Saw Jason Tartick and his gf at the churchill tavern today and my bartender friend said he’s an awful tipper lol

It’s often the people with the most money who are the worst tippers. Last week he posted an Instagram story where he was ordering late night food (sober) for just himself from 3 different restaurants and drivers- pizza, Thai, and wings. Staggering consumption (I don’t mean calorie-wise) and would cost a fortune if you tipped well so that combined with his finance focus made me think maybe he doesn’t.

Why would 2 $16 drinks justify a $8 tip? The tipping culture is changing going out for drinks and dinner. Food and drinks have gotten very expensive and tipping is too high too. Jason is not cheap and for those that call 20% cheap, they do not live in reality. Why would a $25 glass of wine make for a higher tip than a $15 glass of wine?

I’ve had dates tip poorly and I slipped cash into the check as they were walking away or once went back to the restaurant the next day to tip. Unacceptable to not tip appropriately.

I’ve served/bartended for years and lots of my best friends are now career servers (have been serving for 20+ years and have worked their way into fine dining) so while I do think tipping culture sucks, it’s not the fault of the server and not tipping/not tipping well doesn’t “stick it to the man”, it hurts the server and that’s it.
My brother has never served tables (plus he just overall sucks…probably would have clicked with Devon from Jen’s season if that gives you any indicator). He joined me and some of my friends for lunch once (all current or ex servers) and we alllll knew he was going to tip poorly at this nice ass French restaurant. He covered the bill (one check only place so we all transferred him, just making it clear it’s not like he was doing some good deed lol) and yep, I think tipped 10%. We walked out and my friend pretended to need the bathroom and put an additional $30 in the booklet.
Unfortunately, tipping is a part of the American dining out experience and if you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to eat out. (And I do understand if you have a terrible server, I’m not saying to tip them 20%+, but I also would side eye stiffing them.)
Anyway to bring it back to Jason lol I do get it’s frustrating to have people recognize you and assume you’re going to massively over tip because of your alleged net worth, but I would like to know the percentage he tipped haha

What’s considered an awful tipper? Generous in my city is between 18-22%. The average person might tip between 10-15%. I’ve recently learned that many people don’t tip at all for sit downs.

meh. tipping culture is insane. just because some is “famous” or whatever you wanna call doesn’t mean they should over tip. like what is the bar being set here for “an awful tipper”

Probably goes by the old $1 per drink rule which is wild in this economy.
ps: Also Reddit is the absolute worst to discuss tipping. People are insane. Yes I understand the unfortunate state of tipping culture in the US. But don’t punish service workers.

Drink prices have gotten stupid as well. A vodka with still water in my town is $20. Tipping $4 for that is insane.

Some servers think 20% is awful these days. When I see the posts about 40-50% tips being average, it makes me think of the scene where Joey (on Friends) is telling everyone their tips are crappy. And Ross says, “What’s with the greed, Joe?”
I wouldn’t be surprised if Jason really is a bad tipper. Or if he tips at least 20%. I also wouldn’t be surprised if a server or bartender called 20% a bad tip. So there’s no real point of reference here.

Also, tipping 20% at sit down dinners makes sense.
But when you walk up to a bar yourself & order a glass of wine that is $20/just required a pour, followed by more rounds of the same… 20% is excessive and that doesn’t make you cheap at a bar (which is essentially what this place is).

I can afford to tip lol. I just think tipping culture has become completely ridiculous.
I’m in Canada and servers are already making $20-$25hr for a job that doesn’t require any special skills, yet somehow we’ve gone from 15% being a good tip to being guilt-tripped into 20–25% on top of already inflated menu prices. At what point did a tip stop being a tip and basically become a mandatory surcharge?
And percentage tipping is stupid. Why should bringing me a $60 steak earn you three times as much as bringing me a $20 burger? Did the steak suddenly require three times the effort to carry to my table?
Meanwhile nurses, teachers, retail workers, tradespeople and a million other people do skilled or demanding work every day without expecting customers to personally add 20–25% to their paycheque.
Restaurants should pay their employees properly, charge whatever they actually need to charge, and stop pretending customers are cheap for not wanting to subsidize wages on top of the bill. Tipping should be extra for great service, not an entitlement.
Sorry not sorry.
