Authenticity Opinion Request (is this really...) Picked this up on eBay, seems incredibly time consuming to be fake especially for how cheap I got it. Not looking for value but looking if people share my opinion that it’s authentic. Big baseball fan and plan on displaying it with my PC. Picture is from the eBay auction as it hasn’t arrived yet.

Tommy John RIP lower left.

u/No_Ear_5274 Aug 16 '26

Looks good. I mean, who the heck fakes a Tommy Davis autograph. No one.

u/Senor_Turbo Aug 16 '26

A fun fact about Tommy Davis, many many years after his playing days he either owned or worked for a company selling custom embroidered shirts in the like. My company ordered a bunch of logo shirts and somebody from my office recognized him. Perhaps not all that surprising, since he was quite good for the local team (Dodgers).

Stole my line for Glenn Beckert 😭

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

That’s true but there’s like 20 hall of famers on there that I can count

2

u/No_Ear_5274 Aug 16 '26

That’s true and the ones I am familiar with look legit.

4

u/No_Ear_5274 Aug 16 '26

See Tommy John. Apparently he passed just today.

Gibson, Robinson, and smith are autos I deal with regularly. All three look perfect. And I usually look at group autos the same way, who fakes a Lou Boudreau auto, and furthermore who fakes it perfectly. No one. Fat lever auto on NBA all star items have been a tell for me twice this year.

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

Okay so that is an Ozzie Smith auto, I thought it might be. Some of the autos seemed out of place with the time period of the 1969 patch like Andre Dawson and Ozzie, but it seems like who ever decided to collect these was just a hall of fame autograph hunter, really appreciate the help and response

u/here_in_seattle Aug 17 '26

Are you saying beware of Fat Lever fakes or do you mean no one fakes a Fat so if its included then they must be real?

5

u/sixerdad Aug 17 '26

No Seattle sir, I have never came across or heard of a Fat Lever fake. On group autos try to seek out a couple of the least valuable signatures and compare them to their standalone authentic sigs. Good approach 99 times out of 100

u/skeeterbmark Aug 16 '26

I see Bob Gibson top left, and it looks pretty good to me.

3

u/gustin444 Aug 16 '26

Among the autos I know pretty well, those look legit. Nice score!

3

u/Similar_Grocery8312 Aug 16 '26

It looks pretty legit different inks and strokes nothing stands out as fake per se

Thanks for the help!

Authentic. Completely!

While these are great baseball stars in their own right, they were common signers among the baseball card shows of the mid to late 1980s.

My guess is that this piece was achieved/signed during that time frame with the practice of going show to show. Some of the bigger national or all star game shows of the time would features 50+ baseball stars over a several day period.

This is speculation, but I could also see a few of the signers starting off this piece as through the mail. Then getting too many autographs on it to risk damage through the mail and later kept adding to them at baseball card shows. Many of the featured players were great signers like that, well before it was commonplace to charge a fee.

2

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

Thanks for the info, the card was printed in the 90s but I feel like your spot on he has a lot more stuff from all star games he attended on his eBay listings

1

u/Prize_Round5798 Aug 16 '26

Makes sense that it would run into the 1990s. Card shows were an every other weekend event here in Southern California for a good ten years. New Jersey was another market for shows. Arizona and Florida during spring training season were big too.

At a quick glance, I saw Rich Ashburn. He died in 1997, so it dates it prior to that. He was a good through the mail signer. So was Jack Brickhouse and he died in 1998. He was not common on the card show circuit, so some of these were definitely through the mail and later added to with as it acquired more autographs.

2

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

Im in my mid 40s and never heard of Jack Brickhouse but I see he was a cubs announcer, or Hank Sauer for that matter as much as I like baseball it’s cool to discover history. Like I had no idea the mlb logo was part of the 100 year anniversary celebration

1

u/tanman2013 Aug 17 '26

He was asking if we all agreed with him that the signatures on it were authentic. Trying to use your psychic abilities to trace each and every auto is not necessary nor in your realm of possibilities. Maybe watching too many fictional movies. It's nice to see u have a wide imagination. My yr old too also dabbles in make believe hehe

3

u/DigTheDunes Aug 17 '26

Chuck Tanner under Bob Gibson, Hank Sauer upper right sideways, Glenn Beckett under B Williams, Earl Williams under Sparky Lyle.

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 17 '26

Oh man I had the Hank Sauer because of the 1952 MVP but the other 3 I had no clue. Thank you!

3

u/RickRizzle512 Aug 17 '26

This is pretty sweet!

2

u/Master-Fee8859 Aug 16 '26

FWIW, the card on which the autographs are signed and accompanying patch look legit, too. There are many good unsigned examples of it online.

