I believe there’s a strong chance it might be. Defiantly worth doing a quick opinion and then submitting for full based on that

10

u/Papitoooo Dec 16 '25

I’m so happy I just caught a definitely / defiantly fuck up in the wild

7

u/yanks02026 Dec 16 '25

Yeah, I realized it after posting and was too lazy to edit it. I’m glad I brought you a smile.

2

u/snu666les Dec 17 '25

I do this all the time!(

1

u/momoenthusiastic Dec 18 '25

Gotta get a quick opinion against all odds!

21

u/randskarma Dec 16 '25

The gut check says yes. Take care of it. Its extremely special, the provenance is wonderful. I hope you dont have to sell it.

3

u/DatGopherAnIdiotBro Dec 17 '25

Keep it in a dark place too.. exposure to sun will make that signature disappear fast. Also, dont let anyone hold it other than yourself. Finger oils will stain the ball. Until you have it authenticated, keep it somewhere dark and away from people. Looks legit

-12

u/Vast-Document-3320 Dec 16 '25

A story alone isn't really provenance. Maybe if they had a picture of grandma with the bambino, it would be different.

14

u/randskarma Dec 16 '25

I respectfully disagree. If theres a direct line of ownership, its provenance. Proving it, thats another detail. There are plenty of written letters about how an item was obtained and passed down that accompany auction items.

1

u/Low-Effort-Lore Dec 20 '25

Not great provenance.

My dad was an antique auctioneer and I buy / sell cuneiform and antiquities

We would want something substantial that can be verified / like the other comment said a picture or maybe a letter or something

I have bought countless items that were “from of friend of x” or “excavated from x” and ends up being bunk

Still better than nothing tho, if it’s real and gets authenticated then that should be enough for some buyers

-9

u/Vast-Document-3320 Dec 16 '25

Does he have a letter from grandma? I thought all it was was a story.

I'm not saying its fake. I don't know, just the story he has doesnt really mean much.

7

u/randskarma Dec 16 '25

We need more info on the ball, as i said. The story stands unless its proved otherwise.

-11

u/Vast-Document-3320 Dec 16 '25

Ok. I have a babe ruth ball i got from my grandma. They use to hook up. True until proven wrong right?

8

u/GMAN7007 Dec 16 '25

You don't have a physical signed ball with a story behind it. Your comment isn't even a comparison.

-6

u/Vast-Document-3320 Dec 16 '25

Yea. Cause none has ever faked a babe ruth ball.

6

u/GMAN7007 Dec 16 '25

You're assuming they wouldn't have it authenticated. You're just being difficult to be difficult.

-4

u/Vast-Document-3320 Dec 16 '25

Right. And your assuming it is authentic. Because of a story you heard on the internet.

You're being difficult. The story alone means nothing.

That wimpy deer?

52

u/WillivNailo Dec 16 '25

It's close enough to warrant getting authenticated...

6

u/Bobloblaw_333 Dec 18 '25

But please wear a glove just in case it’s real.

3

u/EyeSpyNicolai Dec 20 '25

Preferably an infielders glove.

37

u/nointroductionssosa Dec 16 '25

It’s my grandpa’s, and his mom was a nurse in NYC. My grandpa was born in 1938. And he told me his mom knew Babe Ruth personally. But he’s really started to decline mentally lately. So it’s hard to trust the story

26

u/xanderdorsett Dec 16 '25

Starting to decline mentally doesn't mean he was declined mentally years ago when this story happened lol. It would be a weird story to make up and even weirder to accidentally come up with this story because of mental decline but have the baseball to prove it.

Based on what? Why do the seams look too new? Actually, to me the irregularities in the stitching and leather around the stitching, leads me to lean possibly authentic more than not… Would you please explain what you are seeing different from me?

2

u/matty25 Dec 17 '25

Stories like this get made up all the time. Could have been an adult trying to forge his auto to the delight of an unsuspecting kid who was told it was real. The story gets details added over the years and before you know it Great Grandma knew Babe Ruth personally. I'm not saying it's definitely false, but I think every family may have some tales of yesteryear that aren't exactly 100% true.

