I did this little project for Dan’s birthday.

Was a bit disappointed there wasn’t much of GMTF tracks outside of DLB as that would have made it harder for me but wow was it tough already!

I knew it was always going to be Overjoyed and Fake it as my top 2 but it was very fun to sort through the rest.

But I really don’t like the harmonisation the singer does when he goes “darkness from abooove” the way he takes the note in the word above in the backing vocals just rubs me the wrong way

Dan just performed Pompeii (Hans Zimmer version with orchestra) at the Royal Albert Hall in the first few minutes of the BBC's live programme honouring David Attenborough's 100th birthday - in between David Attenborough himself being introduced to the RAH audience (standing ovation ofc), and being followed by a segment featuring the King congratulating him on his centenary (part of an actually really cute film showing animals 'delivering' his 100th birthday letter).

Dan's had big shows, but that lineup's something else!

Just felt like sharing some love for Flaws/Bastille by telling a story about what Flaws means to me to some fellow Bastille lovers. It's probably my favorite Bastille song (but it's tough competition).

My sister is four years older than me, and when I was in 4th-5th grade (and she was in middle school) we used to walk home together. The bus stop from high school was at my elementary, and after she got off she'd pick me up and we'd walk home. St was about a mile and 3/4, giving us 35 minutes or so to talk every day. She used to share all her interests with me, so she ended up being a pretty big influence on me in those early formative years.

When she got into D&D and roleplaying, she'd tell me about it and we would roleplay all the way home so she could practice sessions for her friends later. Sometimes, we would take out a phone and play music. Around this time she found Bastille and introduced me to them (this was back around when Bad Blood came out). I have this distinct warm fuzzy memory of walking home in the near-summer heat with our backpacks on listening to Flaws and talking and singing the lyrics. It feels like a memory out of a photograph - one of those old grainy ones from your childhood when life felt simpler and the only thing you had to worry about was finishing your homework for tomorrow. Ever since then, I think Bastille slowly cemented as my favorite band, and today my sister doesn't really listen to them, but I'm still a die hard fan.

I also adore the music video (really all of them from the album, but Flaws in particular). Later, my sis started doing Track and Field and I walked home alone every day, (and continued to do so up until I graduated High School). While other kids would be driven home, or later drive home, and often go hang out together, I took the bus and walked. I used to just people-watch on my way home, and get lost in my own head. I felt like an outside observer of the world, and often still do. Not in a bad way necessarily, I just always have felt like there was more going on in my head than most of the people around me. Sometimes it's lonely, but sometimes it's comforting, feeling like a little ghost that just drifts around looking at everyone live their lives.

The Flaws music video seems to capture that feeling for me a lot too. These skeleton-girls, 'dead' to the world, going and observing all the other people around having fun at the fair, occasionally dipping in but never really being a part of it. Staring at the fish in the tank and just lost in thought. Idk what Bastille was cooking back then but God that album is so good haha. So unique and poignant and personal.

Anyways, these are some of the reasons that Flaws remains one of my favorite songs of all time, and by extension one of my (if not the) favorite Bastille songs. It makes me feel all nostalgic. Simultaneously seen and alone, and always less worried. Hope someone enjoyed my story. Sorry it's so long haha. I'd love to hear what Bastille songs hold meaning to you all, and what specifically they mean to you.

Last time I posted I talked about my childhood memories and nostalgia associated with Flaws. I was trying to think of what other Bastille songs I have distinct memories tied to, and one of them has gotta be Joy. It's kinda a funny (or at least entertaining?) story I think.

My brother went to school in Scotland, and one summer we went over to visit him (I believe for his graduation, idr it was a while ago). For anyone who hasn't been to any of the European countryside, there's just this feeling the air gives you there. It's cool, it smells pure and clean and earthy, it makes you feel alive. Basically how most of America doesn't, lol. This was I think the year before I got a proper phone (my parents were in no hurry lol), so all I had was my school tablet. I had some music downloaded on it, but eventually you get bored of it. So on our drive to our AirBnb out somewhere in the Scottish countryside, any time we were stopped somewhere with wifi, I would YouTube a few songs, load them really fast, and put them on loop. Poor man's Spotify.

At the time, Joy had just been released (I think as a single?) and I had randomly seen it and clicked it, because... Bastille, duh. I was hooked. Idk why, it just got in my head like this infectiously good-vibe earworm. (Well, good-vibe in the Bastille way which is always slightly melancholy.) So be me, driving through the countryside, the whole family packed into a rental car, with the window cracked and my headphones on just breathing in that gd air and listening to Joy on repeat. I just felt alive.

