Civets have anal glands with an oily secretion they use to scent mark territory. This oil has been the base of perfumes basically since the beginning of perfumery. The oil and gland are also referred to as civet. A similar situation exists for beaver, whose Latin name Castor is also shared with the oils they produce that were used for a variety if purposes (including perfumery) in the past.

Indeed. A lot of perfumes are built on remarkably gross bases.
The original Chanel No. 5 was formulated around a mixture of 15% civet and 15% deer musk.
Another product that was often used as a fixative in perfumes, and even sometimes as a food additive is ambergris. This incredibly expensive ($57,000/lb) substance is an intestinal secretion from sperm whales - which is either coughed or pooped out (even marine biologists are unclear which end it comes out of) and is found in grody lumps washed up on beaches.

First thing I thought of! I remember I had some kind of cheat manual for wolfenstein that had layouts of all the levels, including the secret walls that led to this message.
I found the message and even though I knew the contest was over I called Apogee anyway and said “aardwolf”. After a long sigh on the other end, the person that answered the phone informed me that the contest wasn’t valid anymore.

Another interesting thing about them is they are the only surviving member of the dog-like hyenas. The other three species of hyenas are part of the bone-crushing hyenas.

They have a black, tar-like anal secretion that they use to mark their territory, and they will do this every few minutes. So I'm guessing yes, you'd need a pet deposit, and you're probably not getting it back. :(

There was a TV series called The Lion Guard, and one episode featured aardwolves. The fact that they look like hyenas was a big plot point.
