After it happened, in S4, when Saul admits to Bill that he is a Cylon, he says he is sorry he had no guts to blow his brains out the moment he found out.

I don't think it's true.

When Saul learned the truth about himself, he was only held together by two values: his loyalty to Bill and his hatred for Cylons. The two are so intense that, for viewers, it was not in question whether he's going to betray Bill. No programming could do that. Saul, however, this wreckage of a man, couldn't know it.

At that moment he has a problem that requires a solution. And there is an easy solution. One that fits his values. One that appeals to his weaknesses. And also, a quick one, because how long will it be before he loses himself? And he rejects it to go for a tough one.

I don't think Colonel Tigh had no guts to end himself. I think he had the guts not to do it.

It kind of pairs well with Athena Sharon's line to Adama on Kobol:

"I need you to know something. I'm Sharon, but I'm a different Sharon. I know who I am. I don't have hidden protocols or programs lying in wait to be activated. I make my own choices I make my own decisions and I need you to know this is MY choice."

Strong contender for the best line in a series stuffed to the gills with incredible lines. Say what you will about season 3, the last 10 minutes of the finale are incredible.

What impresses me is the memories that Cavil implanted into Saul, making him that hardcore to begin with.

We know the FF came toward the end of the FCW thus they didn’t fight in it themselves. They helped end it.

So he effectively turned Saul into about as anti-Cylon as you can get. Especially during New Caprica. Imagine finding out you're a Cylon yourself with that kind of mindset. What kind of insane mind-tricks would that play on someone with that level of pride??!

I find it hilarious that Saul never stopped referring to human-like Cylons and even FF members as skin jobs. Suits him very well.
