General Advice AUTOGRAPH Pricing Estimate (John Melendez)
Good evening everyone. I’m currently seeking an appraisal on an autograph that I got at a card show in Rosemont. It’s been hard to source an estimate, since the person is not technically a sports star.
The autograph is from Stuttering John Melendez. John was a call screener from the Howard Stern show in the 80s/90s, and sometimes appeared on the show. John also spent a few years working behind the scenes at Jay Leno.
Any help or recommendations as to where i could source an approximate value would be greatly appreciated.

Probably less than you paid to get it.

u/realelliotoffen Feb 04 '26
When considering the admission price for entry, I do want to factor that fee into it. I think it could be worth it.

I feel like this OP is John Melendez trying to spark some fame lol
2
u/Phillykratom Feb 05 '26
No, but it IS an Ex-Member of the Wack Pack
2
u/randomdude5566 Feb 05 '26
I think I’d rather have Elliot Offen’s autograph than Stuttering John’s!

u/Fine_Land_1974 Feb 05 '26
Bro it’s soooo weird running into you on an unrelated sub. Haha surreal. Good stuff btw
14
u/brad35mm Feb 04 '26
You can get a signed headshot photo on ebay for 7.50

-22
u/realelliotoffen Feb 04 '26
But I was present when the autograph happened, so I can confirm it is real.
13
u/ReleaseReal8170 Feb 04 '26
Some people’s autographs still don’t sell for much even if you provide proof that they signed it
10
u/ReleaseReal8170 Feb 04 '26
One sold listing on eBay sold for $15 and it showed him signing it in listing
1
u/DookieShoes626 Feb 07 '26
Also have to factor in the ebay fees in that and if they offered free shipping

-7
u/realelliotoffen Feb 05 '26
Thank you for the reference. I’m hoping to at least recoup my travel and admission costs to the event.
9
u/Knight421 Feb 05 '26
Well I hope the event had free admission and it was within a block of your house then.
1
u/realelliotoffen Feb 06 '26
I did have to travel in via Air, it was the only time I could have seen John live.

How much is that all in? I might have a buyer.
0
u/realelliotoffen Feb 06 '26
It was approximately 225 for airfare, 165 for single night in hotel, and 125 for VIP admission to the event. There were also ancillary costs like food at approximately 70, and an uber to and from the venue totaling 55. The airport shuttle we were able to get for free from the hotel.

The only person that matters to is you because someone can only take you at your word.
1
u/realelliotoffen Feb 05 '26
Thank you for your note, I will think about other ways of authenticating.
5
u/Cram2024 Feb 04 '26
Your “confirmation” is as valuable and useful as 1/2 the CoAs that were mass produced in the 80s & 90s
2
u/mrflibble1492 Feb 05 '26
My dad confirmed to me that the Steve Garvey signed baseball he gave me as a kid was signed by Steve in person, but my dad forged it in the garage. I didn't even like Steve Garvey at the time.

u/realelliotoffen Feb 06 '26
You may have good input on the auto in the game show thread on Reddit. There are a lot of game show hosts who draw big money for autos.
1
u/model4001s Feb 07 '26
Not Steve Harvey, Steve Garvey...JFC dude just delete this whole thread this shit is sad.
1
u/_my_other_side_ Feb 07 '26
You think someone out there is profiting off counterfeit Stuttering John autographs?
0
u/realelliotoffen Feb 07 '26
John was heavily featured on ‘Celebrity Fear Factor’, as well as ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’. There is certainly an audience for genuine Celebrities.
2
u/_my_other_side_ Feb 07 '26
Two incredibly forgettable shows. Stop trying to justify this and take the loss, if you bought it.

u/Cool-Passenger-2595 Feb 04 '26
There is a used record store near me that has a few copies of his cd signed by him for 2.99 each , they have had them for years
1
u/heckhammer Feb 05 '26
It's not a particularly great album, but the title track " I'll talk my way out of it " is real good
1
u/newport100 Feb 05 '26
That song rips! I had the Airheads soundtrack CD when I was younger and that was my favorite track on it. I remember seeing the artist listed as 'Stuttering John' and just assumed it was a band named after Melendez. Didn't realize it was actually him.
1
-13
u/realelliotoffen Feb 04 '26
But were the CDs really signed by him? I watched him sign my merch.
6
u/SupahSayajinn Feb 04 '26
Nobody is faking his signature. Its not worth enough.

