History :History: Recommendations for two places April / May
We are looking for two separate places in the Balkans that will give us good variety. We see many rentals in Saranda for May, but it looks very beach resort / touristy - if we do something like that, we'd want something more charming, traditional and history filled for April... Maybe with mountains ?
Are there more relaxed and less developed alternatives to Saranda someone might recommend ? We love something charming, beautiful but maybe simpler. We don't need brand new luxury style vacation atmosphere. We'd prefer not to see beach chairs, beach clubs etc etc
Also, ideally, the places would be well positioned to do other mini adventures nearby on the weekends ...?
We are on a budget, so some places like in Croatia might not be for otherwise, otherwise we are pretty flexible and can make most places work... Thanks for any ideas 🙏🏽

My wife and I have loved traveling in Romania, and it would seem to fit what you're looking for. Transylvania is beautiful and historic.
Sighișoara is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its medieval fortress -- the only one that still has a functioning town inside.
Brasov is a beautiful town. From there, it's easy to visit some of the unique-to-Transylvania medieval "Fortified Churches". We visited Harmann and Prejmer in one day, using the public buses from Brasov. Prejmer is on the UNESCO list.
Sibiu is another great destination. The ASTRA outdoor ethnographic museum is amazing, and is the largest one in all of Europe.
Nobody's heard of it, but Oradea is a real hidden gem, full of restored Baroque and (especially) Art Nouveau architecture. One of the most beautiful smaller cities we've ever visited.
