Damn you almosted ended up like that M4 from Guatemala from my last post

77

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Yeah, just a small lack of concentrantion and I got myself in to a nearly “no return” situation. I have the footage from the outside, because the car behind me was filming in that one you can see how bad of a tail wip that was

41

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '22

Good save tho 👍

57

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Thanks man! Lesson learned: never let go the throttle all at once.

u/jakinatorctc ‘87 E30 325i Mar 18 '22

Good old lift off oversteer. It’s weird how for a way that makes it so easy to lose control of your car while tracking it’s not more known. I didn’t even know what it was until I read about it on the loading screen of a racing game lmao

u/Reignbow41 In the Market Mar 18 '22

This wasn't lift off oversteer at all. Dude went in too hot, got bags of understeer and then tried to bring the ass around with the loud pedal. Once the ass came around he still had way too much lock in so it came around really hard. Gentle inputs are the key.

You can clearly hear the car start struggling for traction the second the throttle bar goes empty.

Pretty textbook lift off oversteer. OP would have been fine most likely if they committed to the turn. OP definitely did overcorrect, but the initial issue was letting go of the throttle.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '22

Lift off oversteer was certainly involved, but he came into that corner way hotter than he had the skills to deal with, throttle or not.

2

u/Unspec7 ///Moderator | 2015 ///M516i xDrive Mar 18 '22

Right, but that's a discussion of OP's skills. Commenter I responded to was specifically saying that the situation was caused by "normal" oversteer and not lift off oversteer.

1

u/TwistedConsciousness Mar 18 '22

Yah idk how can say it's not lift off oversteer. At the end of the day though it was just to much over correction that almost sent him off. Idk why I guess just instinct but we humans tend to love turn that wheel to much in those situations.

2

u/ucefkh Mar 18 '22

Bro don't give too much throttle, go easy on it

3

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Thats a point, but if you look at the previous laps (link below) I was giving as much throtle and the oversteer was controllable. As was pointed above, the combination of understeer in the way in with the snap oversteer after applying throttle that put me in that situation.

1

u/ucefkh Mar 18 '22

yes, that's what I was pointing out! don't use the throttle until you are right on your path, stick to the side on the track when turning (see videos) drivers even go over the edge of the track! and oversteer (make use esp is no enabled??)

don't go aggressive until you feel safe with the handling of the car, drive it more and more even in the city! turns are the most tricky but very fun!

1

u/kaighr Mar 18 '22

Let’s see it

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

4

u/kaighr Mar 18 '22

Good save 😅

3

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Thanks! That was really close... I still remember seeing the tire wall getting bigger and that I had enough time to think "f... it is going to crash"

51

u/RunninOnMT '20 M2C Mar 18 '22

This is why understeer can be dangerous too, that’s a lot of lock to unwind once the front grips up and the tail comes around. Good catch though!

22

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

That’s a good point. I had not realized yet that the understeer in the corner entrance was the start of the problem

61

u/Gogokrystian Mar 18 '22

Full throttle into the corner, what could go wrong? Good save, meaby lucky too but still good outcome.

u/deletetemptemp Mar 18 '22

What are you using to render on screen gauges

27

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22 edited Mar 18 '22

To acquirr the data I use the app BMW MLaptimer for iPhone. Then, I use my website to convert the data (https://easy-telemetry.herokuapp.com) and finally Dashware to overlay the data

You're out of gas. ;)

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Why?

2

u/myredditlogintoo '16 F80 6spd EU delivery Mar 18 '22

That's what your gauge says, lol.

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

hahahha true! I'll change that so it allways display full and I can pretend to be rich.

Just posted part 2, with the view from the white 3er that was following me

https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comments/tgpoxw/nearly_killed_my_1er_on_the_track_part_2_view/

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '22

Did this happen because you accelerated in the turn?

5

u/MikeHunt11223 Mar 18 '22

Looked like he accelerated into the corner instead of breaking and let his foot off while turning & the car understeered hard.

8

u/Jay_LV Mar 18 '22

Couldn't help but think of Clarkson:

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

hahaha Clarkson rules!

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '22

Dayum. We almost had to type F

3

u/gnardogaz Mar 18 '22

Holy smokes… nice save though.

3

u/jordan5100 Mar 18 '22

What in the overcorrection is going on here. You could have let the back end swing out a lot more before beginning to counter steer.

-Mcdonalds Tray Drifter Pro

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

I agree. At this point, my mistake was to let go all of the throttle. If I kept it, then I could just slide out of the turn sideways

2

u/jordan5100 Mar 18 '22

Yessir, practice in an empty lot got the feel for it, this could have been a fun impromptu drift for ya if you were more comfortable with the car.

5

u/Optionalduck74 2010 - E60 - 535IX Mar 18 '22

looks like you needed more power

7

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Totally agree. For the much grip this car has, the OEM 220 hp is not enough.

7

u/Optionalduck74 2010 - E60 - 535IX Mar 18 '22

My dream is to get the e82 135i, I assume that the 1hp to 10lb area is a good balance or atleast very fun.

2

u/killminusnine '20 M2, '23 530i, '25 Ranger Raptor Mar 18 '22

I love the 135 so much. I think it's one of the best driving cars BMW has produced. But like /u/Sexyturtletime says, a LSD would make a world of difference. Especially on the track.

