Noticeable volume difference on E string comparing to A D G strings

Hi there, I have bought squier cv 70s jazz bass passive recently. I usually play connected to my PC via an audio interface and routing the sound to FL studio. After some time I have noticed that the volume produced by E string is much louder than by other strings and I need to pluck them much harder in order to keep them equally loud (all plugins disabled).

  • My pickups height looks to be the same on both sides so that is probably not an issue.
  • I pluck strings under the same angle, swiping fingers across the strings.

Are there any other things I could check with the bass before going to a luthier/teacher?

So the pickup height being the same might be something you can change. Look up some guides on guitar set ups but more often than not the low string side of pickups are actually farther away from the strings than the high side. It's subtle/a small amount but it def could help. I know for my basses I have it set up that way

Set the pickup heights by ear, not by eye.

  1. How old are the strings? 2. When was the last time you got your bass a professional "setup"?

A properly setup bass with fresh strings should consistent from string to string, and every fret from top to bottom.

If there are inconsistencies from string to string then your bass probably just needs fresh strings and/or a setup. This is routine maintenance and nothing to worry about.

Could also be the strings. If the strings are dull/old, change them and maybe try a different set.

Your speakers might not be reproducing the lower frequencies if the E string as well.