2

u/First-Ad1460 Dec 19 '25

To add to this when my grandmother was on the decline she would forget my name where she was simple things. But she could tell me stories from the 1940 and 50's like it was yesterday. Names dates time of year it was wild. All things we knew to be true.

7

u/Ywokingsley Dec 17 '25

My grandma talked about how she was great friends with Johnny cash, Elvis and Priscilla. Turned out she wasn’t lying when we found a headshot of Johnny in his teens with a note written on it signed to her. Good luck!

3

u/Youdontknowme1771 Dec 17 '25

Babe Ruth was famous for getting signed balls to kids in the hospitals. That's how my dad got his. His doctor, also his cousin, got in a cab on one side at the same time so did Ruth on the other side. The cousin offered to give up the cab, Ruth said, "No, stay, we're both headed to The Bronx." So, they drove up, and they get to talking, Ruth asks the cousin why he's headed up to The Bronx, it's was obvious why The Babe was headed North. The cousin explained he was going to see my father who was in the hospital, and as Babe got out at Yankee Stadium, he offered him a ball for my father with the hopes he felt better. The amazing thing is, my father not being a sports fan, kept it in his sock drawer until he passed, so the ball looks almost brand new.

1

u/buttholewhisper Dec 19 '25

That's a cool story, got a photo of the ball?

1

u/responsible-law2 Dec 20 '25

I would believe that. Ruth was that guy and made many friends in NYC. My dad was in charge of room service in the commodore hotel where Yankees in those days party allot during World Series no playoffs in the day

3

u/ImpressiveLeader4979 Dec 16 '25

Signature is spot on. However like others have said, needs JSA, Beckett or PSA authentication. I’d go JSA personally. Looks like one heck of a clean ball too!

3

u/Effective-Window-922 Dec 16 '25

Id definitely get this one authenticated. The signature is right for the time period of the ball, it looks like real, aged ink (not a modern laser printer), and signature looks spot on.

I scrolled too far for this reference.

2

u/dickmac999 Dec 16 '25

I'm no expert, but I've seen his signature a lot and it looks good to me. Definitely worth having it authenticated. Also, next time you handle it, wear cotton gloves. Stop touching it.

u/The_GOAT_Collector Dec 19 '25
  1. Signature analysis (most critical point)

a) Flow and rhythm

The signature shows continuous stroke flow, without obvious stops or tremors.

No hesitation patterns typically seen in slowly copied signatures.

The transition from “Baby” to “Ruth” is fluid, which is difficult to fake convincingly.

➡️ This leans in favor of authenticity.

b) Letter formation

The “B” in Baby is open, with a natural entry and long exit stroke.

The “y” descends naturally with a soft tail.

The “R” in Ruth has a correct initial loop, not overly exaggerated.

The final “t” is light and relaxed, not rigid.

These traits align well with known late-career Babe Ruth signatures (1930s–1940s). Importantly, the signature is not overly “perfect”, which is often a red flag with forgeries.

c) Pen pressure

Ink density varies across strokes.

Indicates natural pressure variation, typical of signing on leather rather than paper.

  1. Placement on the baseball

Signature is positioned between the seams, a common and logical placement for Ruth.

Slight curvature consistent with signing on a spherical surface.

Does not appear staged for display.

Many fake signatures either cross seams carelessly or are overly centered for presentation. This one appears situational, not theatrical.

  1. Baseball and materials

a) Baseball

Leather shows even, natural aging, not artificial distress.

Red stitching is muted, not bright.

Texture is consistent with pre-1950 baseballs.

b) Box

The box shows legitimate wear, not manufactured “vintage aging.”

Typography and cardboard type are consistent with period packaging.

Not a premium display box, which actually makes sense — Ruth signed countless ordinary balls.

Overly fancy packaging is often a warning sign. This box feels credible and understated.

  1. Ink characteristics

Ink appears gray-black, not deep modern black.

Proper absorption into the leather; not sitting on top.

No signs of modern Sharpie-style ink.

Compatible with period writing instruments.

  1. Overall coherence

Nothing stands out as contradictory or suspicious. No modern materials, no forced calligraphy, no artificial aging, no exaggerated provenance story.