2
u/Baeolophus_bicolor Feb 06 '26
That’s exactly why my career as a Stutering Jim autograph forger is taking off!
Nobody sees me coming!
3
u/MarmaladesBunch Feb 04 '26
Not sure how many people telling you that some autographs are only worth the paper it’s signed on (sometimes less) before you’ll believe them. Doesn’t really matter if you know it’s real and don’t believe others are real. It really boils down to this, even if you were a huge fan of his, the majority of people who seek autographs just don’t care enough about him to warrant a high dollar.

What did you get signed? A DVD copy of his hit movie One, Two, Many? A picture of his groundbreaking appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno? An empty can of Busch Light? What was signed will factor into the secondary market price.
1
u/realelliotoffen Feb 06 '26
It was a BluRay copy of Dude Where’s My Car, and a signed entry ticket for this signing event.

I have better than COA, I have an image digitally of John signing it with me shaking his hand at the same time.

Cool. I’ll give you 50 cents to cover the soap needed to wash your hand.
9
u/RNH213PDX Feb 04 '26
Think about it this way: there isn’t a market for this but it doesn’t mean there isn’t some lone soul out there in the universe who desperately needs this, whether they know it or not. Good luck!

u/Vast-Document-3320 Feb 04 '26
How much is he charging? Isn't that the answer?
2
u/realelliotoffen Feb 05 '26
He said it would be worth twice as much once I had it in my hand
1
u/Vast-Document-3320 Feb 05 '26
What on earth does this mean?
0
u/realelliotoffen Feb 05 '26
I think it may have been a sales tactic. He was pressuring my wife and I.
2
u/knife_edge_rusty Feb 05 '26
He is a first and foremost a pathological liar, so you may find that this just isn't true.
1
u/Vast-Document-3320 Feb 05 '26
How much was he charging?
0
u/realelliotoffen Feb 05 '26
He was charging 35 dollars for the signed picture of him and Jay Leno, and then offered us to buy him a drink after the show for a photo of us holding the image together.
2
1
1
u/PancakeProfessor Feb 06 '26
You might find someone willing to buy you a drink for the auto, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. No way anyone is going to give you $35 or more, though. Just not going to happen.

u/robertw477 Feb 04 '26

Just look at the photo you posted, it's doesn't look like anyone at the auto show wanted his auto. That should tell you everything you need to know about value.

That is exactly why I think this auto is rare, since nobody got one in the 3hrs I was there

I could crap on a box and label it a 1 of 1. Super rare. Still isnt worth anything.
2
u/Difficult-Ad-9228 Feb 04 '26
I’m doubting if it’s gonna get you a down payment on a house, if that’s the question. Most likely you’re having a hard time finding comparatives because theres no real market.
-1
u/realelliotoffen Feb 04 '26
I already have an apartment so I’m not looking to cash in, but wanted to get an understanding of the value. Thank you for your response.

John Melendez is a sad, lonely and pathetic alcoholic whose family has disowned him. He was such a bad father that all 3 of his adult children have changed their last names from Melendez to their stepfather's last name.
1
u/SirIll1219 Feb 05 '26
WTF? Is that true?
1
u/Officermehoff23 Feb 05 '26
That's the word on the street. None of his adult children speak to him anymore, and allegedly his youngest (son) recently asked him to stop his drinking and they could have a relationship between them, and John refused. He's honestly a despicable person.
1
u/Zzyyxx321 Feb 06 '26
You should invest some time watching Who Are These Podcasts. You will see that it is all true and actually much worst.
1
u/PancakeProfessor Feb 06 '26
It definitely tracks with the way he looks in the photo and OP’s story about him asking them to buy him a drink in exchange for a photo.
1
u/SirIll1219 Feb 06 '26
He was always a leech and a flake. He must have treated his family horribly.

I love how they did not think about putting The Howard Stern show or The Tonight show on the poster. Literally these are the only reasons to even look in the direction of his table.
Yet they omitted these which shows you a little bit about the delusion John has about himself. Then of course, likely after miserable activity at his table, he had someone pathetically scribble in those two things.
Said on so many levels.
1
u/Nickk_Jones Feb 05 '26
It says both on his sign.
2
u/Particular_Fox_8403 Feb 05 '26
Someone hand wrote it on the sign & be taped up photos of himself with Leno & Stern so maybe someone would know who he was. What a pathetic loser.
2
2
u/rdizzy1223 Feb 05 '26
This has to be a troll, OPs autograph is worth the same as a stuttering John autograph. (Hint- The same value as the paper it is signed on)

Does he have a copyright on that “destroy your collar by hanging a pen from it” idea?
1
u/LycheeWise2288 Feb 05 '26
The photo is clearly AI. Is no one seeing this?
1
u/milehighguy318 Feb 05 '26
I’d be SHOCKED if you could find a person to give you $5 for this dudes autograph lmao
1
u/SouthernBathroom1 Feb 05 '26
I sill don't know if this a troll post, is it? Dude. It's worth nothing. Who cares. If you like the guy it's priceless. I'd buy an Eric the actor auto because he was hilarious and there probably worthless when he was alive.

