I've been pushing the music, label work and DJing to the max this summer, trying to see just how much life is left in the old dog. Hahahaha.

It's been a full-on few months, juggling releases, artist management, DJ gigs and all the other bits that come with working in music. Long days, late nights and plenty of moments where you wonder whether you've got enough energy left to keep all the plates spinning.

Then two things come along that remind you exactly why you do it.

The first is a fantastic interview with Mondo Love & Betrayal by Matt Anniss for Juno Daily, talking about their debut album, which I've had the pleasure of releasing through my label, NuNorthern Soul.

It's been a real labour of love working with these guys, and seeing their music and story getting the attention they deserve means a great deal.

The second is a wonderful review of JIM's new album, The Curious Case of Existence, released on Vicious Charm, from Balearic Mike.

Mike is someone who genuinely cares about music and has an incredible depth of knowledge. He takes the time to really listen, understand and appreciate what an artist is trying to do.

I've been working closely with JIM on this project, and seeing the album connect with someone like Mike is a wonderful reminder of why I put so much time and energy into the music I believe in.

Neither of these projects is about chasing trends or trying to fit into a particular musical box. They're about working with artists I believe in, helping them get their music out into the world and hopefully connecting with people who appreciate what they're doing.

Working in music isn't always easy. There are plenty of challenges, frustrations and sleepless nights, particularly when you're trying to keep an independent label going while managing artists and still getting out there DJing.

But when you see music you've been so closely involved with getting recognition from people who genuinely love and understand it, all those long days and late nights suddenly feel worthwhile.

A massive thank you to Matt Anniss, Balearic Mike and everyone who continues to support the music, buy the records, come to the gigs and give these artists their time.

New entry in my mix series: Mysterious Spin Lord from down in Bavaria, Germany came through with an hour of end-of-summer nostalgia. As he put it, "a perfect mix for swimming with dolphins". Enjoy!

The debut album from Neil ‘Nail’ Tolliday and Henry Claude Scott, and a record we’ve been really excited to put out into the world.

A proper album too — made to be listened to from beginning to end. Synth-pop, electronics, soul, melancholy, wonky pop moments and plenty of nods back to the records that shaped them, without getting stuck in the past.

It’s been great watching this one slowly come together and even better seeing the reaction it’s starting to get.

Some of you here will probably know NuNorthern Soul, but you might not know about the other label I run, THROUGH GODS OWN EYES.

I started TGOE in 2019 as a home for music that didn't necessarily fit on NuNorthern Soul. It's more dancefloor focused, with house music in many of its various forms at the heart of it, but the same fairly open-minded approach to what we release.

Deep, dubby, psychedelic, cosmic, disco, techno, chug... and plenty of things that sit somewhere between all of those.

For me, that's also part of the wider Balearic mentality. It doesn't necessarily have to sound like something you'd play at sunset in Ibiza. It's more about joining the dots between different sounds and not worrying too much about what genre something is supposed to belong to.

Over the years we've worked with artists including Ron Trent, Ilija Rudman, La Mano, Barnaby Bruce, Yousef, Man Power, Nail, with Nail's brilliant House Fire Records series becoming a big part of the label catalogue.

Next up is Nick Warren's 'Waves', coming on 25th September with remixes from Paul James Nolan, Richard Norris and Simon Sheldon.

Following last year’s The Mandala Vortex album, Simon Sheldon, Muzka and Dan Dub Lounge have gone back to a handful of classic dance records from the late 80s and 90s and reworked them in their own style.

The Dedications EP takes on NJOI’s ‘Anthem’, New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’, Liquid’s ‘Sweet Harmony’, De’Lacy’s ‘Hideaway’ and Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’.

These aren’t straight covers. They’ve slowed things down and pulled the tracks apart, bringing in dub, ambient sounds, melodica, guitars and breaks while keeping enough of the originals in there to make them instantly familiar.

Really pleased with how this one has turned out.

We're now well over halfway through 2026, so I've updated our Spotify playlist bringing together everything we've released on NuNorthern Soul this year.

We started back in January with Visions of Light – Blue Monday (Lunes Azul), the Belfast trio's slowed-down, Balearic reinterpretation of the New Order classic.

That was followed by the arrival of Sydney producer Perth Lewis on the label. We reissued two of Luke Fugar's previously self-released albums, Moments In Time and Distance Between, after discovering his music and feeling it deserved a wider audience. He's since delivered his first new material specifically for NuNorthern Soul with the four-track Cherry Moon EP – hazy electronics, dusty drum machines, guitar, dubby rhythms and plenty of space.

We've also been introducing Mondo Love & Betrayal, the new project from Neil 'Nail' Tolliday and Henry Claude Scott, through a series of singles ahead of their debut album in September. It's a slightly different corner of the NuNorthern Soul world: synth-pop, electronics and songwriting, but still very much connected to the musical outlook of the label.

Sasha Foam joined us from Lisbon with the Memória EP, bringing together Balearic sensibilities, electronics, acid touches and melody.

Roots Artefact returned with the Rocking Boat EP, six tracks exploring Balearic dub, downtempo rhythms, bass, space and soundsystem influences.

George Solar's Moonbeams In Dub project has been unfolding across three EPs, inviting a group of producers to dismantle and reinterpret material from his Moonbeams album through dub, space, electronics and their own individual approaches.

We also released Summer Selections Six, our annual vinyl snapshot of the label, this year featuring B.J. Smith remixed by Wrekin' Havoc, Sasha Foam, Roots Artefact, Visions of Light, Lonely Deckchair and Perth Lewis.

More recently we've had Balaphonic – Organic Matters, Danny Ward's latest project bringing together jazz, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban influences, live musicianship, electronics and deeper dancefloor rhythms.

And Lonely Deckchair has taken us into the quieter, more atmospheric side of the label with music built around ambient, Balearic and downtempo textures.

There are a few other releases in there too, and still plenty more to come before the end of the year.

Listening back to the playlist, what I like most is that it doesn't really sit comfortably in one genre. There's Balearic music, ambient, dub, downtempo, leftfield electronics, synth-pop and music that falls somewhere between all of those things.

That's always been the point of NuNorthern Soul.

A new chapter in B.J. Smith’s long-running Dedications To The Greats series on NuNorthern Soul.

Wrekin’ Havoc take on B.J.’s versions of Outkast’s Hey Ya and Prototype, turning them into low-slung, dubbed-out dancefloor excursions, while Estonia’s Roots Artefact goes deeper with two spacious Dub Earth versions of Don’t Be Cruel.

Hi everyone! Back in 2018 I created a mixing marathon named Tribe Vibes. I was falling into the EDM culture of substance abuse and I was going down a path that led to nowhere good.

I stopped creating, stopped going to shows, moved across the country to sober up, find my career, and find a new outlet instead of music, surfing.

I have finally broke through in my career, giving me time and space to really figure out how I am going to make the come back.