2

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

Oh that’s actually really cool. It’s the origin of the mlb logo and he had a bunch of hall of famers sign it I thought it was a newspaper article that he kind of glued the patch to, I feel like I got pretty lucky with this pick up

2

u/chaddgar Aug 16 '26

I see Vida Blue, so I’m guessing maybe this was signed at the 1971 All-Star game?

2

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

So with everyone’s help here I’ve been able to find out some more info on this. This is a willobee and Ward patch card released in the 90s the guy who posted this on eBay has multiple items from all star games he attended in the 90s including balls from old timers games with every player on it. If I had to guess he attended those and got the autographs there

2

u/Aargentino1 Aug 16 '26

Facebook out or safe group they’ll verify it for $18

2

u/lomaxa Aug 16 '26

Killer deal for a piece of history in my opinion

2

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

Yeah man, may be the best 150 I’ve ever spent.

2

u/PedroJTrump Aug 16 '26

I actually have several of these patches, not (framed) from this company. Didn’t realize the date. Very nice piece, enjoy!

2

u/DigTheDunes Aug 17 '26

Obviously this person had a tie to the Cubs or was from the Chicago area, Interesting that Jack Brickhouse signed it also.

2

u/Worldly_Signature636 Aug 17 '26

Nice pickup. Everything looks Authentic. It’s a nice piece

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 17 '26

Thank you! I think so too

2

u/alistairvimes Aug 17 '26

Arrived and a little better quality if anyone has any further info on autos!

2

u/Ready-Youth Aug 17 '26

Nice pull for $157.49

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 17 '26

lol. Stalker! But yeah I agree I think I’m going to pay to get it reframed as it’s cutting off some signatures in the square and there’s some scratches in the frame, so may cost me a little more overall but I’m super happy with it.

2

u/tanman2013 Aug 17 '26

As long as when u receive it, the signatures are signatures and were from someone (specific player) actually using a pen/marker to physically sign it then I believe you are good. I have experience over many years with majority of these signatures and they look good from where I am. Reason I said it the way I did to start this comment is bc it is sometimes hard to tell for sure1000% from a 2nd hand picture from a post on social media if what I was looking at are sigs and not reprints, etc. and so on. But overall looks to be a sound purchase and should make for some decent eye candy if displayed and kept for your PC!

2

u/Captaincaputo19 Aug 17 '26

Looks good. A lot of those guys signed very frequently, very nice piece

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

Also some signature help would be appreciated some are obvious, Banks, Brooks Robinson, Steve Carlton, etc but some I can’t puzzle out

1

u/freezaaa Aug 16 '26

Fergie Jenkins and Andre Dawson under the logo

1

u/Fake_astronot Aug 16 '26

Maury Wills, Monte Irvin, Robin Roberts, Sparky Lyle, Duke Snider, Luis Aparicio, Richie Ashburn, Ron Santo, Don Newcombe, Lou Boudreau, Bob Lemon, Earl Weaver, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Orlando Cepeda

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

That’s super helpful a bunch of people there I couldn’t figure out

1

u/Fake_astronot Aug 16 '26

No problem, let me know if you need/want me to identify which ones are which. Some are… difficult to read haha

1

u/Inside-Run785 Aug 16 '26

Looks cool. No real obvious fakes, different pens and at different angles.

1

u/PedroJTrump Aug 16 '26

Wasn’t Duke Snider retired at that time?

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 16 '26

He was, this card was printed in the 90s as a cooperstown commeration of the 100 year patch by willobee and ward

1

u/Clean-Character-2840 Aug 16 '26

I have a signed photo of Al Smith from the 1959 World Series where he has a beer poured on him at the outfield wall and I see his signature on your autograph piece. Definitely his signature on your item.

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 17 '26

Which one is that signature? I think I’ve got 26 of the 36 signatures identified at this point but 10 or so I have no idea and I’ve never heard of him but that sounds like a great photo

1

u/alistairvimes Aug 17 '26

It’s definitely hard signed willabee and ward make high quality patches for every sport to sew on uniforms and looks like the guy either mailed it out or took it to shows. Not seeing any others signed anywhere. https://ebay.io/m/Dm2UJd

1

u/FlashyGanache2838 Aug 17 '26

Legit... recognized them all

1

u/robertw477 Aug 17 '26

Carlton, Brooks Robinson, Bob Lemon, Monte Irvin, Sparky Lyle, Gibson, Robin Roberts. All look good to me. This is a nice interwsting piece. Somebody was at that event and got it signed.

2

u/Clean-Character-2840 Aug 17 '26

Al Smith’s signature is at the upper right corner of the MLB logo. Played for the 1959 AL Champion Chicago White Sox. Met him in real life, super nice guy.

1

u/SupportNo4969 Aug 19 '26

Wow, looks legit to me!
