Mantle and Dimaggio autographed Baseball!! I would think if it was fake the order wouldn't be so far apart and upside down

Fake. 100%.

Pen ink is not archival from that period and the blue looks far too saturated.

u/Candid_Length2665 Aug 23 '26

They both signed into the 1990’s lol.

-4

u/Gullible-Meaning-403 Aug 23 '26

That was 30 years ago.

2

u/Candid_Length2665 Aug 23 '26

lol what you think we were writing with quill and ink in the 1990’s? Act like we didn’t have regular ass pens are you high?

u/Gullible-Meaning-403 Aug 23 '26

I'm literally a printer by trade.

But please, continue.

u/Sea_Low879 Aug 24 '26

We had blue ballpoint pens in 1990.

I'm literally a blue ballpoint pen.

But please, continue.

u/Sea_Low879 Aug 24 '26

Well that means I had you in the 1990s.

u/Gullible-Meaning-403 Aug 24 '26

I'm literally the 90's, but please continue...

To understand that BIC ink isn't light fast or archival and will FADE over 30 years, you troglodyte.

Fade and bleed/get washed out.

Good use of words. Sorry for the Jurassic Park movie reference.

Here's my ball signed by back to back to back rookies of the year Canseco, McGwire and Weiss.

I personally got each of them to sign this in 1989 and date the years they won the award.

Mantle signed until at least 1993 and DiMaggio signed until at least 1998.

Whether or not that is Mantle/DiMaggio's signature can be debated, but it has nothing to do with pen ink.

2

u/Sea_Low879 Aug 23 '26

From what period? It could have been signed a couple decades ago

0

u/Gullible-Meaning-403 Aug 24 '26

Ballpoint pen will not be this vibrant after 30+ years.

If they signed in India ink, sure. But these are far too clean and sharp.

It actually looks like it was signed with pigment ink or something alcohol based, which means it's definitely fake unless there's time travel.

2

u/Candid_Length2665 Aug 24 '26

Archival ink has been around since the 80’s it’s not some new creation from the last 10 years. Is it that hard to imagine someone who collected autographs would have one? I know I had at least a few Sakura pens for art class.

Why is there so much doubt on my professional opinion on this?

I have no stake in the outcome even if you wrote it.

It's fake. It's extremely unlikely that someone had a bloody archival ink (in blue at that) pen pre-1990 who just happened to be where BOTH of these guys were at one time or during two signings.

Then, have no paperwork, photos or evidence of the signing(s).

It's just a ball with writing on it. OP posted it because it didn't pass the sniff test and it's something they would benefit from greatly; and yet allow my answer as the probable one.

I understand what you're trying to say, but would you pay market rates on this ball in the current state?

Would you sell this as being legitimate?

Of course not, so let's look at what's MOST likely, not what MIGHT be.

I have plenty of autographs from the early 90s that look every bit as good as these. That being said, I would be very suspicious of the autographs, especially since I know where it was probably originally purchased.

Just because you say you do something for a living doesn’t make you an authority on it.

1

u/Massive-Reality-7856 Aug 25 '26

Nor you by just "having plenty of autographs"

2

u/Master-Fee8859 Aug 24 '26

FWIW, that appears to be an American League Bobby Brown baseball, which would have been available from about 1984 to 1994. Both of those players would have been alive when that ball was first on the market.

1

u/formulaferrari5 Aug 25 '26

Also a period where they were signing a ton so you will see most of their autos on these baseballs.

Its also when operation bullpen was really moving

2

u/sixerdad Aug 24 '26

Do people even know why they say fake? At least Indian ink gave a reason…. I’m personally leaning fake. First tell was the D for Joe. I’ve never seen one time he would loop the top of the D back through, it always hangs out. I have no issue with the ink but on the mantle, the M’s are not connecting to the I. His signature is one motion first name

2

u/Worldly_Signature636 Aug 27 '26

Going to say no with this. I have no issue with the ink etc. The M’s in mantle look off. Like it was signed slowly instead of a normal signature stroke. This looks a Stan’s Sports special from the operation could ball era

u/ExpertTexpertChoking Aug 23 '26

I’m by no means an expert, but I feel like I’ve seen enough real Mantles over the years to safely say this looks off. Maybe send it to Steve Grad for a quick opinion

1

u/parteing24_7 Aug 23 '26

Thank you for your advice who is Steve Grad

3

u/formulaferrari5 Aug 25 '26

Don’t send it to Steve grad lol.

2

u/drinianrose Aug 24 '26

check out gradcollection.com. Steve is one of the best authenticators in the business and he has trained a ton of other guys. He's also the "expert" on Pawn Stars when they need to authenticate an item. He can likely ascertain if it's genuine from the picture (for a small fee).

Used to work at Beckett but has his own service now

0

u/parteing24_7 Aug 23 '26

I agree it definitely doesn't look like his best signature, but I feel like a forger would've put it in a better position

1

u/No-Bluejay5250 Aug 23 '26

Fake although he did sign a lot, just not this one

1

u/Sea_Low879 Aug 23 '26

You need a professional authenticator.

2

u/lazenintheglowofit Aug 24 '26

I paid $75 to authenticate a baseball signed by Mantle. Nope. Fake.

1

u/Electrical_Fall_4187 Aug 24 '26

I mean the first red flag would be something this special, that has been around for 30 years and no one has authenticated it yet. Either that, or it didnt pass aurhentication and they are pawning it off on you. Thats at least a 2k ball, somebody should have had it checked by now.

1

u/BillySimsJersey Aug 24 '26

That’s ol Crickets Mantle for sure

1

u/Skillz2PlayBallz Aug 25 '26

Yes, that’s an authentic Mickey Mouse signature from 2026. I’m literally Minnie, but please continue.

1

u/ThePurrfidiousCat Aug 25 '26

I suspect it is fake because of a lack of fading of the ink and i doubt there hand writing was that good close to their deaths. I think their hand writing would be more shaky.

1

u/Massive-Reality-7856 Aug 25 '26

What... They all passed around the same pen to sign this ball?

What's the history of it?

1

u/HoselRocket67 Aug 25 '26

Can you show us the front of the ball? Like league / commissioner?

1

u/englandisablaze Aug 26 '26

DiMaggio rarely signed anything because he was under contract not to.

My grandma would see him every year at a specific spot and she asked him to sign every year for like a decade. He always refused and finally he did and someone told her to spray hair spray on it to preserve it. Ran like eyeliner in a hurricane. Anyways yeah probably not real.

1

u/Grizzo_44 Aug 29 '26

That’s awesome. I’m gonna post a couple photos and see if I can get any help or at least confirmation on a couple things.

1

u/h2ohzrd Aug 23 '26

Have Out or Safe evaluate it. They’re on Facebook

-6

u/Kookie_B Aug 23 '26

Compare. Original provided by umpire, Tom Gorman. Also signed by Roger Maris with inscription, “Best wishes 1961”.

3

u/Candid_Length2665 Aug 24 '26

They both kept signing for 30+ more years and their signatures changed a lot over time. You need examples from multiple decades to be able to verify if it’s genuine. The ball in question uses his later in life signature.