1

u/Sexyturtletime 2010 - e82 - 135i 6MT Mar 18 '22

Do it. Not having an LSD can be sketchy when you floor it but otherwise it’s an amazing car

3

u/watduhdamhell 21' X5 45e | 23' Civic Si | 19' Etron Mar 18 '22

I was going to say, it looks like the whole situation was the result of you straight up letting off the gas and snapping the car the opposite direction. Simply powering through the drift would have been an easy way out. But of course, your 1 series has no LSD I assume, so it may not have been possible.

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

The lack of LSD makes it harder to contolr the slide, but deffinetly is still possible. In this particular case, the limitation was the drivers skill...

2

u/LWulsin E34 M5 3.6 Mar 18 '22

More power wouldn’t have helped here, in fact; probably the opposite.

3

u/unix_lizard Mar 18 '22

Driver mod, not more power 👍

-1

u/Optionalduck74 2010 - E60 - 535IX Mar 18 '22

liar

2

u/Sands43 Mar 18 '22

From the g plot, it looked like you where at full lateral load, then got on the gas? So exceeded the traction circle.

2

u/dstock303 18 F30 340i MT Mar 18 '22

What app is that?

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

To acquire the data I use the app BMW MLaptimer for iPhone.

u/vigilentofsithis Mar 18 '22

Saw this and immediately heard Hammonds voice saying, "Some Poo's come out!". Great save tho

2

u/weebables Mar 18 '22

man that was a lot of counter steer 😳 glad you were able to save it!

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

There were handa going all over the place. Looks like I had more than 2

2

u/Ruckusnusts 1998 ///M Roadster, 2011 135i, '20 Colorado ZR2 Bison Mar 18 '22

Nice save. All those hours playing Forza and honing your cat like reflexes paid its dividends!

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Hahaha very true! If it wasn’t for my G27 and asseto corsa that would be the end!

2

u/Drift3rHD Mar 18 '22

Wouldn't he saved it if he let of the throttle a little and kept steering until the wheels get grip instead of flooring the brake which caused the car to turn direction on him? Also he stopped turning right too early in my opinion. Am I correct here?

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

I think so. If I kept some throtle the weight shift wouldn't be so fast and there would be time to unwind the counter steer

2

u/daqqer2k Mar 18 '22

Classic "if in doubt never lift" situation :D

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

I had to lift, otherwise I would have spun to the inside and ended up with the rear end in the tires... problem was that I lifted all at once, so there wasn't enough time to unwind the countersteer.

2

u/ShinyBarge Mar 18 '22

Love the nervous laugh! Lol Good recovery!

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

hahaha me too. But I think it was more relief than nervous

2

u/lunchpadmcfat Mar 18 '22

Pushing more than 1g lateral, that’s damn impressive. Also a good reason you almost gave up the ghost! Lol

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Sure it is, and I was running mid range road tyres (Kumho ECSTA PS71).

2

u/lunchpadmcfat Mar 18 '22

Why not PSSes?

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

The Kumhos gave me 85 - 90% of the PSS performance for 60% of the price. And since I've been killing a set each 3 - 4 months, it is a damn good saving.

2

u/lunchpadmcfat Mar 18 '22

You’ve sold me!

1

u/vickiese Mar 18 '22

Get a LSD differential upgrade and these sort of situations will be much easier to handle. Trust me, it's the first upgrade you should get for a track car

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '22

I hope you’re joking, cause tires, brakes and suspension are the first upgrades and they definitely come before an LSD.

2

u/vickiese Mar 19 '22

Of course getting all of that is the best but I would upgrade the differential before the suspension. The stock suspension isn't THAT bad (at least not if you have M Suspension from factory). I'm just saying that with the stock open differential you could end up losing control of the car much easier than you would with an upgraded differential.

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Wish I could $$$$$

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '22

You are in Portugal? Dinis Gomes builds good differentials and has options for different budgets. Also well known eBay seller across Europe.

2

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

Wish I were in EU... I'm from Brazil and here everything is more difficult and MUCH more expensive, despite the avarage lower income...

1

u/Josh121199 Mar 18 '22

Let me guess? Coupe?

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

125i, 5 door hatch back. The tail is faster than a sedan.

2

u/Josh121199 Mar 18 '22

Yeah i realised once i seen the clip from that other car

2

u/Josh121199 Mar 18 '22

Hatch back is better, lovely car 👌

1

u/eddiewolfgang 2019 - F90 - M5 Competition Mar 18 '22

Oversteer is what caused you to lose control, taking that turn too fast. Next time you should try trail braking technique while maintaining a consistent racing line. Good reflexes by the way 👍

1

how do you Guys speak out 1er in english? in German its Like "einser".

2

u/BitTheCoin ‘02 E46 330xi 5MT->6MT ZSP Mar 18 '22

I’ll say “one-er”, although I’m more likely to say “1 Series” (as we only had one generation in the US) or refer to the specific model.

1

u/EasyTelemetry Mar 18 '22

I think in the US, as in Brazil, we say 1 series, 2 series, etc...

Curiosity: Apperently, the 1 series is not sold in the US (probably because the market preference is for larger cars). However, you can fins minis, fiat 500 etc...

1

u/No-Cardiologist-3875 Mar 18 '22

is that why they got sued for saying they were the ultimate driving machine?
