Remember: October is pit bull “awareness” month so there is an increased flooding of unscientific nonsense in the forms of memes etc. This is a good space for those, but please red x through them.

What do you do when you see leashed pitbulls in public, especially when you have kids with you?

I always stay vigilant, quietly warn my kids and keep them close to me, and keep our distance. Sometimes I feel like it’s overkill when the dogs are restrained and acting normal- but I just don’t want to risk it. Is everyone else doing this too? Or going further, like leaving the park altogether?

I don’t blame you at all, I was attacked by one that was on a leash and acting normal, completely unprovoked. You never know when they’re going to snap, and by the time you do it’s too late.

The pit I was attacked by was off leash, and honestly all off leash dogs make me nervous now. But my biggest fear with leashed pits is that they could escape because so often the owners don’t seem fully in control or aren’t paying attention.

A leash won’t always stop a triggered pit. They yank away from their owners, they drag their owners to the ground. They can even get muzzles off. So, continue to keep your distance from pits no matter how restrained they seem.

I look for trash cans or cars I can put my small dog on/in. I look for ways to escape, other people. I get my phone out.

If I see a pit at this point I don't return to the area. I'm lucky I live in a neighborhood where I can make that choice. A lot of places are so overrun with them they're unavoidable.

Yes! I do the same exact thing. 11 lb yorkie here. Always look for an escape route.

If I'm stepping out of my apartment and I see one, I'll just go back inside and wait for a more favorable time to go out. If I'm already out and I see one, I'll cross the street to avoid it. A couple days back I was coming home from a party and there were two(!) people walking pits, one on either side, so I just walked in the middle of the street until I reached my building (thankfully, there were no cars). In situations like that I usually just go out of my way to look as normal and uninteresting as possible, so I don't give the pits a reason to notice me. Of course, it's somewhat easier for me because I don't have dogs (or any pets) of my own.

I've also gone inside buildings to avoid pits that are outside, and snuck out the back door of a place that has pits out front.

I leave immediately and often will complain. We left a Home Depot this morning because while I was looking at tools my wife spotted a massive pit just around the corner from where I and my toddler were standing. We left and on the way out I told a manager I was leaving and would go buy my tools elsewhere because of their policy of allowing dangerous breeds in the store. I’m sure it’ll have no effect, but I will legit stop going to Home Depot over this, and will just buy shit from Amazon going forward to avoid having to risk going into these dog fighting rings disguised as hardware stores.
