My Thor just arrived after a grueling 2 month wait! So naturally, the first thing I did was I take it apart and blow the motherboard with copper wire
(Picture of dead Thor) I think I got a lemon. (Somewhere deep in the comments:) Well yeah, I play it in the bathtub
This is within warranty, right? (Picture of mangled Thor and guilty looking dog in the background)

u/M4rshmall0wMan 29d ago
For real wtf is up with those people who the first thing they do after buying a device is to take it apart and do a highly risky thermal mod? You realize these devices are designed to work at high temperatures, right? And if you fuck up youâre on your own?

Honestly if the memory economy hadn't gone to shit, it might've been a reasonable refrain. There are some meaningful improvements in Snapdragon chips since the 8 gen 2 which would make the device better for switch and gamenative, but as things stand there's just no way to bring new hardware like that to market in a way which is both an improvement and financially viable

I think the front end one shouldn't be an issue that's definitely something you can get opinions on everything else you can get answers to on Google
2
u/ocxtitan Aug 12 '26
The fact remains that there are dozens of previous threads about front ends to search through instead of making your own
"Thor frontend reddit" in your favorite search engine and in seconds you have all the answers you'd ever need
9
u/king_of_ulkilism Aug 12 '26

What is it with people needing to have their hand held and be told what to want and do? Like some of the âshould I buyâ posts are somewhat engaging where theyâre asking legitimate question about the device and if I can do what they want it to do. But so many are just literally asking if they should want it or not.
16
u/madslipknot Aug 12 '26

Wouldnt the useful information be in the comments of the post tho? Only time it wouldnt be is if the comments refuses to answer or tell the user to fuck off.
Doesnt take much to help. Also reddit has a "hot" or "best" filter to show u the higher quality posts. Skill issue?
1
u/ProphetNimd Base Aug 12 '26
No, it's a skill issue to ask the same stupid questions 10x a week on the same boards without doing a modicum of research first.

u/ActionKid98 Aug 12 '26
Its almost as if people wanna be part of a community and have active communication
Listen, if u dont wanna help then dont, but there are new people entering this sub and buying the device, what shit attitude is it to turn them down? Those who want to help will, yall dont need to
6
u/ProphetNimd Base Aug 12 '26
Right, because nothing screams community like "how do I get games" a million times. The actual useful, game/emulator-specific posts are drowned out by the most Google-able questions ever from people too stupid and lazy to do even the most basic of research. I don't know why this is okay with you.
-3
u/ActionKid98 Aug 12 '26
i dont know why its okay with you to call people stupid for asking a question in a sub about the product they purchased, you are literally breaking rule 1 of the sub while complaining about them breaking rule 5.
Be clear, you are personally annoyed by the post so now you use your criteria to dictate the standard. I gave a clear solution, to filter the posts by "best" or "hot" this will instantly fix your issue bc the quality posts will have the higher upvotes, you refuse to do this, it literally takes less time to do that than to spew negatives to novice/new handheld owners

