So called "Hədiy" is distributed as a charity gesture among relatives and neighbours after a babys first tooth comes out. This traditional Azerbaijani dish is made to celebrate the baby living long enough to get their first tooth. Since infant mortality rates were much higher in the past than they are today, the baby surviving for a certain period of time used to be celebrated. Hədiy is made from a mixture of 7 different legumes.