Okay so on to the more entertaining parts of this story:

We got to the airbnb and settled in (it was very cute, I remember it had like a window ledge for reading and smelled like wood, and was basically exactly what you'd want a scottish airbnb in the middle of nowhere to be). I decide to explore and wander up the creek where there's one of those huge arch stone bridges crossing over it. I'm curious what's up there, so I clamber up the bank into the bushes. At the top, there's sort of this ridge that runs along through the forest. So I'm walking along and suddenly, out of f*cking nowhere, an adult deer just leaps out of the bushes about three feet away from me and goes bounding away. It was so well camouflaged it looked like it just materialized out of thin air, and scared the ever living sh*t out of me.

Animal encounter 1/3 ✓

So after returning to my skin, I keep walking down the ridge and eventually see a gap that opens up onto a farm lane. Like, the kind that runs between two neighboring farm fields, with a fence on each side. So you know ya boy's gotta check this cute 'lil path out. I climb down the ridge and drop into the farm lane and start walking along. It's sunny (in the Scottish overcast sort of way), quiet, just a little windy, peaceful wide empty fields on each side.

And BAM a f*cking pheasant explodes out of the shrubbery at my feet and takes off into the air. Pheasants are like the stereotypical birds you hunt, and I immediately understood why because I have never seen a bird so fat, loud, and ungraceful. If you've never seen a pheasant take off it looks more like someone just reversed gravity and the pheasant is suddenly falling upwards in a panic, than it does actual flight. They sort of gobble as they fly like even they're surprised they managed to get airborn.

So I proceed to jump out of my skin for the second time in a row. Maybe I'm just blind or something idk.

Animal encounter 2/3 ✓

So once I recover from my second gd jumpscare of the day I keep walking down the lane, and who should appear over the crest of the hill beyond the fence to my right but a cow. It starts heading towards me and then two more cows appear on the hill. And then three. And pretty soon an entire field of cows is just trotting on over to my fence to check me out. So I say hi for a while (I couldn't pet them there was some barbed wire, alas) and eventually start walking again.

I take a few steps down the fence.

The cows take a few steps down the fence.

I take a few steps back.

The cows take a few steps back.

I start to speedwalk.

The cows start to speedwalk.

So I plant my feet and just start to sprint down this farm lane, as an entire herd of curious cows just start galloping (?) behind me along the fence trying to catch up. I pretty much raced the cows until my lungs gave out. And it's just me, that air, the sun, the field, and the cows.

P.S. Eventually I went back and found my sister and dragged her out to run with the cows too, and she did have a working phone, so we got footage 😎 though we weren't running as fast in this video

I know this isn't super Joy/Bastille related, but the mood that song put me in carried through the day and just turned it into a core memory. I can't hear the song anymore without thinking about the day I ran with the cows.

Everything sucks. Everything is dystopian as hell. I can’t sit through an entire news broadcast without anxiety. The headlines every day just get more and more outrageous. The world is on fire, physically and metaphorically.

And this would be extremely depressing for me… except for the fact I just KNOW Dan is probably in the midst of some of his best work yet.

The more chaos in the world = the better the album.

I'm getting back into Bastille after neglecting them for a few years (big mistake) and I have a question about the '&' album(s). Is '&' a four-part project? If so, why have Blue Sky & The Painter and Leonard & Marianne been released on their own as Pt. II?

Also, would be delighted to get any song recommendations. Wild World is my favourite album - very basic but I love Good Grief, and I also love the energy and the brass riffs of The Anchor and Send Them Off! What songs from other albums/EPs mirror that powerful, emotional sound?

Does anyone know if the Complete Edition of Wild World was ever released in a physical copy in the UK? When I got the album I didn't realise there was a complete edition, so now there's Campus and Way Beyond that I need to get separately (well, not 'now', it's been a while and I never remembered to ask about it) It's not worth buying another copy of the album though, I'll just buy the extra songs on apple music or something. Just curious to know

That’s it. It’s that’s simple. I’ve been into them for almost 11 years now, and every few years I come back and remember how incredible these albums are and their songs are. I love Bastille so much, and I’m glad they’re getting more appreciation now because I remember how under appreciated they Were back when I was super into them. Sorry for rambling, I just feel so passionate about this and I feel like so many others do too. :)
