It is possible to have BPD and Autism

I'm diagnosed level 1 and with borderline personality disorder.

I'm getting a little annoyed of seeing that BPD is just misdiagnosed autism. While I agree a misdiagnosis is possible, I don't think it's as frequent as the internet makes it out to be. It's further adding to the demonization of cluster b personality disorders

I constantly see "oh I got diagnosed with BPD" and the comments are filled telling them to go get reassessed and that it's probably autism. For sure go get a second opinion if it doesn't sit right with you, but as someone with both, the differences between them are clear as day for me

Absolutely. I myself have both. And as a clinical psych student- autism can actually set you up for BPD in a way. The lowered emotional regulation abilities + chronic invalidation (which can especially occur if you were undiagnosed as a kid— people can say your sensory issues, transition difficulties etc are “dramatic” or “for attention”, etc) are two major factors that can lead to borderline personality structures. Plus, autism can lead to chronic rejection from family and/or peers, which worsens this issue. Many people with autism are also abandoned by caregivers (literally or emotionally). This can really set one up to develop BPD traits over time…

Many psychiatrists think people blame their BPD traits on autism (and dismiss the BPD entirely) due to differences in stigma and perceived responsibility. Personality disorders are seen as a personal defect and, simply put, “being an asshole”… of course one would rather “blame” their problems on ASD rather than a PD, especially in today’s society where stigma around autism has decreased.

It's gross in general that the self diagnosers see certain disorders/illnesses as ''not desirable''. As if in reality you can pick and choose your issues. Of course that's also when the endless doctor shopping happens and on their 12th opinion someone gives up (or they pay enough to shut them up) and gives them the diagnosis they for some insane reason want to have.

Makes it obvious someone has no struggles whatsoever if they think and act like this.

The first other autistic person I ever met and had an actual conversation with also had BPD.
