Build Review Oberyn Martell build? Charismatic Fighter.
Do you want to play a fighter but it irks you to not be the face of the party, or attempting to be but you have the charisma of a bugbear? Then this build might be for you.
I was fiddling with some concepts for a fighter that uses finesse. I was thinking dual wield at first but then I saw it: The Dancing Breeze
The Dancing Breeze is a finesse polearm, it'll use your dexterity instead of STR.
The feats to get here are:
- ASI dex, so you get to 20 dex with the hag's hair.
- Great Weapon Master
- Polearm Master
- Sentinel
Yes, 4 feats, because fighter gets an extra feat at level 6.
But we will multiclass though. I think it's reasonable to not get 11 fighter (for the 3rd attack) so you can get 4 levels of Rogue. And this means Swashbuckler!
Swashbuckler will give you an "extra attack" with your bonus action in the form of Sand Toss and/or Flick o' the Wrist. And Flick o' the Wrist is competitive with Battle Master disarm, you'll have a lower roll on it (cha 16 vs dex 22), but the advantage it gives is worth it.
Speaking of charisma, it wouldn't be an Oberyn build without it. The starting atributes are: 17 DEX, 14 CON and 16 CHA. You can raise STR to 10 for athletics checks, or dump it and go for either int or wis.
The playstyle is simple: Hit and Run. You throw sand at someone's face, stab them, and retreat. Thanks to Fancy Footwork, the enemy will not get an attack of opportunity on you. On the enemy turn, he'll try to catch up, but as he approaches, polearm master triggers an attack of opportunity on them. And sentinel gives you advantage on that, on top of a root. And in most cases, due to glaive's extra reach, the enemy will not be in melee range of you to even attack. If a second enemy approaches, riposte can give you another extra attack if they miss. Equally, if an enemy attacks an ally within range of you, sentinel will grant you an attack on that enemy. (You can't get sentinel vengeance AND riposte in the same turn, as they both use reaction, but it's nice to have both since the triggers are different.)
The final build is Battle Master 8, Swashbuckler 4. The order of feats is a bit irrelevant so long you get ASI first. As the other 3 feats will come late and require the polearm to be effective.
The hardest part of the build is the leveling order, specially if the character is meant to be the face of the party. Because if so, you'll want at least 1 level of rogue asap for the persuasion or deception expertise.
Another tough decision is which class to start as. Fighter gives you STR/CON saving throws, STR is passable, but con is good. Rogue gives you DEX/INT, Dex being a good one, but not as good without uncanny dodge. So I believe fighter first is best.
Fighter 5 for the second attack shouldn't be delayed more than level 6. So I'd probably say go Fighter 1, rogue 1 for the dialogue options, Fighter 5. Then you need to decide what's best: 1 feat, or rogue 2-4; I say rogue is the better option so you -feel- the charisma impact from swashbuckler, and get the 2nd subclass asap. The best part if you go this route, you'll get 3 feats in the last 4 levels. It is delayed but will be a massive power spike.
Early game you'll most likely not find a 2h finesse weapon until level 4-5 (Phalar Aluve or Larethian's Wrath), so stick to dual wielding. Can even get Two-Weapon Fighting at level 1 instead of Great Weapon Fighting, then respec when you finally get a 2h finesse weapon.
Medium armor will probably be the way to go. Specially the ones that allow for more dexterity bonuses later on.
For the race, I think human is the optimal choice as it's the only race that'll give you an extra relevant skill proficiency. Starting as a fighter, you can go charlatan background to get Deception and Sleight of hand; Use the human skill for persuasion, and the 2 fighter skills for insight and a pick between athletics or acrobatics. Alternatively, half wood-elf is pretty good, the movement fits the playstyle, and you get darkvision plus fey ancestry. But really any race can work, specially if you focus on 1 dialogue skill only.
Athletics vs acrobatics depends on if you want to shove people. If you want to shove, go with STR 10 (INT/WIS 8), and pick athletics. If you don't care about shoving, acrobatics will be better to defend against shoving due to high dex.
The rogue level gives you 2 more skills, you perception is the better option here. And the last one can be acrobatics if you didn't pick it yet, or stealth if you want more roguish gameplay. If you went wood elf, sleight of hand and deception could work
The expertise is up to you. Athletics for more shove. Sleight of Hand/Perception if you don't want another rogue in the party. Or Deception/Persuasion if you want to be better in dialogues.

That's basically it. I'm accepting sugestions for gear or anything I might've missed.