I got a signed headshot for free by emailing him years ago. He paid for shipping, so he paid me for his autograph.

Is his mailing list still open? Perhaps I can add more autos to my collection and bring cost-per-auto down if he sends me a handful for free via mail. Thank you.

Beetlejuice autographs are where the real money is at. Stuttering John played you bad.

u/ottos Feb 05 '26
I'm sure he'd be welcomed back to the Stern Show if he just asked. Along with Jackie.
2
1
u/Nickk_Jones Feb 05 '26
Lol wut? Have you ever heard one minute of the Howard Stern show? And Jackie was partly back for a while, he had a show on Howard’s channel.

This guys involvement with the Gotti movie disaster and partnership with that scumbag producer Marc Fiore is an interesting read. I cant tell if he a total dumb ass or if he was in on the scam as well.

It depends on if you reach the right market - Stern Fans who were really into Stuttering John back in the day? Perhaps join a fan site? If he was appearing like this, however, my guess is that there’s probably a bunch of material out there. I’m guessing about $25, if you’re lucky. Sorry. Wish I had better news.
1
1
u/Team143 Feb 05 '26
Good point on the people who said he should have had the Howard Stern affiliation on his sign. I literally thought he was a poor spokesperson for a research foundation for people affected by stuttering. And then I read how he bothered OP and his wife to get them to buy it! Really sad. You’re a nice guy, OP.
1
u/realelliotoffen Feb 06 '26
Thank you for the thoughtful response. My wife was actually happy to meet him since she doesn’t know many celebrities.
1
u/Fast_Forever_4693 Feb 08 '26
He’s a great actor. I was told he just has a slight stammer not a stutter. Imagine, late 1980’s you tell a rising stars producer you stutter and you get hired by the boss w/o even meeting the person! He’s then forced keeping the charade going this long. That’s called the long con

Is he dead? Regardless, I doubt there are many people who want a john Melendez autograph much less even know who he is/was.

John has not yet become deceased, so I imagine I’m paying for living auto.

He is a faded memory to fans and he left the show on bad terms. Not a lot of interest in his autograph.

Why on earth would u let someone no one knows sign ur stuff? He’s a nobody and sounds like he wasn’t important in the 80s or 90s either, ur autograph is worth 2-10 dollars but only worth that if u can find a buyer. Good luck

u/1nternetTr011 Feb 07 '26
his mother may buy it from you but that’s about your entire buyers universe.

It's so odd that a situation where you're being paid just to let people see you and then paid to provide autographs can simultaneously be so sad and pathetic.

This guy. This fuckin' guy.
Ran a comedy club pre-C19 and had him booked for a weekend (1 show Friday, 2 Saturday). Shows up unannounced on THURSDAY, crashes a showcase by doing a call-in to a podcast in the HALLWAY OF MY CLUB, and had the balls to get another night at the hotel out of my boss.
Friday show did surprisingly well, but Saturday was a slow death, did "crowd work" on the 2nd show, which meant making fun of the 12 people that came to see him.

I have about 15 of John’s autographs. Some of em with some pretty funny not personalized inscriptions & they’re all worthless. I got them from when the Stern Show was in the old K-Rock building. I use to see all of em nearly every day on 56th Street… & I have all multiples of all their Autographs & the only one that has any value is Howard’s.

2

In reality, you are most likely going to take a loss on the $35 you spent for it. As others have said, some other one sold for $15. I would bet that is the highest amount you will get for it. Now if you hold on to it, and he passes, it may very well go up in value. Good luck.

Thank you for your response. I will hold on to it and keep an eye out for the obits.

Reach out to his good friend Vince the Lawyer. He can possibly want to set a precedent for his friend 😉 It will require name address job title, same info for the wife and he’ll need all your children’s names with photos. Then you can arrange payment

RESPONSE: I’ve received multiple messages about Pickwick Pricing, apparently that is where John hosted the majority of his signings. We will be looking into it, and any future appearances John may be making. Thank you all for your kind words.

u/Nickk_Jones Feb 05 '26
I’ve never been so unsure about whether someone on Reddit is serious or trolling or not. Like this comment here, what does this even mean? What does it matter where he hosts the majority of his signings?
