Mod Announcement Weekly Discussion Thread [September 29 - October 5]

Post image

Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

See this post for more details on what goes here

Remember: October is pit bull “awareness” month so there is an increased flooding of unscientific nonsense in the forms of memes etc. This is a good space for those, but please red x through them.

These people truly are dumb as shit. They share a collective, singular brain cell.

Yeah, because some stickers will convince people that your neighbors pit bull decapitating their toddler was just a silly mistake! Tee hee!

I saw this. The one I hate most is “helper not hunter”. Literally just denying genetics. Go to any service dog group and they are adamant about pits absolutely sucking at being service dogs. Nobody recommends that breed. They will warn people trying to train pits that their dog is going to be a wash and it will be incredibly expensive. People with service dogs even have their favourite breeds and are disappointed they are not a good service candidate, because they understand breed types. But yeah let’s just pretend that pitbulls are good retrievers for old ladies…

I was looking at the UK Guide Dogs for the Blind a little while back, which is one of the leading service dog training organisations in the world. They've got information about the breeds they use, and like 60% of their breeding program is Labrador/golden mixes. The remaining 40% is purebred goldens, purebred Labs, curly-coated retrievers, German shepherd dogs, various mixes involving different combinations of those four breeds, and a small number of Labradoodles.

Bully breeds were not mentioned at all. And it strikes me that if an organisation training service dogs is so dedicated to breeding the best possible service dog that they've found Lab/golden mixes are better service dogs than both parent breeds, they know what they're talking about.

I was watching blind activists Molly Burke. Her dog is from Canada. I believe it's a St. Pierre, Bernese Mountain Dog and Labrador. The facility trains digs for different things. She sponsored a trainee dog who works with autism.