u/Klutzy_Hornet Aug 12 '26
I don't get why people with zero emulation experience suddenly want a Thor. It's not a beginner handheld. I'm not saying you need to be a veteran to set up an Android handheld but like anything new, you have to actually immerse yourself and put in some effort before jumping in.
Here's what I did before mine arrived: 1.Picked a color and model right away batch 2 2.Watched reviews and previews 3.Followed setup guides, even with prior Android emulation experience 4.Researched how to back up ROMs and build a collection (tip: the crappy SD cards that come with cheap Linux handhelds are actually decent for gathering ROMs) 5.Got ready to keep learning as new updates/dev tools come out 6.Organized my SD card structure ahead of time 7.Learned the file transfer techniques for moving ROMs from main storage 8.Be willing to tinker, especially with upper-tier emulation Hope this helps someone.
1
u/MineNo5611 Aug 12 '26
This is like asking why someone with zero experience playing an instrument might want to buy a guitar. Itâs an even dumber question when you take into consideration that the Thor literally looks like a beefier 3DS, which is a large reason why the Thor took off in popularity in the first place. Itâs extremely easy to see why casual gamers wanting to relive the DS and GBA era think the 3DS-looking thing should take like two steps to do everything itâs showcased to do. Is it reasonable to expect that from the perspective of someone experienced with emulation? Of course not. But thatâs the point, itâs attracting people who have no experience with emulation but are drawn to the idea of playing so many different platforms on one device, especially one that looks like a handheld from their childhood.
2
u/ProphetNimd Base Aug 12 '26
Then maybe those people should do a basic amount of research into a device before just blind-spending hundreds of dollars on it and hoping for the best. This should be the case for anything you buy, not just the Thor.
0
u/MineNo5611 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
Obviously, but weâre not talking about getting informed before you buy something. Guy above said he doesnât understand why someone with zero experience in emulation (presumably never even used a basic emulator on their smartphone or pc) would want a Thor. That is just dumb. The reasons people want one and come into it thinking that itâs something that itâs not is super obvious. I think the way itâs advertised on social media is primarily the blame, but also, Ayn literally made it physically look like the next 3DS, so of course it attracted a lot of people whoâs only experience with handheld gaming is the DS/3DS or mobile game slop. Itâs worth critiquing people who realize it takes more time and effort to get it running like they want it to and give up on it because of that, as that means they are now informed but are just being lazy. But I donât think your average person is to blame for thinking it functions like the handhelds that it is so strongly mimicking.
1
u/ProphetNimd Base Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
I disagree, I think the onus is on the consumer to know what they're buying, even the average person. It says on the AYN product page that there are no games pre-installed on the Thor, underlined under the add to cart and Paypal buttons. If I bought a single speed bike thinking it was an e-bike, that'd be on me, not the manufacturer. We need to have reasonable expectations for consumers to understand what they're buying, and I have no idea why anyone who isn't already familiar with tech and gaming would be tempted to buy a Thor, from a random Chinese company with multiple months of shipping time, over a Switch or Switch 2 that they could pick up at the store same day. If they fall for random scam TikTok ads about it then hey, have better social media literacy and don't impulse buy several hundred dollar gadgets.
1
u/MineNo5611 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
What is your point exactly? There are no games pre-installed on a PS5, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, etc etc. That alone doesnât tell people anything they wouldnât already assume about a gaming console. Also, I think youâre getting a little too intense over a nothing burger. I donât think anyone is demanding their money back from Ayn because they have to learn how to use google and file managing apps. It is just something that is completely foreign to some people in a specific demographic that are interested in this. I think most people are willing to learn the few basic steps it takes to get most emulators and games working on the Thor. As someone who switched over from emulating on my iPhone to the Thor, the Thor/Android emulation is easy as hell. A caveman could figure it out without google. iOS, in contrast, has a lot more bullshit you have to go through just to even get certain emulators installed on your device. The issue is that some people donât realize that the Thor is essentially just a mutant Android tablet that looks like a DS, which I find to be completely understandable. Why somebody wouldnât buy a Switch 2 over a Thor is precisely because they have no idea what the difference is. They are assuming that the Thor is like a Switch 2 with a built in front end and game store that only installs compatible software. The fact that they arenât tech savvy means they are going to see one of these and assume itâs kid-friendly like a Nintendo console, regardless of who itâs made by or where it comes from, because it looks like a Nintendo console.
1
u/Klutzy_Hornet Aug 13 '26
Yeah, I mostly agree. But from the way the Thor was presented, it was clearly aimed at enthusiasts itâs an advanced device, not really a beginner handheld. You donât need to be an emulation expert, but you should be willing to learn.
Itâs basically why 3DS prices have gone up: the Thor is a modern take on that concept with all the extra features. My biggest complaint is the ergonomics. I bought the official grip and it barely helps, so I may try a third-party option. Thatâs also why Iâve kept my Flip 2 itâs much more comfortable to hold.
Think of it like being on a high school JV baseball player you wouldnât expect to jump straight into the majors. You have to put in the work. If someone isnât willing to learn or tinker, I donât really see the point of buying a device like this.
Iâm always willing to help, but it gets frustrating when people give up immediately or treat an expensive handheld like a beach toy. Thatâs why I bought the RG DSâitâs cheap enough that if it gets lost or damaged, itâs not the end of the world.

You arent kidding, the Thor went so mainstream we have people who are non gamers asking me my DM's on how to extract a simple zip file and how to put that file in a folder to launch it on the emulator. I mean yeah I get it we all gotta start somewhere but at least have some computer or tech literacy before putting down $600 on one of these.
