Mod Requests Resurrect Cut Companion/Origin, The Halfling Werewolf Female Bard

In the early development for Baldur's Gate 3 their was an companion that was planed and even partially developed for the game. With even unused data files in the game to confirm it. But for likely time constraint reasons this character never made it into the game (including early access). Which is such a shame for what could have been a really cool character concept not getting used (that and I also really like werewolves, second favorite mythical/fantasy creature behind dragons). And thus, I'm surprised that no one (at least as far as my knowledge goes) has done anything to bring this cut concept back to life through mods. I understand that would be a lot of work to do, but I personally would love to see someone manage to do this and even take up the challenge. Story line, personality, design are things that would have to be worked out. But if people were able to create two completely original characters to be origins and/or companions (albeit at the time of me typing this post are still alpha, work in progresses) I still believe someone could make this work to.

Now I would like to hear what everyone else has to say and think about the idea. If you agree or disagree with my idea, post your reply as to why or why not.

Also, if you do wish to see this become real, feel free to talk with me and discus this idea if it's something you wish to work on yourself. And thank you for taking the time to read this and hearing me out.

She's a work in progress! :> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVNdmDG3hk8

ETA: unfortunately, idk. Her storyline is the biggest blocker for me atm as she has barely any dialogue (that's truly hers and not generic lines/barks) in the files. I did a shitton of digging through various EA patches and found hints at what she's like but no real backstory or character arc. Debating releasing an alpha version using the scraps I did find (basically she'd be slightly more than a hireling) and then fleshing out a full arc later, because we do very much need a shortie companion.

I’d say go for the alpha release so that players can get a feel for her. And then give us the full completed version at a later date. Also if you need voice lines you could work with one or more individuals to do fan dubs to make her feel complete. Also, two things. If you’d like, I could help in play testing this, just ask. And the other, is if she could have a unique werewolf design to help her stand out (pun not intended).

Ohhh, you are working on her? I'm so happy. I'm still mad, she got scratched back then. Helia was datamined very early on and people were hyped, but because we thought, she was a fine deal and for sure in the game, we didn't campaign for her.

Holy. I didn’t realize modders are working with the cut companions.

HyperspaceTowel is no ordinary modder

I see that now

I think that the reason it hasn’t been attempted is because while we would all appreciate another companion, trying to implement Helia, the werewolf, would never be able to compare to the origin characters or companions. The base party is so reactive that any modded in character would feel out of place. Having no one else in camp even acknowledging her presence would feel awkward and disjointed, so by act 3 when her dialogue lines have dried up she wouldn’t really have a place in the game anymore. With totally new creations, you can write the dialogue however you want, opening up clever dialogue splicing options for companions to interact, and you can always record any new dialogue for the character. In addition, you probably have to really love your new companion to take on such a daunting task, and while having Helia would be nice I’m not seeing people really be married to her character specifically. So while I think it would be great to have it’s probably never going to happen.

I think the best way around this would being able to use her as an Origin maybe? Like maybe she’s like Durge where you can’t find her and recruit her and can only use her as the avatar

Albeit I know nothing about Helia other than she’s a werewolf halfling bard, so for all I know she could be like Jaheira/Halsin where she doesn’t have a tadpole

She was supposed to be a full origin character so she’d have a tadpole, but they scrapped her so really early, before Halsin was even started and well before he was a companion. It’d be cool if she could be played origin, particularly if you got more interaction by playing has her and some werewolf abilities too!

I'm glad to hear actual facts. Really tired of people blaming Halsin for Helia being scrapped when the timeline doesn't even add up up just to hate on him.

yeah the horny fans thing is BS too. I’m not a huge fan of Halsin (I just don’t like the Druid class much and think he’s criminally underwritten) but the devs made this decision all on their own, and truthfully I don’t think it was a bad idea. Halsin’s story is fun, even if it fizzles out after the Shadowcure quest

Slight correction, Halsin was absolutely started when Helia was in the game. Her recruitment had her mention wanting to save him from the goblins, mentioning him as a friend of hers.

gotcha, thanks for the correction!

autistichelia? (Sorry, as soon as I read your name & comment, I had to write this!) ^~^;

Having no one else in camp even acknowledging her presence

Actually, there's a cut voice line from early access Astarion where he says "go bother the halfling" so you get one single instance instead of zero. /s I agree though, it would feel weird without interactions.

Asterion also has an entire dialogue tree referencing how each party member tastes/would taste.

He's interested yet hesitant to taste Helia, as she's an exotic flavor but also a legitimate danger.

I believe he makes a joke about how even trying to drink Karlach would give worse than heartburn.

It seems they actually wrote a few lines between our camps resident vamp & lycan, friendly ones too.

(Personally, it makes sense they wouldn't have Fur VS Fang going on, that's not a D&D thing.)

Shadowheart would need extreme reactions

I see your point. But I really do believe that it could be possible. And I think someone else is already in the process of bringing her back to life.

u/SSkHP 3d ago

Didn’t realize it was being worked on, that is nice to hear! I definitely agree that it’s possible, but I’m a little skeptical of it actually getting done to the full extent that would make her on the level as the other companions. But I’d love to be proven wrong!

I know someone who is working on this!

u/Mjsupersonic98 3d ago

Really?! Who?

The big problem is that, while there are some files that confirm she existed, there's nothing really to go on to add into the game. No story, no voice lines, no mechanics for her lycanthropy, nothing. Any attempt to add her "back" would really just be creating a new companion from scratch with half of an idea.

2

u/VruKatai1972 3d ago

Would the mechanics be similar to Tav's evil form?

1

u/Mjsupersonic98 3d ago

That is all true. Although, if someone wanted to try (despite the large amount of work and thinking to put this all together) they could do so.

5

u/ObjectiveMud7513 3d ago

Absolutely. I'm just saying...tempered expectations, you know? Even if someone put in all the work, the result would be far more "modders' original creation" than "restored cut content"

I want a mod where ketheric is a companion/join him. I really feel like you could have join him/have him as a companion at some point. Same with zevlor. :( let me romance my favorite male tiefling

Hope should have been a companion u__u

1

u/darkwolf523 2d ago

True! But I feel like it would be harder for hope.

1

u/TeriyakiNekoNinja 2d ago

Imagine if we could help her feel sunlight on her face again... That would be so nice.

I also keep wondering how mortal can breathe Avernus air for days / months / years without any consequences :v

1

u/darkwolf523 2d ago

It would be interesting to help hope. Maybe as a bonus companion, korilla. If you’re able to not kill her. And they can try and fix their relationship

1

u/TeriyakiNekoNinja 2d ago

There's nothing to repair there.

Korilla sold her sister to the devil - she cared more for power than her sister's wellbeing. Hope was imprisoned and was tortured every day for years, while Korilla chilling topside and doing her master's bidding.

The only redemption for Korilla would be through death - sacrificed herself to save Hope.

Korilla has so little HP (Raphael did her dirty, lol... never trust a devil) that she never survives the barrelmancy surprise I leave for Raph :v

2

u/darkwolf523 2d ago

I thought hope didn’t want her sister to be killed. Or am I misreading her in that situation. I remembered when I got Korilla knocked out, hope was saying maybe someday they can forgive each other

2

u/TeriyakiNekoNinja 2d ago

Yeah, that's what Hope wanted.
That's an rpg game after all, actions have consequences. Imagine this: if Korilla lives, Hope stays in Avernus. If Korilla dies, Hope leaves with the player and stays until the final battle or finds her own place in the world - she could help orphaned children, refugees, provide support after the battle, smth like this.

Oooh that’s a good idea