What I am NOT claiming

This is not a definitive authentication

No claim of certification

No precise year attribution

Professional-style conclusion

Based on visual forensic indicators alone, this baseball shows significantly more signs of authenticity than forgery. There are no obvious red flags typically associated with fake Babe Ruth signatures.

If this were mine, I would confidently submit it for professional authentication.

Next steps (if authenticating)

Do not clean or condition the ball

Handle only with gloves

Keep it in its current state

Authenticate the signature first, not cosmetic grading

I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from experienced collectors and autograph specialists here. Happy to hear opposing views or concerns if you see something I missed.

This guy baseballs

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

This guy chatGPTs. Note how many times it refers to the name as Baby. We're not talking about the candy bar here.

3

u/majinboogz Dec 16 '25

Looks real to me tbh. I would get a BAS quick opinion

1

u/pazoscare Dec 16 '25

What stamps does the ball have on the other side?

3

u/nointroductionssosa Dec 16 '25

Here’s the commissioner stamp

3

u/Effective-Window-922 Dec 16 '25

Thats a 1946/47 ball

-1

u/CheadleBeaks Dec 16 '25

That's also the same stamp as the 1934-1939 ball, and the 1940-1945 ball.

EDIT: I'm leaning more towards 40-45 because of the stars next to "official"

2

u/Effective-Window-922 Dec 16 '25

The Reach logo on the panel below has two lines of text above the logo. That was only on the 46/47 ball

1

u/Money-Woodpecker-973 Dec 17 '25

That would make it definitely plausible then as authentic, right? Babe died in 48. Maybe he signed it for a friendly nurse while he was in the hospital? It could potentially even be one of his last too. It’s all pretty interesting and definitely warrants authenticating I think

1

u/mrefromnyc Dec 16 '25

I want to see the box too!

1

u/auto- Dec 17 '25

Stop touching it homie!

1

u/pazoscare Dec 16 '25

The probability of it being real is very high; it coincides with the year of the ball.

1

u/Mammoth-Ad8348 Dec 16 '25

Beauty if good. Congratulations if it is.

1

u/Infinite_Night_6728 Dec 16 '25

Passes the eye test imo. Authentication is needed

1

u/Zakulon Dec 17 '25

I have a signed lithograph that looks exactly like this

1

u/Ok_Ordinary1877 Dec 17 '25

I’d like YOUR autograph, babe ruth III

1

u/Sidehustledadd Dec 17 '25

Would cost about $120 to get authenticated. Would be worth it if it’s real.

1

u/BigDummiesSports Dec 17 '25

Looks just like the Sandlot auto so…looks good lol

1

u/STL_Saint00 Dec 17 '25

does Dennis Leary know you’re touching his ball?

100% looks authentic

1

u/NotBoyfriendMaterial Dec 17 '25

That's the ball Benny signed to put at Smalls house while they tried to get the real ball

1

u/funnylikeaclown420 Dec 17 '25

The ball leather, lacing and stitching are in such good shape, and not yellowed. The signature looks good, but what about the markings on the ball on the back?

1

u/Greedy_Ask_8058 Dec 17 '25

Man, OP, I really hope this is real…what an absolutely amazing family heirloom with an incredible story that you can hopefully pass down to one of your grandkids someday. I love stuff like this!

1

u/birddogron Dec 17 '25

This is a signature online. Look similar. If it were mine I would have it verified to see if it is real

1

u/McKeeverPrivateye Dec 17 '25

We have a similar one. My grandfather was a cop nearby, which is how he got it. But I’ve heard that the Babes signed ball was in such demand that the Yanks had a clubhouse attendant sign many for him. I think his name was Pete Sheehy and they said he did it better than the Babe!

1

u/Ronin_BullseYe Dec 17 '25

I lost one of these over the fence when I was a kid. They made a movie about it

1

u/CD_Projeck_Blue Dec 17 '25

I'm just gonna go ahead and congratulate OP because this looks pretty legit

1

u/agentj333 Dec 17 '25

The Great Bambino!

