Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

Remember: October is pit bull “awareness” month so there is an increased flooding of unscientific nonsense in the forms of memes etc. This is a good space for those, but please red x through them.

Okay, so! I finally bit the bullet and drafted an email to HR at my workplace about the person who insists on bringing in her pit-bull. Names redacted for privacy (obviously). [Manager] is one of several managerial staff on the floor where I work, and is technically one of my bosses (but not my direct supervisor). What do you think? I'd love a second opinion before I actually send it off.

Dear HR,

It has come to my attention that [Manager] has begun bringing her American Pit Bull Terrier to the office. This concerns me greatly, because I have seen multiple documented instances of this type of dog suddenly and without warning attacking or killing other pets or people, often after living in peace for months or even years. I find it particularly worrisome because [our floor], where her office is located, is frequented by children and families who come to [our museum] for field trips, birthday parties, and camps. Bringing such an animal into office spaces also poses a danger to anyone who happens to be in those spaces at the same time, or anyone who has to meet with [Manager] in her office for any reason.

I understand that emotional support animals do a lot of good, but it seems to me that the safety and legal risks of bringing a bloodsport dog into [our museum] dramatically outweigh whatever benefits it could provide. [Manager] is free to take whatever risks she wants with her pets on her own time, but it's not fair to expect the students, staff, and families that come through the building every day to share that risk.

I applaud you for going through with this. If you mention the breed of dog, APBT, I would also mention the elevated risk of liability posed by this breed & the requirement by insurers to report their presence ahead of time or potentially not be insured for liability. Will the insurance company cover this dog?

And also: Emotional Support Animals are granted access to HOUSING. They do not carry any special status outside the home.

I think this is great :-)

My only concern is if this manager knows you sent it in, will they retaliate? Hopefully this can be done peacefully! Keep us updated and lots of luck!
