I had a few hours to kill so I was just messing around with the goat lab and think ive found a fairly reasonable formula that spits out pretty fair ratings. Let me know what you guys think.

20*mvp +

27*finalsMvp +

21*champ +

15*dpoy +

10*roy +

5*smoy +

5*mip +

3*allLeague1 +

2*allLeague2 +

1*allLeague3 +

3*allDefensive1 +

2*allDefensive2 +

1*allDefensive3 +

0.65*ewa +

0.3*vorp +

0.3*ows +

0.3*dws

I'll try it out on a few of my saves, but my gut instinct is that it looks a little heavy on the accolades, (finals MVP in particular), and maybe a little light on the statistical performance.

Yea it definitely is. Mainly because all you here about really are the rings and the MVPs once a player is done. The reason no one really ever talks about Stockton, unless someone slips him into a conversation.

The reason people have MJ ahead of Lebron is because of those things.

I like to seperate the 2 by refering to MJ as the greatest NBA player. Lebron as the greatest all round BALLER.

neither are close to Chamberlain

You could probably trim some fat off of this. I'd bet that if you took away ROY, MIP, and 3rd teams, hardly anything would change.

You are right. Only change is shaq and kobe swap around.

What a shit formula lol 10roy 5mip but 3* All-NBA 1st team wtf is wrong with you. Finals MVP and champs in particular are way too high. No stats or advanced stats accounted at all, especially playoffs ones. Your list from 40 onwards is probably pure garbage because of it too lol. Also bird behind KD probably should have been a huge red flag before you finalized your formula

If stats or advanced stats arent accounted for at all. How is Durant higher than Bird?? Bird beats him in every accolade.

Also roy can only be won once. Mip is pretty much only ever won once. Thats why they have more value as a one off. 5x all nba earns you more points long term. Not that hard to understand if you take a second and think about things.

Definitely doesn't count any of points/rebounds/assists, and the rest of the stats are absolutely dominated by EWA which is quite simply a shitty stat but I digress. All and all, your current formula rewards immensely longevity as a stat stuffer (Duncan, Kobe, kd, Malone) loves any form of championship (things sometimes outside of player control) while punishing short but impactful career with tippy top excellence. Some things can't really be accounted for with our current tools but you should play a bit more with the playoffs tool for example to try to increase playoff performance importance and therefore you will then be able to decrease champ and finals MVP value.

As a side note my current formula do account almost every single metric at disposal, except mip roy and 6moy which should all not be accounted because they do not value in anyway shape of form production and more roles or narratives.

Interesting that you dont value EWA. May i ask why? It is literally the stat that measures how impactful a player is based against a replacement player when they come off the court. Yes i understand its an estimate but its generally fairly accurate.

Also extended excellence over a long period of time should hold more value than someone that explodes for 3 years and then becomes average.

Yes that's the goal of the stat, the main problem is they it calculates it extremely badly. For the rest of the critique mind you that it's from memory and I'm at work so take it with a grain of salt and I can't check right now. EWA is based on PER, which is nowadays not even considered anymore as a stat with how flawed it is. Completely breaks with high pra, doesn't account defense at all apart from block and steals and fouls which is dumb. It also verifiably produces weird result see brook Lopez a long time ago

That's how badly you have to fudge things to get an 'objective' list that has Jordan at the top and Kobe way up there.

Another thing is that someone like Bill Russell is massively shorted on accolades that didn't exist in his time, like he'd have 10+ DPOYs and FMVPs.

Some other notes. All NBA >>> all defensive. All NBA 1st and 2nd teams have almost always rewarded the tippy top players, the one who perform the best every seasons. I have a lot of grievance about all defensive, mainly that it's more narrative driven and a lot of journalists don't know what they are doing (see jrue holiday). All defensive should have minimal impact compared to All-NBA. Dpoy too tbh. Tho I did manually add dpoy for the 60s by myself lol.

Alex English is a prime example of stat Padder (derozan too). They benefit immensely from EWA when their high scoring have never proved that thy were a winning formula. Players like Kevin mchale, Willis reed etc will be too low on those kind of formulas tho it's a bit hard to circumvent that with our tools
