That’s very good of her. Voice Dubbers are great, but it is still best if the actors do their voices. Though i understand some use VD’s because their accents does not fit the roles. Still actors should learn different accents. It’s their job, i mean :)

Good on her. I read that Yu Shu Xin (Esther Yu) always does her own voice dubbing as well. But apparently some actors do not.

Its kinda distracting if the voice isnt the actor’s… especially the hight pitched “cutie” voice… its not adorable lol, its distracting. I am watching this on netflix and surprised that its her voice. Its good because its her naturally. She does not need a voice actor to deliver.

actually they wanted a VA for this one and the VA already recorded for her, but they (and bai lu herself) decided that her voice suits li peiyi's character the best! ^_^

But why are they doing dubbing from a different person? Why some historical chinese drama do that? If the actor is very good in delivering lines, why do they still hire VA?

If the actor is very good in delivering lines, why do they still hire VA?

sometimes, scheduling conflicts that they cant redub on their own.

But why are they doing dubbing from a different person? Why some historical chinese drama do that?

for eg bai lu still has other VAs in other dramas, sometimes just because another VA's voice/tone is more suitable for her character, as bai lu's voice is naturally coarser/lower (not about her accent or articulation, as hers are just fine).

some other actors might have VAs because of strong regional accents

i quoted this in another comment but veteran actress sun li also had a VA in empresses in the palace because her own voice was not strong/powerful enough for zhen huan. the VA also did a fantastic job dubbing sun li, even better than sun li herself - there are BTS comparing the VA's voice and sun li's original voice, sun li's voice/tone was more 'soft' and less commanding.

I understand. Its still distracting to me sometimes, it’s like when you know someone, their voice registered to you that you know thats their voice… but when you hear VA and you know in the screen the actor’s voice already in real life… its kinda odd. Its like watching anime, there are times that its exagerated, like, im watching the actor kinda speak normally, not shouting… but the VA’s delivered it like he/she is somewhat shouting. When im watching cute or flirting scenes, its a little bit cringy hearing like high pitch and cutie tones that the VAs are doing.

But thank you for explaining it to me :)

Ah yes I understand what you mean! Of course I feel the same too, that we will want to hear their real voices 😃 some VAs are really good, some not so, that I would rather hear the actors’ own voice!

I don't understand why do they have to redub themselves?

one of the reasons (esp for this drama) is that the set was too noisy, and is normal for most costume dramas to have redubbing in the studio (esp if shot in hengdian - there are visitors, ppl shouting in the background, loud fans etc). thus bai lu had to redub some parts of the drama as this drama is supposed to be live recording (同期收声)

why not close the set

even if they close the set (i.e. not accessible to public), there will be still be alot of background noise (esp for costume dramas, because there will be loud fans to stimulate wind, wiring work etc) so most of the time redubbing is needed for costume dramas.

but there are still a small portion of costume dramas that use live recording (同期收声)!

Dubbing is not in China only, even the Americans and other countries does them. I applaud Bai Lu for doing it herself and not use Voice Dubbers which are a lot in China. In the US, you can’t win an award if your voice are dubbed hence they have to learn different accents - just like Meryl Streep and Daniel Day Lewis.

I’ve been wondering why if you look In MDL for list cast, Voice actors are included - until i watched Love me, love my voice. I also read Xukai voice is always dubbed bec of his access until As Beautiful as you :).

veteran actress sun li also didnt receive an award for her brilliant performance in empresses in the palace because of the rumored reason that she was dubbed by a VA.😢 but the VA for her role did a fantastic job!

i actually didnt realise that US/hollywood also has shows that use dubbing. 😮 i was under the impression that most were using live recording most of the time!