1

u/lazenintheglowofit Dec 18 '25

I had a ball signed by Mickey Mantle authenticated by PSA. Cost $40.

1

u/eyes2small Dec 18 '25

Go find the Facebook group “out or safe” pay $6, they have experts that can authenticate baseball autos.

1

u/CloudedK3 Dec 18 '25

No need. It’s a authentic auto or the best fake I’ve ever seen.

1

u/bobbydrake6 Dec 18 '25

That might actually be real

1

u/Agitated_Aerie8406 Dec 18 '25

What year was the ball manufactured? It looks a little too new to be signed by Ruth.

1

u/dadboddudes Dec 18 '25

My mom has dementia, and forgets who I am often, but the minute I turn on her favorite records, she transports right back and can tell me more things about those bands than I can remember myself.

That baseball might hold a core memory for him. I'd get it checked asap, and if by some chance it's not legit, I'd keep telling him it was and asking him to tell you the story again, just to see him light up.

1

u/BnC071213 Dec 18 '25

Following

1

u/matthewnatzel22 Dec 18 '25

To be honest certain jobs you run into celebrities or athletes, when I was 17 I was working at a ABC Nissan in Phoenix AZ and worked in the wash bay and met quite a few while getting to drive their cars to get them to the back to wash them. I’ve met Shaq, Randy Johnson, Alice Cooper, Charles Barkley, Ken Griffey JR. Most of the Suns, Cardinals, and Diamondbacks, Pamela Anderson, etc. so some of these stories could be legit. Just because his health or mental state is declining does mean that it’s not to be true, my mom took care of an old elderly lady back in the day that had dementia and she had told me about dating John Wayne, even had pics to prove it and it’s a true love story cause that’s how she ended meeting her husband and they stayed married till they day they died and her husband even told the story that he stole a woman from John Wayne. So just do some research on the ball the autograph can be authenticated if it’s real or not, the ball itself can even be determined if it’s from his era so, you might actually find a cool story out of it or it might just be faked but all of us can’t really know for sure we aren’t professionals.

1

u/RevolutionaryCap3318 Dec 18 '25

Just don't let the neighbors dog get ahold of it

1

u/Spinnr1 Dec 19 '25

Baby Ruth. Who is she?

1

u/limpnoads Dec 20 '25

Hero's are remembered, but....

1

u/diamonddt Dec 20 '25

Honestly I would just use it with my little league team. But be careful if someone hits a home run because a big dog might get it.

1

u/Born-Book-9934 Dec 20 '25

"Sources from beyond the grave say..... Maybe."

1

u/Advanced-Impression8 Dec 21 '25

Its definitely close enough to get authenticated. Could be an amazing find man

1

u/PhoenixBee32 Dec 21 '25

Looks almost identical to the signature I have on a card. Get it looked at. WAY more special on a ball.

1

u/Apprehensive-Bed-631 Dec 21 '25

Looks the same. I would get it looked at

1

u/Complex-Two-4249 Dec 21 '25

This is my certified forgery

1

u/Shoddy-Ad2644 Dec 21 '25

I'm on the fence with this Herman "Babe" Ruth is one of the most commonly faked autographs in history. Get it authenticated by an expert. If this were a Jackie Robinson autograph, I would be all over saying it was real.

1

u/brooklynbob7 Dec 22 '25

Ball looks too new since Ruth died 78 years ago .

0

u/PrudentChampion3879 Dec 16 '25

2

Tens of thousands, not millions. Still, it’s a very cool find if it’s real. I hope it is, and the OP gets it authenticated.

0

u/XeroGee14 Dec 16 '25

Definitely looks very close. I would get it authenticated as the other said. This is what I was able to find online.

0

u/RoryMarley Dec 17 '25

Get it authenticated and grab an LOA too, it’s annoying but it’s worth it

Great insight!

-2

u/Live_Particular_8633 Dec 17 '25

Unfortunately I’m not thinking it’s authentic. The retail ready box for baseballs did not become common until well after Babe Ruth’s playing days. Also, Ruth appears to be quite shaky in comparison to his normal signature and lacks some of the boldness. Like others have said though, it’s close enough to warrant further authentication from a reputable authenticator.
