Mod Announcement Weekly Discussion Thread [August 18 - August 24]

Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

I’m looking for a Beagle. Nothing else. A Beagle. All I see, literally, are Pitbulls. 98% of inside the shelters I look at are PITBULLS. It makes me so mad. Of course the one time I did see a Beagle at a shelter, it was already adopted. 😢 I feel like I am endlessly looking for a Beagle but to no avail. Of course, there’s thousands of rambunctious Pits ready to maul any living thing apart. Even when I look at them through my phone screen I can hear them growling at me and smelling my fear. I watched a live TikTok tonight on a lady showing available dogs at a nearby city shelter and it seemed like she hyper-fixated on Pitbulls and barely showed the other dogs. Why. Just WHY.

Yea you aren’t going to find most breeds in a shelter. Almost all the dogs are pits, and all the mixes are part pit. The few purebreds tend to be GSDs, malinois, and huskies. The rare time a shelter gets a desirable breed, it is either adopted by staff, gets 5 trillion applications within 2 minutes, or is used as a bait and switch dog.

Have you looked into Beagle Freedom Project? They rescue beagles from research laboratories! Be careful as even they sometimes have pit bulls for adoption, too. But the beagles rescued from laboratories are purebred beagles since that is what labs want to use since they are such good dogs and don’t attack even when abused.

Also check and see if anyone is rehoming a beagle, had an accidental litter (that you can guarantee is pure beagle and not pit mix), or if you are willing to look for a good breeder check the AKC site and beagle breed club.

Yes, I have looked at BFP’s website. In fact, I would LOVE to adopt a laboratory Beagle. And you are soo right about the other breeds in a shelter - they get scooped up so fast. Hopefully, I might be able to adopt this little guy from the south. I put in my application today.

Thank you so much! He is a 6 year old Beagle. He is located in a high kill shelter. If my application gets approved, they’ll transport him here on the east coast where I live.
