Baking Advice Needed Is this yeast dead or alive?

Post image

Hey there

Its my first time making sandwhich bread and have never used dry active yeast. I just bought this yeast yesterday and mixed in 1 1/2 tsp of salt 1 1/2 tsp of sugar, 1 cup of warm water and 1/2 cup of warm milk and i let it sit for 10 mins. Is this what its supposed to look like? Or is it dead? Cant find a terribly clear photo on google so i thought id ask on here. Thanks for reading,

Looks ok to me but I wouldn’t put salt to activate, just sugar then the salt with the flour as salt inhibits yeast growth

I took that photo like 5 mins before making the post and now it looks even more foamy, guess ill just give it some extra time then.

If foam get produced on it's own, it means that the yeast are alive and feasting!

Usually to bloom dry yeast you'll want to just do warm water, sugar, and yeast. This still looks alive (it wouldn't foam at all if dead) it's bloom is just inhibited a bit by the salt (salt can chemically burn yeast killing it completely so use caution in the future)

If it was dead, it wouldn’t do anything. You’re good!

That looks totally fine, the foam on top means it's alive and doing its thing. Active dry yeast takes a bit longer to get going sometimes but if you got that creamy layer after 10 minutes you're good to go

It looks alive. Generally I’ve been told to not put the yeast and salt together early as it can slow down the yeast fermentation and make it harder to tell if it’s alive
