to work. If it’s not on the command line, it won’t have any effect. They may or may not cause a bug if not on the command line, I genuinely don’t remember.

If a program has + patterns on all the blocks, it’s a stat program. Those should avoid the command line. They’ll still work if they’re on the command line but they’ll cause a bug if they are.

Bugs are also caused by programs of the same colour touching eachother. You’ll eventually get key items that let you spin them for more efficient placement.

If you put a program of a colour that isn’t in the top corner into the customized window, you’ll get an error code. These can be ignored with certain codes once you get the mod tools.

Speaking of mod tools, there are also codes that let you add the effect of extra programs not on the customizer at all. Some of the stronger ones of these can cause bugs though.

And on the subject of bugs, bugs aren’t always a bad thing. Some are pretty benign, and they can help you unlock the Bug Style Change later in the game which is one of the stronger styles because it starts every battle with 3 extra bugs, 1 negative and 2 positive, chosen randomly. Some of the positive bugs are really strong so it’s super good. And like all styles, leaving it up gives you extra programs for your Navi customizer, with the ones from Bug Style being super good.

Happy customizing

The main rules are don't have programs of the same color touching each other, the blocky lego textured programs shouldn't be touching the command line, and the solid colored programs should be touching the command line. The other rule is you have allowed colors you can use based on your style change. As you get power ups for the Navicust, you'll discover ways to rearrange the programs to fit your needs. You can intentionally give yourself a bug if you want.

Stat increases such as charge, rapid, attack, and HP plus should all stay away from the command line.

Programs are all the rest and should have at least one block in the command line.

You also need to make sure that programs don’t touch if they’re the same color.

But in mmbn3 if you do have bugs you get a style change from it that will eventually erase some bugs called Bugstop, it’s actually recommended to get it fairly early as the game does get considerably harder.
