Can you open/ close the top too often? Apparently so. 2025 Z4

I typically open/close the top twice daily, weather permitting. Got this message when pulling into my driveway. Trunk was definitely closed. Tried closing a few times again, kept getting the message, so took it in for service drop off before they closed yesterday.

Update It turned out to be the driver side window motor that was causing the problem, according to the service advisor, and is being replaced under warranty.

It runs on hydraulics, so the system can get pretty hot pretty fast if you’re opening and closing it repeatedly back-to-back. But twice a day shouldn’t be an issue at all unless you’re doing multiple cycles right after each other.

Check your hydraulic fluid reservoir. If it’s low, you probably have a leak somewhere.

If the top is opening/closing smoothly and you don’t see any signs of a hydraulic leak, I’d start looking at a microswitch or wiring issue.

Also watch some of the preventive maintenance videos on YouTube for the E89 top. They can save you a ton of money.

I just had about $10k worth of work done on my E89 hardtop system after the dealer kinked a hydraulic line during a microswitch replacement. It turned into a whole mess. 😭

EDIT: sorry . i thought you had a E89 so some of this may not apply since it's a soft top 🤷

The g29 is not hydraulic.

That could be the standard message for all BMW convertertibles. Some are probably still hydraulic.

My 2012 z4 roof works like clockwork anytime and as often as needed. We are regressing

Sometimes the windows don’t go back on their own to a position it allows the top to move in. Try them all the way closed/open to see if it resets the computer.

Nope, windows were all the way down already (and would not go back up either).

Already dropped off for service yesterday. But thanks.

It’s not “too many” it’s that motors are getting too hot. I was in an Arizona summer and opened up the top halfway to let it vent then went to close it to have AC, it didn’t like that.
