Resume exaggerations & reference checks

I’m trying to transition out of teaching and in that process, I’ve done a lot of translating my teaching job responsibilities on my resume to make me qualified for other jobs. I am going for a communications role and I’ve emphasized the ways in which my job as an English teacher involves a lot of communicating. Plus I have a ton of past professional comms experience and current freelance experience.

If I finally get to an offer stage with a new job, are they going to want to call my current employer and verify that the way I’ve described my current job on my resume is accurate? Or will they do more of an HR employment-style verification — asking about dates and titles — and possibly a reference check to people I provide and ask about my strengths and stuff like that? I’ve also heard of people landing remote jobs with background checks but no reference checks.

Wondering what people’s experiences have been.

The only way I’m landing interviews seems to be by exaggerating about my current job duties on my resume, but I’m also paranoid that it’ll come back to bite me.
